People\u2019s Skepticism About Covid-19 Is The Fault Of The Lying Mass Media<\/h1>\n

Coronavirus disinformation is the hot topic of the day,<\/strong>\u00a0with\u00a0pressure mounting on social media platforms<\/a>\u00a0to censor incorrect information about the virus and mainstream news outlets blaring dire warnings every day about the threat posed by the circulation of false claims about the pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs fast as the coronavirus has raced around the globe, it has been outpaced by a blinding avalanche of social media sorcery and propaganda related to the pathogen, much of it apparently originating in Russia,\u201d<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0the\u00a0Washington Post editorial board\u00a0.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs always when it comes to its relations with the West, Moscow\u2019s main currency is disinformation, and it spends lavishly.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This would be the same\u00a0Washington Post<\/em>\u00a0who falsely assured us<\/a>\u00a0that the Bush administration had provided \u201cirrefutable\u201d proof that the government of Iraq had weapons of mass destruction.<\/strong>\u00a0The same\u00a0Washington Post<\/em>\u00a0who\u00a0falsely assured us<\/a>\u00a0that Russian hackers had penetrated the US electricity grid to cut off heat during the winter, and who\u00a0circulated a McCarthyite blacklist<\/a>\u00a0of alternative media outlets designated \u201cRussian propaganda\u201d compiled by a group of anonymous internet trolls.\u00a0The same\u00a0Washington Post<\/em>\u00a0whose sole owner\u00a0is a literal CIA contractor<\/a>\u00a0yet never discloses this brazen conflict of interest when reporting on the US intelligence community as per standard journalistic protocol.<\/p>\n

If outlets like\u00a0The Washington Post<\/em>\u00a0had done a better job of consolidating their reputation as a reliable news source instead of constantly deceiving their readers about very important matters, people would believe them instead of believing a \u201cblinding avalanche of social media sorcery\u201d (and web wizardry and internet incantations and electronic enchantments and net necromancy).<\/p>\n

We\u2019re seeing these urgent warnings about coronavirus disinformation and misinformation from mainstream outlets who\u2019ve sold the public lies about war after war, election after election, status quo-supporting narrative after status quo-supporting narrative.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cHere\u2019s How to Fight Coronavirus Misinformation<\/a>\u201d reads a headline by\u00a0The Atlantic<\/em>, whose editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg\u00a0once assured us<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cthe coming invasion of Iraq will be remembered as an act of profound morality,\u201d and whose star writer is\u00a0David \u201cAxis of Evil\u201d Frum<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cChina and Russia have seized on the coronavirus outbreak to wage disinformation campaigns that seek to undermine the U.S. and its handling of the crisis, rather than addressing public criticism of their own struggles with the pandemic,\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>warns<\/a>\u00a0The New York Times<\/em>, who\u00a0played a leading role in the disinformation campaign<\/a>\u00a0to build support for the Iraq invasion and who aggressively pushed crazy-making Russia hysteria (including famously\u00a0retracting its bogus \u201c17 intelligence agencies\u201d<\/a>\u00a0claim).<\/p>\n

So it is understandable that people are suspicious and looking to alternate sources for answers.\u00a0The outlets which are warning them about the dangers of this virus and defending massive, unprecedented changes which have an immense impact on the lives of ordinary people have an extensive and well-documented history of lying about very important things.\u00a0People are aware of this, in their own ways and to varying degrees, and it doesn\u2019t help that all the usual suspects are behaving in a way that feels uncomfortably familiar.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis pandemic will be more consequential than 9\/11.\u00a0It probably already is.\u00a0People just don\u2019t realize it, because they still think \u2014 still feel \u2014 that once this is all over we\u2019ll go back to the way things used to be.\u00a0We won\u2019t,\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>says\u00a0The Bulwark<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0founder<\/a>\u00a0Bill Kristol was\u00a0also the founder<\/a>\u00a0of the wildly influential think tank Project for a New American Century (PNAC).\u00a0PNAC famously\u00a0argued a year\u00a0before<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0the 9\/11 attacks<\/a>\u00a0that the massive worldwide increase in US military interventionism they were promoting at the time would not be possible without \u201csome catastrophic and catalysing event \u2014 like a new Pearl Harbor\u201d.\u00a0All of which miraculously came to pass.<\/p>\n

I personally believe there\u2019s enough evidence that this virus is sufficiently dangerous to justify many of the significant precautions nations have been taking<\/strong>\u00a0(though of course we must oppose and be vigilant against government overstepping into authoritarianism).\u00a0The statistics are still very blurry and unreliable, but the mountains of testimonies by rank-and-file medical staff pouring in from areas where the outbreak is bad constitute enough anecdotal evidence for me to believe that this virus can very easily overwhelm our healthcare systems if we don\u2019t collectively take drastic measures to contain it.<\/p>\n

That said, I certainly can\u2019t cast blame on people who believe the threat the virus poses is being greatly exaggerated.\u00a0<\/strong>Not because I think they\u2019re right, but because you don\u2019t blame a population who\u2019s been constantly lied to for their disbelief in what they\u2019re being told by the very political\/media class which has been lying to them.\u00a0It\u2019s not the fault of the rank-and-file public that they\u2019re believing conspiratorial narratives, erroneous Facebook memes, right-wing pundits and the US president over the mainstream press; it is the fault of the mainstream press themselves.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve taken a lot of flack in conspiracy circles lately for my relatively normie stance on Covid-19, but I also can\u2019t really take it personally because it isn\u2019t really their fault.\u00a0Not everyone has the time and the resources to independently comb through many disparate bits of information about a single topic and synthesize a lucid understanding of what\u2019s going on; that\u2019s meant to be the job of the press, but since they\u2019ve neglected to do their job time and time again they lack the credibility to demand that people believe what they\u2019re reporting.<\/p>\n

So I never join in the loud finger-wagging and aggressive demonization of those who express doubt in what\u2019s really going on with this thing.\u00a0I\u2019ll leave that to those of a more mainstream bent, since they seem to enjoy it so much.\u00a0As for myself, I will continue pointing out that the reason misinformation is so readily believed is the same as the reason Trump\u2019s criticisms of the mainstream press are so readily believed: they have absolutely earned their garbage reputation.<\/p>\n
