{"id":1144,"date":"2019-12-10T17:18:48","date_gmt":"2019-12-10T17:18:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=1144"},"modified":"2019-12-10T19:18:55","modified_gmt":"2019-12-10T19:18:55","slug":"new-world-order-golden-girl-suu-kyi-now-defending-genocide-in-myanmar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=1144","title":{"rendered":"NWO Golden Girl Suu Kyi Now Defending Genocide in Myanmar"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Suu Kyi to defend genocide charge at UN court<\/h1>\n<p><!--more-->BBC<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Aung San Suu Kyi is due to appear at the UN&#8217;s International Court of Justice in The Hague to defend Myanmar against accusations of genocide.<\/p>\n<p>The Nobel Peace Prize laureate will hear allegations that Myanmar committed atrocities against Muslim Rohingya.<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of Rohingya were killed and more than 700,000 fled to neighbouring Bangladesh during an army crackdown in the Buddhist-majority country in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Myanmar has always insisted it was tackling an extremist threat.<\/p>\n<p>The case has been brought by the small African nation of The Gambia.<\/p>\n<p>In the initial three-day hearing at the ICJ, it will ask the court to approve temporary measures to protect the Rohingya.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">What are the accusations?<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_1147\" style=\"width: 634px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1147\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1147\" src=\"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/110072089_058529113-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"624\" height=\"351\" srcset=\"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/110072089_058529113-1.jpg 624w, http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/110072089_058529113-1-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1147\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">REUTERS<br \/>Image caption<br \/>The ICJ is the top court of the UN but has no way of forcing countries to abide by its rulings<\/p><\/div>\n<p>At the start of 2017, there were one million Rohingya in Myanmar (formerly Burma), most living in Rakhine state.<\/p>\n<p>But Myanmar, a mainly Buddhist country, considers them illegal immigrants and denies them citizenship.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-45341112\">Blow by blow: How a &#8216;genocide&#8217; was investigated<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-50457375\">Will Omar get justice for his murdered family?<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Rohingya have long complained of persecution, and in 2017 the military &#8211; the Tatmadaw &#8211; launch a massive military operation in Rakhine.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.icj-cij.org\/files\/case-related\/178\/178-20191111-PRE-01-00-EN.pdf\">According to the ICJ documents,<\/a>\u00a0the military stands accused of &#8220;widespread and systematic clearance operations&#8221; against the Rohingya, beginning in October 2016 and expanding in August 2017.<\/p>\n<p>It will hear allegations that the clearances were &#8220;intended to destroy the Rohingya as a group, in whole or in part&#8221;, via mass murder, rape, and setting fire to their buildings &#8220;often with inhabitants locked inside&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>UN fact-finding missions have seemingly verified many of the allegations.<\/p>\n<p>In August,\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/EN\/NewsEvents\/Pages\/DisplayNews.aspx?NewsID=24907&amp;LangID=E\">a report accused Myanmar soldiers<\/a>\u00a0of &#8220;routinely and systematically employing rape, gang rape, and other violent and forced sexual acts against women, girls, boys, men and transgender people&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In May, seven Myanmar soldiers jailed for killing 10 Rohingya men and boys\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-48419595\">were released early<\/a>\u00a0from prison.<\/p>\n<p>Myanmar says its military operations targeted Rohingya militants and the military has previously cleared itself of wrong doing.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">Who is making the accusations?<\/h2>\n<p>The ICJ is the UN&#8217;s top court, and cases\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.icj-cij.org\/en\/frequently-asked-questions\">must be submitted to it by countries<\/a>. This one is being brought by The Gambia &#8211; a small, Muslim-majority country in west Africa.<\/p>\n<p>It has the support of the the 57-member Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and a team of international lawyers.<\/p>\n<p>In October, The Gambia&#8217;s attorney general and justice minister, Abubacarr M Tambadou, told the BBC he acted after visiting a Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh and hearing of killings, rape, and torture.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">What is Aung San Suu Kyi&#8217;s role?<\/h2>\n<p>The case is being brought against Myanmar, not Aung San Suu Kyi.<\/p>\n<p>The ICJ cannot punish individuals in the way that, for example, the\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.icc-cpi.int\/\">International Criminal Court can<\/a>\u00a0(separately, the\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-45568946\">ICC is investigating the Rohingya case<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>But the case is, to some extent, about the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize winner herself.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-pacific-11685977\">The democracy icon who fell from grace<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-41566561\">Is refugee crisis &#8216;textbook ethnic cleansing&#8217;?<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ms Suu Kyi has been de facto leader of Myanmar since April 2016 &#8211; before the alleged genocide began. She does not have control over the army but has been accused by the UN investigator of &#8220;complicity&#8221; in the military clearances.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I implore you to open your eyes&#8230;and please use your moral authority, before it is too late,&#8221;\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/EN\/NewsEvents\/Pages\/DisplayNews.aspx?NewsID=25009&amp;LangID=E\">Yanghee Lee said in September<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Suu Kyi announced in November she would personally\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statecounsellor.gov.mm\/en\/node\/2617\">lead her country&#8217;s defence at the Hague<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; in her role as foreign affairs minister &#8211; alongside &#8220;prominent international lawyers&#8221;. She will address the court on 11 December.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">What is the likely outcome of this case?<\/h2>\n<p>For now, The Gambia is just asking the court to impose &#8220;provisional measures&#8221; to protect the Rohingya in Myanmar and elsewhere from further threats or violence. Even then the ICJ has no way of enforcing the outcome, but a guilty ruling would cause significant reputational and economic damage to Myanmar.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">What is the current situation for the Rohingya?<\/h2>\n<p>Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya have fled Myanmar since the military operations began.<\/p>\n<p>As of 30 September, there were\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/data2.unhcr.org\/en\/documents\/download\/71790\">915,000 Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh camps<\/a>.
