Denying Holocaust Denial<\/h1>\n<\/header>\n

On April 8, it was\u00a0announced<\/a>\u00a0that Canada would soon be joining an illustrious club: the enlightened nations of the world that have elected to ban so-called Holocaust denial.\u00a0 Depending on how one interprets the law, there are currently 18 nations that either explicitly ban \u201cHolocaust denial\u201d (including Germany, Austria, France, Israel, Italy, Poland, Hungary, and Russia) or generically ban \u201cdenial of genocide\u201d (Switzerland and Lichtenstein).\u00a0 Canada would then be the nineteenth nation in this honor roll of obsequiousness.<\/p>\n

Canada\u2019s action comes not long after the UN General Assembly approved a related\u00a0resolution<\/a>,\u00a0A\/76\/L.30<\/a>, on 22 January 2022, \u201ccondemning\u201d such denial.\u00a0 (The resolution was passed \u201cby consensus,\u201d meaning that\u00a0no actual affirmative votes<\/em>\u00a0were cast.\u00a0 Evidently no country had the courage to demand a rollcall vote.)<\/p>\n

The text of Canada\u2019s bill is apparently unavailable\u2014it seems that it will be buried in a larger spending bill\u2014but the UN resolution has some interesting remarks.\u00a0 It first defines the Holocaust as an event \u201cwhich resulted in the murder of nearly 6 million Jews, 1.5 million of whom were children.\u201d\u00a0 This is notable because it codifies in international law the infamous \u20186 million\u2019 figure\u2014a number which is doomed to eventual collapse, given the dearth of evidence.\u00a0 Also, I know of no source for the \u201c1.5 million children,\u201d but a lack of substantiation has never stopped our intrepid authorities in the past, and it surely won\u2019t here.<\/p>\n

The resolution goes on to describe what it means by Holocaust denial:<\/p>\n

Holocaust denial refers to discourse and propaganda that deny the historical reality and the extent of the extermination of the Jews by the Nazis and their accomplices during the Second World War. \u2026\u00a0 Holocaust denial refers specifically to any attempt to claim that the Holocaust did not take place, and may include publicly denying or calling into doubt the use of principal mechanisms of destruction (such as gas chambers, mass shooting, starvation, and torture) or the intentionality of the genocide of the Jewish people.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

As usual, such wording is a combination of ambiguity and meaninglessness.\u00a0 First, no revisionist claims that the Holocaust \u201cdid not take place\u201d\u2014if by this we are to understand that no one, no Jews, actually died.\u00a0 No revisionist calls into doubt that mass shootings of Jews occurred, nor that many Jews suffered from starvation and \u201ctorture.\u201d\u00a0 They do, however, specifically challenge the idea that homicidal gas chambers were used to murder masses of people, and they do question the actual intentionality of Hitler and other leading National Socialists to literally kill the Jews.<\/p>\n

This requires a bit of elaboration.\u00a0 On the first point, Zyklon-B (cyanide) chambers as instruments of mass murder face a large number of major technical problems, including (a) infeasibility of rapid, mass gassing; (b) personal danger to the alleged gassers; (c) inability to remove gas and Zyklon pellets after gassing; (d) inability to remove gas-soaked corpses; and (e) inability to dispose of masses of corpses in any reasonable time.\u00a0 Worse still are the so-called \u201cdiesel exhaust\u201d gas chambers, which are alleged to have killed some 2 million Jews\u2014twice the number of the infamous Zyklon chambers.\u00a0 (If this is news to you, you need to do some research.)\u00a0 These chambers allegedly relied on captured Russian diesel engines to produce fatal carbon monoxide gas.\u00a0 However, (a) diesels actually produce very little CO, far too little to kill masses of people in any reasonable time; (b) diesel engines cannot pump exhaust gas into sealed, \u201cair-tight\u201d rooms; and (c) the corpses at those alleged camps showed no sign of CO poisoning\u2014namely, a pink or bright-red coloration of the skin.\u00a0 If the traditional advocates of the Holocaust were serious about defending their view, they would start by addressing these obvious questions.\u00a0 Instead, they ignore them, and retreat to legal remedies.<\/p>\n

On the question of intentionality, the actual words of Hitler, Goebbels, and others matter.\u00a0 They often spoke of the\u00a0Vernichtung<\/em>\u00a0(\u2018destruction\u2019) or\u00a0Ausrottung<\/em>\u00a0(\u2018rooting-out\u2019) of Jews, but these terms do not require the mass-killing of the people in question.\u00a0 We know this because, first, the Germans used these very terms for years, decades, in public, long before anyone claims that a \u201cHolocaust\u201d had begun; clearly, they meant little more than ending Jewish dominance in society and driving most Jews out of the nation.\u00a0 Secondly, the Germans consistently used other language that explicitly called for deportation, evacuation, and mass removal of Jews\u2014ethnic cleansing perhaps, but not mass murder.\u00a0 Thirdly, we have innumerable examples of other Western leaders, from Bush to Obama to Trump, who have similarly spoken publicly of \u201cdestroying\u201d or \u201cannihilating\u201d their enemies (usually Arabs or Muslims) without implying mass murder.\u00a0 Tough talk has always played well for politicians, and the Germans were no different.<\/p>\n

The UN resolution continues with some specifics on the definition of denial:<\/p>\n

[D]istortion and\/or denial of the Holocaust refers, inter alia, to:<\/p>\n

(a) Intentional efforts to excuse or minimize the impact of the Holocaust or its principal elements, including collaborators and allies of Nazi Germany,<\/p>\n

(b) Gross minimization of the number of the victims of the Holocaust in contradiction to reliable sources,<\/p>\n

(c) Attempts to blame the Jews for causing their own genocide,<\/p>\n

(d) Statements that cast the Holocaust as a positive historical event,<\/p>\n

(e) Attempts to blur the responsibility for the establishment of concentration and death camps devised and operated by Nazi Germany by putting blame on other nations or ethnic groups.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Four of these points\u2014\u201cexcuse or minimize impact,\u201d \u201cblame the Jews,\u201d \u201ccast the Holocaust in positive light,\u201d and \u201cattempts to blur responsibility\u201d\u2014are all but irrelevant to serious revisionism.\u00a0 Serious revisionists, including Germar Rudolf, Carlo Mattogno, and Jurgen Graf, among others, virtually never discuss such things.\u00a0 They focus on far more pragmatic matters: the infeasibility of the mass gassing schemes, the lack of corpses or other physical evidence, the absence of photographic or documentary evidence showing mass murder, and the many logical inconsistencies of witnesses and survivors.\u00a0 But our fine Holocaust traditionalists never raise these troublesome issues, because they know that they have no reply.<\/p>\n

Of the five points, only (b), \u201cgross minimization of the number of victims,\u201d is relevant\u2014in other words, the questioning of the \u201c6 million.\u201d\u00a0 But what counts as \u201cgross minimization\u201d?\u00a0 Does \u20185 million\u2019 count?\u00a0 If so, noted (and deceased) orthodox researcher Raul Hilberg would be quickly tarred with the \u201canti-Semite\u201d label; the fact that he hasn\u2019t suggests otherwise.\u00a0 What about \u20184 million\u2019?\u00a0 If so, then early researcher Gerald Reitlinger is in for trouble; he long advocated around 4.2 million Jewish deaths.\u00a0 Does \u20183 million\u2019 count?\u00a0 Or \u20182 million\u2019?\u00a0 Or will we \u201cknow it when we see it\u201d?\u00a0 For the record, serious revisionists today estimate that around 500,000 Jews died in total at the hands of the Nazis\u2014most of these due to typhus contracted in the various camps, many in assorted shootings at the Eastern front, and virtually none in \u201chomicidal gas chambers.\u201d<\/p>\n

So what, exactly, does the UN want from the world?\u00a0 As we read in the text, the UN<\/p>\n

  1. \n

    Rejects and condemns without any reservation any denial of the Holocaust as a historical event, either in full or in part;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n

  2. \n

    Urges all Member States to reject without any reservation any denial or distortion of the Holocaust as a historical event, either in full or in part, or any activities to this end;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n

  3. \n

    Commends those Member States which have actively engaged in preserving those sites that served as Nazi death camps, concentration camps, forced labour camps, killing sites and prisons during the Holocaust\u2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n

  4. \n

    Urges Member States to develop educational programmes that will inculcate future generations with the lessons of the Holocaust in order to help to prevent future acts of genocide\u2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n

  5. \n

    Urges Member States and social media companies [!] to take active measures to combat antisemitism and Holocaust denial or distortion by means of information and communications technologies, and to facilitate reporting of such content;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n

  6. \n

    Requests the United Nations outreach programme on the Holocaust as well as all relevant United Nations specialized agencies to continue to develop and implement programmes aimed at countering Holocaust denial and distortion\u2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Of course, if we wish to designate the loss of some 500,000 Jews as a \u201cholocaust,\u201d then we are welcome to do so.\u00a0 But we had best get our facts and arguments straight.\u00a0 To resort to legal prohibitions is tantamount to admitting defeat.<\/p>\n

    None of these points were lost on a Jewish\u00a0Boston Globe<\/em>\u00a0columnist, Jeff Jacoby.\u00a0 He was motivated to write a short op-ed entitled \u201cIt\u2019s a mistake to ban Holocaust denial<\/a>\u201d (24 April).\u00a0 He quotes Canada\u2019s public safety minister, Marco Mendicino: \u201cThere is no place for antisemitism and Holocaust denial in Canada.\u201d\u00a0 Despite agreeing with this view, and despite \u201cdespising\u201d Holocaust deniers, Jacoby opposes the pending law.\u00a0 And he explains why\u2014though not before displaying an embarrassing ignorance and an appalling shallowness.<\/p>\n

    He first informs us that Holocaust \u201cdeniers\u201d (never defined) are \u201ccontemptible antisemites and brazen liars,\u201d overflowing with \u201cJew-hatred\u201d and seeking to \u201crehabilitate the reputation of Hitler.\u201d\u00a0 They attempt to refute \u201cthe most comprehensively documented crime in history\u201d by insisting that it \u201cnever occurred.\u201d\u00a0 Such people deserve \u201call the obloquy and contempt\u201d that one can muster, he says.\u00a0 To call such claims unjustified and unwarranted is an understatement of the first order; the reliance here on\u00a0ad hominem<\/em>\u00a0attacks is a sure sign of an impending vapidity of argumentation.<\/p>\n

    Still, Jacoby opposes anti-denial laws on two grounds.\u00a0 First, such laws run afoul of the spirit of the First Amendment (free speech and press).\u00a0 More broadly, he rightly notes that \u201cit\u2019s dangerous to empower the state to punish ideas.\u201d\u00a0 Indeed, \u201cany government that can criminalize Holocaust denial this week can criminalize other opinions next week.\u201d\u00a0 Left unspoken, though, is a key point:\u00a0 How is it that in Canada, a 1% minority of Canadian Jews are able to push through a law that specifically benefits them?\u00a0 One would think that, in Canada, a 1% Jewish minority would have, say, half the clout of the 2% minority of American Jews.\u00a0 But clearly not.\u00a0 Canadian Jews are about to prevail yet again.<\/p>\n

    Jacoby\u2019s second reason for opposing such laws is that, as I noted above, they amount to \u201cintellectual surrender.\u201d\u00a0 He quotes Holocaust scion Deborah Lipstadt to the effect that such laws imply that one is unable to construct a rational argument in defense of the traditional view.\u00a0 And this, in fact, is true.\u00a0 Just look at any traditionalist account of the Holocaust, even by the most learned academician.\u00a0 Look at any commentary on Holocaust denial.\u00a0 None will address the basic issues that I cited above.\u00a0 None will mention a single recent revisionist book, or a single active researcher, such as Rudolf, Mattogno, or Graf.\u00a0 None will examine or refute a single relevant revisionist argument.\u00a0 None will provide a breakdown, by cause, of the infamous \u201c6 million\u201d deaths.\u00a0 These are telling facts.<\/p>\n

    For his part, Jacoby obviously has no answer.\u00a0 All he can do is make flat and baseless assertions: \u201cnever was a genocide more meticulously recorded by its perpetrators \u2026 or more comprehensively described by scholars and survivors\u201d; \u201can immense ocean of evidence attests to the horror of the Holocaust.\u201d\u00a0 Unwisely, he attempts to use General Eisenhower\u2019s \u201cvisual evidence \u2026 of starvation, cruelty, and bestiality\u201d to defend his point.\u00a0 But this fails; as he likely is unaware, Eisenhower\u2019s 550-page postwar memoir,\u00a0Crusade in Europe<\/em>\u00a0(1948), has not a single reference to any Holocaust, gas chambers, or Auschwitz.\u00a0 A single paragraph in the book (p. 439) states only that the Jews \u201chad been beaten, starved, and tortured.\u201d\u00a0 One finds absolutely no mention of mass murder, extermination, gassing, crematoria, or the like.\u00a0 Eisenhower is hardly a good witness for the defense.\u00a0 (For what it\u2019s worth, neither Churchill\u2019s nor De Gaulle\u2019s postwar memoirs had any mention of Auschwitz, gas chambers, or extermination either.\u00a0 Ike was no anomaly.)<\/p>\n

    But does all this really matter?\u00a0 What\u2019s the big deal about the Holocaust? some may say.\u00a0 In fact, it is hugely important.\u00a0 The Holocaust is the lynchpin of Jewish power.\u00a0 It is the\u00a0raison d\u2019etre<\/em>\u00a0of the state of Israel.\u00a0 It is the number one guilt-tool used against Whites everywhere.\u00a0 And it is the embodiment of Jewish narcissism.\u00a0 When that story crumbles, the whole Judeocratic edifice may well fall, too.\u00a0 We should never underestimate the power of Holocaust revisionism; the Jews certainly don\u2019t.<\/p>\n

    A final thought: I\u2019m happy to hear that Jeff Jacoby believes in free speech.\u00a0 It\u2019s too bad that he doesn\u2019t have equally strong feelings about openness and honesty, about the many problems with the Holocaust story, and about a global Jewish Lobby that is able to pass laws, ban books, and impose a cancel culture on anyone that it doesn\u2019t like.\u00a0 Now, that would be an op-ed worth reading.<\/p>\n
