Monkeypox \u2013 it\u2019s the hip new disease sweeping the globe. Allegedly appearing almost simultaneously in over a dozen different countries on four different continents.<\/p>\n
As we wrote in the early days of the Covid \u201cpandemic\u201d, the only thing spreading faster than the disease is fear.<\/p>\n
The media reported the first UK case of monkeypox on\u00a0the 7th of May<\/a>. Less than two weeks later, we\u2019re seeing some\u00a0very<\/em>\u00a0familiar headlines. Just like that\u2026Pandemic 2: Monkey Pox!!<\/em>\u00a0begins playing at all your favorite fear porn outlets.<\/p>\n Sky News tells us that UK Monkeypox\u00a0\u201ccases\u201d have \u201cdoubled(!)\u201d<\/a>\u2026from 10 to 20.<\/p>\n The BBC went real subtle with it,\u00a0blaring<\/a>:\u00a0\u201cMonkeypox: Doctors concerned over impact on sexual health\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n The New Scientist has actually\u00a0used the P-word<\/a>, asking\u00a0\u201cCan Monkeypox become a new pandemic?\u201d<\/em>, before answering, essentially, \u201cprobably no, but also maybe yes!\u201d. Keeping their options open.<\/p>\n Science<\/em>\u00a0warns that<\/a>\u00a0\u201cMonkeypox outbreak questions intensify as cases soar\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n The Mirror has gone full paranoid already,\u00a0headlining<\/a>:<\/p>\n Russia looked into using monkeypox as biological weapon, claims ex soviet scientist<\/p><\/blockquote>\n So that\u2019s one direction the story might go.<\/p>\n To be clear, \u201cmonkeypox\u201d (whatever that even means in this context), is NOT a Russian bio-weapon. It\u2019s not a Western bio-weapon either. Or Chinese bio-weapon. It\u2019s just another scare story. And a rushed, half-hearted one at that.<\/p>\n One of the signs that marked the Covid \u201cpandemic\u201d as a psy-op from an early stage was the sheer speed with which the hysteria spread. Far from learning from their mistakes, the powers-that-be have decided to go even faster this time.<\/p>\n Despite \u201ccases\u201d numbering barely in the dozens, the World Health Organization has called an emergency meeting, a strange thing to do when their annual Assembly starts literally tomorrow. But I guess when your launching a new product you need to do everything you can to get the hype going.<\/p>\n Despite just two \u201ccases\u201d in the entire United States (and indeed the fact they still don\u2019t work), New York is bringing back\u00a0mask recommendations<\/a>.<\/p>\n Nobody has said \u201clockdown\u201d\u2026yet. But Hans Kluge, WHO regional director for Europe, is \u201cconcerned\u201d that transmission could accelerate\u00a0if people attend mass gatherings<\/a>:<\/p>\n as we enter the summer season \u2026 with mass gatherings, festivals and parties, I am concerned that transmission could accelerate\u201d.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n (As inflation soars and the cost of living crisis only gets worse, it\u2019s probably handy for them to have a new \u201cpublic health\u201d reason to ban protests or clampdown on civil unrest. Just a thought.)<\/p>\n There\u2019s some good news though\u2026for vaccine manufacturers, anyway. As\u00a0Whitney Webb reports,<\/a>\u00a0two struggling pharmaceutical companies have already seen a big stock boost from the \u201coutbreak\u201d:<\/p>\n Regardless of how the monkeypox situation plays out, two companies are already cashing in. As concern over monkeypox has risen, so too have the shares of Emergent Biosolutions and SIGA Technologies. Both companies essentially have monopolies in the US market, and other markets as well, on smallpox vaccines and treatments. Their main smallpox-focused products are, conveniently, also used to protect against or treat monkeypox as well. As a result, the shares of Emergent Biosolutions climbed 12% on Thursday, while those of SIGA soared 17.1%.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Just as with Covid, and despite rumours they would be leaving the World Health Organization, Russia appears to be\u00a0lining up with the WHO agenda<\/a>.
