Paying agents are intermediaries which accept payments from bond issuers and distribute the funds among the bond holders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust this week, I received an official letter from the agent Citibank that Evergrande has defaulted on our bond and I will never see my money again,\u201d said Dr Meltzer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs you know, I had bought bonds last year in November to see if the media coverage of the real estate giant was accurate, as they repeatedly reported that Evergrande was doing well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, it appears this media coverage is taking its course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meltzer shared a copy of the letter (published in the feature image of this article) which states Evergrande and its Subsidiaries \u201chave not made payment of interest that was due and payable on April 11, 2022\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asiamarkets.com\/evergrande-bankruptcy-cover-up-claims-as-more-debt-deadlines-loom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Asia Markets\u2019 investigation<\/a> highlighted a litany of examples in which missed Evergrande offshore bond payments were sugar-coated in the financial press through anonymous sources claiming that default had been avoided, thus leading to many investors overlooking the risk the crisis poses to global financial markets.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3231 entered lazyloaded\" title=\"Evergrande\" src=\"https:\/\/www.asiamarkets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Evergrande-coupon-payments-reports-1024x536.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.asiamarkets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Evergrande-coupon-payments-reports-1024x536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.asiamarkets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Evergrande-coupon-payments-reports-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.asiamarkets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Evergrande-coupon-payments-reports-768x402.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.asiamarkets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Evergrande-coupon-payments-reports.jpg 1200w\" alt=\"Evergrande bondholders\" width=\"1024\" height=\"536\" data-lazy-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.asiamarkets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Evergrande-coupon-payments-reports-1024x536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.asiamarkets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Evergrande-coupon-payments-reports-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.asiamarkets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Evergrande-coupon-payments-reports-768x402.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.asiamarkets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Evergrande-coupon-payments-reports.jpg 1200w\" data-lazy-sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.asiamarkets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Evergrande-coupon-payments-reports-1024x536.jpg\" data-ll-status=\"loaded\" \/><figcaption>\u00a0Through 2021, a series of media reports citing anonymous sources which claim that China Evergrande has met deadlines for bond coupon payments.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Anonymous sources claim Evergrande is working with offshore creditors<\/h2>\n<div class=\"yix yix-post-middle yix-float-center yix-align-center yix-column-1 yix-clearfix no-bg-box-model\">\n<div id=\"yix-1933-779449891\" class=\"yix-container yix-type-code \" data-adid=\"1933\" data-type=\"code\">\n<div id=\"yix-1933-779449891-place\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Flying in the face of Dr Meltzer\u2019s letter from Citi has been yet another case of anonymous sources claiming Evergrande is in the process of negotiating ways to repay some $19 billion owned to offshore bondholders.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/us\/exclusive-evergrande-discussing-staggered-payments-debt-to-equity-swaps-19-bln-2022-05-27\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reuters article<\/a> cited two unnamed sources who stated Evergrande is negotiating to repay its offshore debt in instalments over seven to 10 year periods and is also offering debt-for-equity swaps involving its Hong Kong-listed property services and electric vehicle subsidiaries.<\/p>\n<p>But Dr Meltzer is again skeptical.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow is that supposed to be possible, please, when now even the agent Citibank says they are broke?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, I\u2019m afraid that\u2019s anything but better, as shares in Evergrande Property Services and Evergrande New Energy Vehicle, as well as the parent company, have been suspended for about two months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNone of the companies have reported their 2021 financial results yet, as audit work is still ongoing. The property management unit has even been under internal investigation since March as well to find out how banks seized its 13.4 billion yuan in deposits pledged as collateral for third-party guarantees.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Fitch ceases all ratings on Evergrande and Hengda and Tianji Subsidiaries<\/h2>\n<p>Earlier this week, China Evergrande\u2019s deepening debt crisis was underscored when credit ratings giant, Fitch, withdrew ratings on Evergrande and two of its subsidiaries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFitch has withdrawn the ratings as Evergrande and its subsidiaries have chosen to stop participating in the rating process,\u201d Fitch said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitchratings.com\/research\/corporate-finance\/fitch-withdraws-ratings-on-evergrande-subsidiaries-hengda-tianji-02-06-2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFitch will no longer have sufficient information to maintain the ratings.
