Claro tests 5G in Ecuador<\/h1>\n

Claro Ecuador\u00a0<\/a>has begun testing 5G technology in the city of Guayaquil.<\/p>\n

The news comes three weeks after Daniel Hajj, CEO of Claro\u2019s parent company Am\u00e9rica M\u00f3vil, announced a US$450mn investment in the country over the next three years, following a meeting with Ecuador\u2019s President Len\u00edn Moreno.<\/p>\n

The company has opened a week-long exhibition of 5G applications including video calls, virtual reality, internet of things, and a user case of process automation at a shrimp farm, according to local daily El Universal.<\/p>\n

In June, Chinese telcoms giant\u00a0Huawei<\/a>\u00a0said it was\u00a0planning 5G tests with mobile operators in Ecuador<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Uruguay claims to have been the first country in Latin America to launch a 5G network<\/a>, with a limited commercial offering in the city of Maldonado, close to the beach resort of Punta del Este.<\/p>\n

As part of a revamped digital connectivity plan,\u00a0Ecuador\u2019s ICT minister\u00a0Andr\u00e9s Michelena said in July\u00a0<\/a>that the ministry (Mintel<\/a>) would award spectrum in the 700MHz and 2.5GHz bands in November for 4G, and next year in the 3.5GHz band for 5G.<\/p>\n
