Anyone who disagrees with him is \u201cantiscience\u201d and, in his mind at least, guilty of a \u201chate crime\u201d and should be punished with cyberwarfare<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"bodytext\" class=\"bodytextdiv\" data-swiftype-name=\"postbody\" data-swiftype-type=\"text\">\n<p>Dr. Peter Hotez, dean for the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, has repeatedly dismissed the idea of a lab accident or deliberate spread, calling it \u201can outlandish conspiracy theory.\u201d He\u2019s also a fierce critic of the ongoing Congressional probe into gain-of-function research, decrying it as a \u201cthreat to American biomedical science.\u201d<sup><span id=\"edn1\" data-hash=\"#ednref1\">1<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Well, Hotez, the lab leak denialist and Congressional probe critic, has now been outed as a funder and project leader of risky gain-of-function research on coronaviruses at the now-infamous Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV).<\/p>\n<h2>Hotez Developed SARS Vaccine in Case of Lab Release<\/h2>\n<p>Hotez\u2019s dismissal of the lab escape theory is particularly ironic considering he received a $6.1 million grant<sup><span id=\"edn2\" data-hash=\"#ednref2\">2<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0from the National Institutes of Health in 2012 for the development of a SARS vaccine in case of an \u201caccidental release from a laboratory,\u201d \u201cdeliberate spreading of the virus by a terrorist attack,\u201d or a zoonotic spillover event. According to the grant abstract:<sup><span id=\"edn3\" data-hash=\"#ednref3\">3<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWe have identified a highly promising lead candidate vaccine antigen, the receptor binding domain (RBD) of the SARS-CoV spike (S) protein that can induce potent neutralizing antibody response and protection against SARS-CoV infection.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>Our objective is to develop a highly effective and safe recombinant RBD-based SARS vaccine that can be used in humans for prevention of future SARS outbreak and for biodefense preparedness.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The research under that grant took place from 2012 until 2017. After spending five years preparing for the possibility of an accidental or deliberate release of SARS, why would Hotez think a lab leak of SARS-CoV-2 was out of the question?<\/p>\n<h2>Hotez Funded Creation of Chimeric Coronavirus<\/h2>\n<div class=\"MidProductAd\"><\/div>\n<p>Clearly, Hotez is no stranger to the possibility of lab leaks. Could it be that his dismissal of the lab leak theory, and the Congressional inquiry into gain-of-function research, is based in fear that he may be implicated in SARS-CoV-2\u2019s creation? As reported by U.S. Right to Know (USRTK):<sup><span id=\"edn4\" data-hash=\"#ednref4\">4<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWhile casting concerns about Wuhan\u2019s labs as \u2018fringe,\u2019 Hotez has not mentioned his own connection to a project involving a laboratory-generated chimeric SARS-related coronavirus that has come under Congress\u2019 microscope. The project was helmed by Zhengli Shi, a senior scientist and \u2018virus hunter\u2019 at the Wuhan Institute of Virology nicknamed the \u2018Bat Lady.\u2019<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>As part of his NIH grant, Hotez subcontracted funding for research on combined or \u2018chimeric\u2019 coronaviruses, a scientific paper<sup><span id=\"edn5\" data-hash=\"#ednref5\">5<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0shows. Hotez\u2019s grant<sup><span id=\"edn6\" data-hash=\"#ednref6\">6<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0underwrote two of Shi\u2019s collaborators on the project.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>In the 2017 paper<sup><span id=\"edn7\" data-hash=\"#ednref7\">7<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0co-funded by Hotez, Shi and her colleagues generated a recombinant virus from two SARS-related coronaviruses: \u2018rWIV1-SHC014S.\u2019 It\u2019s not clear whether the paper co-funded by Hotez should have been stopped under a temporary \u2018pause\u2019 on gain-of-function work before 2017.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>However, some independent biosecurity experts have said research on this chimeric virus in some ways epitomizes lapses in NIH oversight of risky research in the years before the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>A prior study<sup><span id=\"edn8\" data-hash=\"#ednref8\">8<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0of one of the coronaviruses that comprised the chimera, WIV1, found it to be \u2018poised for human emergence.\u2019 Another prior paper<sup><span id=\"edn9\" data-hash=\"#ednref9\">9<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0on the other coronavirus, SHC014, stated that its future study in lab-generated viruses may be \u2018too risky to pursue.\u2019<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u2018The work here should have been at the very least, heavily scrutinized,\u2019 said David Relman, a Stanford microbiologist and biosecurity expert. \u2018This work should have been heavily reviewed for [gain-of-function], and probably should have been subject to the pause prior to December 2017.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"productad\"><\/div>\n<h2>The Ties That Bind Hotez, EcoHealth Alliance and the WIV<\/h2>\n<p>As explained in USRTK\u2019s report<sup><span id=\"edn10\" data-hash=\"#ednref10\">10<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0and revealed in the 2017 paper<sup><span id=\"edn11\" data-hash=\"#ednref11\">11<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0titled, \u201cCross-Neutralization of SARS Coronavirus-Specific Antibodies Against Bat SARS-Like Coronaviruses,\u201d another funding source of this joint project was the EcoHealth Alliance. The NIH grant<sup><span id=\"edn12\" data-hash=\"#ednref12\">12<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0behind EcoHealth\u2019s part of the study has already come under scrutiny, as it involved the creation of chimeric coronaviruses at the Wuhan lab. As reported by USRTK:<sup><span id=\"edn13\" data-hash=\"#ednref13\">13<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cSpecifically, an EcoHealth Alliance grant report<sup><span id=\"edn14\" data-hash=\"#ednref14\">14<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0obtained by congressional investigators demonstrated that a WIV1-SHC014 chimera generated thousands of times the viral load and enhanced lethality in mice with human airway cells. This prompted concerns among some biosecurity experts, scientists and members of Congress.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>In response to questions from congressional Republicans, NIH acknowledged<sup><span id=\"edn15\" data-hash=\"#ednref15\">15<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0that the research was out of compliance with its own regulations on gain-of-function research.\u2019<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>In this limited experiment, laboratory mice infected with SHC014 WIV1 bat coronavirus became sicker than those infected with WIV1 bat coronavirus,\u2019 the letter read. \u2018As sometimes occurs in science, this was an unexpected result rather than something the scientists set out to do.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So far, Hotez has not been forthcoming about his apparent conflict of interest. On the contrary, he\u2019s denied that his NIH grant supported Shi\u2019s controversial research project at the WIV.<\/p>\n<p>In an August 9, 2022, Twitter post,<sup><span id=\"edn16\" data-hash=\"#ednref16\">16<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0Ebright pointed out that such denials are provably false, as funding from NIH grant AI098775<sup><span id=\"edn17\" data-hash=\"#ednref17\">17<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0(Hotez\u2019s grant) is acknowledged as a funding source in Shi\u2019s paper,<sup><span id=\"edn18\" data-hash=\"#ednref18\">18<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0\u201cCross-Neutralization of SARS Coronavirus-Specific Antibodies Against Bat SARS-Like Coronaviruses.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Hotez Is Part of The Lancet COVID-19 Commission<\/h2>\n<p>Hotez\u2019s conflicts of interest are all the more pertinent when you consider he\u2019s on The Lancet COVID-19 Commission, where he co-chairs the COVID-19 Vaccines and Therapeutics task force.<sup><span id=\"edn19\" data-hash=\"#ednref19\">19<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0Richard Ebright, a professor of chemistry at Rutgers University, told USRTK:<sup><span id=\"edn20\" data-hash=\"#ednref20\">20<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThe construction and threat-characterization of rWIV1-SHC014 was \u2014 unequivocally \u2014 gain-of-function research. It is a conflict of interest that, to my knowledge, has not previously been disclosed to The Lancet Commission \u2026 and that surely will be of interest to The Lancet Commission.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As coincidence would have it, EcoHealth Alliance president Peter Daszak was also on the Lancet Commission back when its COVID Origins task force was initially set up.<sup><span id=\"edn21\" data-hash=\"#ednref21\">21<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0Daszak was eventually \u201crecused\u201d<sup><span id=\"edn22\" data-hash=\"#ednref22\">22<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0from the Origins task force after his conflicts of interest were brought to light, garnering widespread criticism and lack of trust. The task force has now closed down permanently.<sup><span id=\"edn23\" data-hash=\"#ednref23\">23<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Daszak was also selected by the Chinese to be part of the World Health Organization\u2019s initial task force to investigate the origin of SARS-CoV-2. That task force has also been dismantled due to conflicts of interest and less than credible results, and has been replaced with a new working group.<\/p>\n<p>Like Hotez, Daszak also went on record, early on, dismissing the lab-origin theory as \u201cpure baloney,\u201d<sup><span id=\"edn24\" data-hash=\"#ednref24\">24<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0and he was the mastermind behind the publication of a \u201cscientific consensus statement\u201d signed by 27 scientists, condemning the lab leak theory as \u201cconspiracy theory.\u201d<sup><span id=\"edn25\" data-hash=\"#ednref25\">25<\/span>,<span id=\"edn26\" data-hash=\"#ednref26\">26<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Overall, it looks like Hotez and Daszak are reading from the same scripts. They\u2019re also clearly funding the same controversial and highly risky research that likely played a major role in the COVID pandemic.<\/p>\n<h2>Hotez, One of the Most Shockingly Hateful People in Medicine<\/h2>\n<p>Hotez has made headlines a number of times through the years, typically delivering some kind of hateful rhetoric. Hotez has publicly stated he wants to \u201csnuff out\u201d vaccine skeptics,<sup><span id=\"edn27\" data-hash=\"#ednref27\">27<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0for example, and in May 2021\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/takecontrol.substack.com\/p\/the-rise-of-utilitarian-extremism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called for cyberwarfare measures<\/a>\u00a0to be deployed against people who share vaccine safety information, and he did this in the highly reputable science journal Nature, no less.<sup><span id=\"edn28\" data-hash=\"#ednref28\">28<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Over the years, Hotez has repeatedly spewed vitriol at parents of vaccine-injured children and called for physical harm and imprisonment of people who don\u2019t agree with the one-size-fits-all vaccine agenda, so it was rather funny when he whined and complained about getting bombarded with \u201canti-vaxx hate speech\u201d in response to his cyberwarfare call.<sup><span id=\"edn29\" data-hash=\"#ednref29\">29<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Hotez is not above casting an evil eye on other scientists either. As reported by independent journalist Paul Thacker in an August 9, 2022, Substack article titled, \u201cPeter Hotez Sees Aggression Everywhere But in the Mirror\u201d:<sup><span id=\"edn30\" data-hash=\"#ednref30\">30<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cPatrolling scientific discourse, Hotez has a knack for discovering \u2018antiscience\u2019 in anyone who disagrees with him. Jeffrey Sachs, economics professor at Columbia University and chair of an international commission on COVID-19, charged in a wide-ranging interview<sup><span id=\"edn31\" data-hash=\"#ednref31\">31<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0last week that the National Institutes of Health and allied scientists were impeding an investigation into how the COVID-19 pandemic started.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>Since the pandemic\u2019s beginning, virologists have been attacking anyone who asks hard questions about what might have started this outbreak. Predictably &#8230; Hotez went on the assault, tweeting that Sachs, as leader of the Lancet Commission, did not represent the views of science.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>Much like a Pentagon general wrapping himself in freedom and the flag to demand more federal monies for another foreign war &#8230; Hotez has been shrouding himself in the mantle of science to denigrate anyone who questions taxpayer funding for dangerous virus research by the National Institutes of Health.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Lancet\u2019s COVID Origin Task Force Disbanded Over Dishonesty<\/h2>\n<p>Sachs was in fact the one who shut down the Lancet Commission\u2019s COVID Origins task force, a decision he says began with concerns about conflicts of interest between Daszak and the WIV, but in addition to that, Sachs claims he also came to realize that Daszak was \u201cnot always telling the truth.\u201d The final straw came when Sachs sacked Daszak and members of the task force suddenly attacked him for being \u201cantiscience.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"takeaway tamiddle\">My own experience was to witness close up how they\u2019re &#8230; trying to keep our eyes on something else &#8230; away from even asking the questions that we\u2019re talking about. ~ Jeffrey Sachs, The Lancet COVID-19 Commission Chair<\/aside>\n<p>Shortly thereafter, a Freedom of Information Act request brought previously hidden NIH documents to light, and Sachs realized that those who were attacking him also had undisclosed ties that made their ability to get to the truth doubtful at best. At that point, he decided to disband the whole task force.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cMy own experience was to witness close up how they\u2019re &#8230; trying to keep our eyes on something else &#8230; away from even asking the questions that we\u2019re talking about,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Sachs said in his Current Affairs interview.<sup><span id=\"edn32\" data-hash=\"#ednref32\">32<\/span><\/sup><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAlthough Sachs did not name specific task force members who assailed him, it\u2019s not hard to imagine who they were,\u201d Thacker writes. Pulling up the archived webpage for the now-defunct task force, we find no fewer than seven members with direct professional and\/or financial ties to Daszak: Peter Hume, Gerald Keusch, Supaporn Wacharapluesadee, Danielle Anderson, Linda Saif, Stanley Perlman and Sai Kit Lam. (In his article, Thacker details those ties.)<\/p>\n<h2>Hotez in Daszak\u2019s Corner<\/h2>\n<p>Curiously, rather than supporting Sachs \u2014 or at bare minimum feigning concern about Daszak\u2019s dishonesty and this extraordinary level of conflicts of interest \u2014 Hotez has defended Daszak, shooting down any and all critique with a single word: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/takecontrol.substack.com\/p\/should-unvaccinated-be-put-on-no-fly-list\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Antiscience<\/a>.\u201d As noted by Thacker:<sup><span id=\"edn33\" data-hash=\"#ednref33\">33<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cAnyone interested in joining the Hotez crusade against antiscience, should be forewarned: his scripture can be difficult to follow. The registry of the sinful often changes, with names of heretics rotating in and out of sermons, depending on political expediency.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>In late 2020 when members of QAnon seemed to be hiding under every American bed, Hotez preached that members of the online conspiracy were mixing with anti-vaxxers and neo-Nazis to create a \u2018globalizing anti-science confederacy or empire.\u2019<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>A year later, QAnon fell out of the news, prompting Hotez to refocus &#8230; The threat of anti-science aggression now arose from three sources: far right members of Congress and conservative news outlets; an online \u2018disinformation dozen\u2019; and Russian propaganda &#8230;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>Four months later \u2014 surprise!!! \u2014 Hotez discovered antiscience was more complex and multifaceted. Forgetting to cite Russia, Hotez identified a \u2018troubling new expansion of antiscience aggression\u2019 and railed in PLOS Biology against the three new horsemen of the antiscience apocalypse:<\/em><sup><span id=\"edn34\" data-hash=\"#ednref34\">34<\/span><\/sup><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"indent\">\n<div class=\"indent\">\n<p><em><span class=\"bullet\">1.<\/span>Far-right members of the US Congress;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"bullet\">2.<\/span>The conservative news outlets and;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"bullet\">3.<\/span>A group of thought leaders who provide intellectual underpinnings to fuel the first two elements.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p><em>Cobbling together a set of disconnected thoughts, Hotez centered the threat to science on various accusations made against the NIH\u2019s Anthony Fauci, as well as media reports on Peter Daszak. The essay touched on Nazis \u2014 of course!!! \u2014 and ended with a plea for swift and positive action that included \u2018federal hate-crime protections\u2019 for scientists who were being criticized.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Who or What Is Hotez Really Fighting For?<\/h2>\n<p>In his article, Thacker goes on to review several other bizarre incidences involving Hotez. Most recently, he called scientific experts invited to testify before Congress \u201cfringe elements\u201d testifying and promoting \u201coutlandish conspiracies.\u201d So much for Ph.D.\u2019s and med school. He also accused Sen. Rand Paul of promoting conspiracies.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWith a final flourish, Hotez proposed a new threat to science a couple days back: gain of function \u2018conspiracy guys\u2019 allaying themselves with antivaccine activists. But it\u2019s not hard to imagine that Russians and Nazis will make another appearance in a Hotez tweet or essay soon to come,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Thacker concludes.<sup><span id=\"edn35\" data-hash=\"#ednref35\">35<\/span><\/sup><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Here\u2019s the take-home: The reason Hotez protects Daszak and rails against \u201cantiscience\u201d is because it protects Fauci, and Fauci is the one Hotez is really beholden to. He\u2019s received millions of dollars in grants from the NIH \u2014 and so has Daszak and a lot of other people who conduct completely unnecessary and dangerous research.<\/p>\n<p>If Daszak goes down for illegal research, so does Fauci, and with him, the biggest research purse strings in America, if not the world. Ending gain-of-function research would have the same withering effect on funding \u2014 and hence careers \u2014 which is why anyone who questions the sanity of gain-of-function research is \u201cantiscience\u201d and should be cyberattacked on sight. So, all that hateful rhetoric? It all comes down to protecting self-serving interests. Who would have guessed?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"SpecialTagContent narrow-width\"><iframe id=\"iframeheight\" class=\"special-content mlazyloaded\" title=\"The Truth About Covid-19\"
