Thank you and goodbye.\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/4nO0wuRvJw\">https:\/\/t.co\/4nO0wuRvJw<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Adrian Vermeule (@Vermeullarmine)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Vermeullarmine\/status\/1268707339508596737?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 5, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In a vote set to be held on Friday, the Minneapolis City Council will consider smaller measures\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.startribune.com\/minneapolis-city-council-to-vote-on-first-changes-to-police\/571032682\/\">including<\/a> a \u201ctemporary restraining order that will mandate some immediate changes\u201d to the city\u2019s police department.<\/p>\n<p>What a restraining order against the police department would look like or how it would operate aren\u2019t yet clear. But a safe guess, based on what we know so far about Bender\u2019s intentions, is that the police will be restrained from stopping looters from looting.<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s a nice way of saying that the Minneapolis City Council would be codifying Mayor Jacob Frey\u2019s limp response to the riots.<\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/pjmedia.com\/news-and-politics\/rick-moran\/2020\/06\/02\/minneapolis-police-union-chief-decries-his-officers-becoming-scapegoats-n483832\">Forget the Minneapolis City Council, the Police Union Chief Decries His Officers Becoming \u2018Scapegoats\u2019<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>Bender did say, however, \u201cIt\u2019s for immediate accountability measures for the Police Department. It\u2019s not meant to be anywhere near starting this bigger conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added, \u201cTo do this kind of big work, we need a deeper, broader conversation than we\u2019ve ever had before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need white people like me and my neighbors to show up in a different way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sending in social workers instead of police would certainly be different, and who knows \u2014 in a few, limited cases might even be an improvement. But Bender and Ellison have much more in mind, as you\u2019ll see.<\/p>\n<p>For whatever it\u2019s worth, Bender seems confident that she can push through her radical measures. When\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Asihtos_mtg\/status\/1268645648548519937\">asked<\/a> on Twitter, \u201cWill you be able to work with the Mayor\u2019s office on this? Frey increased the police budget,\u201d Bender replied, \u201cDoesn\u2019t matter anymore. I think we have the help we need no matter what happens there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maybe she has the votes, maybe not. We\u2019ll get a measure of her support as the Minneapolis City Council takes on other, smaller measures.<\/p>\n<p>The Minneapolis\u00a0<em>Star-Tribune<\/em>\u00a0(linked above) reports that the various proposals range from \u201cdefunding the department immediately to taking a slower approach and sending social workers or mental health professionals to some calls that are now handled by police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But of course, none of those proposals go nearly far enough for Ellison or Bender, who tweeted this on Wednesday:<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/lisabendermpls\/status\/1268282408102580226?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1268282408102580226&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fpjmedia.com%2Fnews-and-politics%2Fstephen-green%2F2020%2F06%2F05%2Fcrazy-minneapolis-city-council-may-eliminate-police-dept-for-transformative-new-model-n497351<\/p>\n<p>If I\u2019m reading this properly, the Minneapolis City Council\u2019s potential \u201ctransformative new model of public safety\u201d doesn\u2019t include things like preventing or punishing burglars. If Bender and Ellison get their way, looting \u2014 or what I\u2019ve been calling \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/pjmedia.com\/vodkapundit\/2020\/06\/04\/de-blasio-blasted-by-blacklivesmatter-over-horrifying-response-to-riots-n492063\">freelance reparations<\/a>\u201d \u2014 against \u201cwhite persons\u201d would become the new normal for Minneapolis residents.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Mass exodus of business.
