{"id":162259,"date":"2023-03-31T16:33:42","date_gmt":"2023-03-31T20:33:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=162259"},"modified":"2023-03-31T16:46:50","modified_gmt":"2023-03-31T20:46:50","slug":"congressional-republicans-terminate-covid-emergency-resolution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=162259","title":{"rendered":"Congressional Republicans Terminate Covid Emergency Resolution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--more-->Renee Parsons<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">After having been enacted in March, 2020, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2020\/03\/18\/2020-05794\/declaring-a-national-emergency-concerning-the-novel-coronavirus-disease-covid-19-outbreak\"><span class=\"s2\">National Emergency<\/span><\/a> Concerning the Novel Coronavirus Disease Outbreak<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>had been subject to Senate Republican efforts to terminate the Emergency declaration<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>in March 2022.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The resolution, introduced by Sen. Roger Marshall (R-Kansas) failed at that time on a strict party line 48 \u2013 47 vote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">However, with a new Republican majority in the House, another vote was conducted on February 1<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">which approved the Resolution to terminate on a <a href=\"https:\/\/clerk.house.gov\/Votes\/2023104\"><span class=\"s2\">229 \u2013 197 vote<\/span><\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Eleven House Democrats voted with Republicans to terminate the Covid Emergency. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It is not often when the minority Senate Republicans, frequently split by those who routinely vote with the Democrats, are able to pull off a legislative success of any consequence. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>However, Sen. Marshall stepped up to give the Resolution to Terminate another try. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This time, with twenty Senate Democrats voting with Republicans, the Senate voted <a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/biden-sign-legislation-ending-national-163930109.html\"><span class=\"s2\">68 \u2013 23<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/a> to terminate <\/span><span class=\"s2\">HJ<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Resolution 7<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> which declares that \u201c<\/span><span class=\"s4\"><i>the national emergency declared by the finding of the President on March 13, 2020, in Proclamation 9994 (85 Fed. Reg. 15337) is hereby terminated.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The Resolution now goes to President Biden who has indicated he will <a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/biden-sign-legislation-ending-national-163930109.html\"><span class=\"s5\">sign the Resolution<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p3\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Renee Parsons\u00a0served on the ACLU\u2019s Florida State Board of Directors and as president of the ACLU Treasure Coast Chapter.
