“Harry Potter”\u00a0author<\/a>\u00a0J.K. Rowling<\/a> faced another\u00a0backlash Saturday after issuing\u00a0a cheeky\u00a0tweet on sex and gender that\u00a0opened\u00a0up\u00a0a new chapter in her\u00a0ongoing feud with\u00a0LGBT advocates.<\/p>\n “If sex isn\u2019t real, there\u2019s no same-sex attraction,” Rowling tweeted to her 14.5 million followers.\u00a0“If sex isn\u2019t real, the lived reality of women globally is erased. I know and love trans people, but erasing the concept of sex removes the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives. It isn\u2019t hate to speak the truth.”<\/p>\n Rowling tweeted those comments around 6 p.m. ET. Within an hour, she was trending on\u00a0Twitter<\/a>\u00a0and received thousands of responses.<\/p>\n In another tweet, the\u00a0U.K.<\/a>-based\u00a0author\u00a0criticized a prominent idea among the left — that people can menstruate if they’re not women. “\u2018People who menstruate,\u2019” she tweeted, linking to an op-ed with that phrasing. “I\u2019m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?” she asked sarcastically.<\/p>\n The idea that women like me, who\u2019ve been empathetic to trans people for decades, feeling kinship because they\u2019re vulnerable in the same way as women – ie, to male violence – \u2018hate\u2019 trans people because they think sex is real and has lived consequences – is a nonsense.<\/p>\n — J.K.
