Protesters on Wednesday evening beheaded four\u00a0statues on a\u00a0Confederate monument in Portsmouth, Virginia, after the monument was defaced with spray paint hours earlier. A protester told on-scene reporters that an apparent demonstrator was badly injured after one of the toppled statues fell on his head.<\/p>\n

Demonstrators began spray painting the monument after Portsmouth NAACP president James Boyd and the local organization\u2019s vice president, Louie Gibbs, were briefly taken into custody and\u00a0charged<\/a>\u00a0with trespassing, according to the\u00a0Virginian-Pilot<\/em>. Don Scott, a\u00a0defense attorney for Gibbs and Boyd, told the newspaper that\u00a0both local NAACP leaders were released roughly 30 minutes later on a summons.<\/p>\n

Photos shared by\u00a0Virginian-Pilot<\/em>\u00a0reporter Saleen Martin show the monument covered in paint with the phrases \u201cTear it down,\u201d and \u201cBLM.\u201d<\/p>\n
