Photo: Soeren Stache\/dpa-Zentralbild\/ZB (Photo by Soeren Stache\/picture alliance via Getty Images)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Newspaper executive Peter Wright has slammed big tech for secretively developing and changing algorithms for news distribution without giving the industry any indication whatsoever of what they are doing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wright of DMG Media, which is the parent company of The Daily Mail, was testifying before the House of Lords Communications and Digital Committee Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>He accused companies like Google and Facebook of \u2018monopoly behaviour\u2019 as they seek to seize \u2018all the power\u2019 in online news and advertising.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"molvideoplayer\" title=\"MailOnline Embed Player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/embed\/video\/2197592.html\" width=\"640\" height=\"573\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Wright claims that the Mail\u2019s online daily traffic from Google searches has been diminished by 50 per cent in just one year after the company changed the algorithm for news content in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoogle and Facebook in our view are market dominant companies and they behave in the way that market dominant companies do,\u201d Wright stated, noting that it is significantly impacting journalism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoogle and Facebook both distribute our content via algorithm. Those algorithms are what is known in the digital world as a \u2018black box\u2019 \u2013 they are secret, you have no idea how they work. But we can see and measure the results,\u201d Wright said.<\/p>\n<p>Wright also implied that the Mail\u2019s pro Brexit stance led to it being targeted by big tech for diminished online distribution.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that last June \u201cover the space of three days, our search visibility, which is the measure of how often your content is appearing against a basket of search terms, dropped by 50 per cent, and it was particularly marked against some particular terms. One of them for instance was \u2018Brexit\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wright noted that after his group protested, normality eventually returned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut this is monopoly behaviour. You can\u2019t do this if you\u2019re in a business relationship with someone where there\u2019s any semblance of equality of power,\u201d he urged.<\/p>\n<p>Wright noted that Google and Facebook are not regulated and so they are getting away with a secretive takeover of content.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs far as the commercial relationship between news publishers and the platforms is concerned, it\u2019s a business relationship between two partners in which one partner has all the power,\u201d Wright declared.<\/p>\n<p>He described Google as \u201ccompletely dominant\u201d in search and digital marketing, the two main avenues for distributing news content, and Facebook (which also owns instagram) as \u201cdominant in social media\u201d, pointing out that they make \u201cmore money out of advertising than our newspapers do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the vast power that these companies have in such areas, Wright noted that their terms of service are completely \u201copaque\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven the contracts that we sign to use their services are often presented to us on a take-it-or-leave-it basis.
