President Donald Trump on Thursday promised \u201cretribution\u201d against protesters nationwide who tore down statues and referred to Wisconsin demonstrators as \u201cterrorists.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery night, we\u2019re going to get tougher and tougher,\u201d Trump said at a Fox News town hall in Wisconsin on Thursday night, in response to an audience question about his plan to tamp down protests there. \u201cAnd at some point, there\u2019s going to be retribution because there has to be. These people are vandals, but they\u2019re agitators, but they’re really \u2014 they\u2019re terrorists, in a sense.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s unclear what the president meant by \u201cretribution,” but Trump earlier in the town hall called for prison time for protesters who tear down monuments. And in a\u00a0Tuesday tweet<\/u><\/a>, Trump promised 10 years in jail for \u201canyone who vandalizes or destroys any monument, statue or other such federal property,\u201d citing the 2003 Veterans\u2019 Memorial Preservation Act.<\/p>\n

Protesters have toppled statues of Confederate generals, slaveholders and colonial figures in cities nationwide in the wake of massive protests against police brutality and racism. On Monday, demonstrators attempted to tear down a statue of former President Andrew Jackson outside the White House before law enforcement cleared the crowd.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

\u201cI can understand certain things being taken down, but they ought to go through a process legally,\u201d Trump said Thursday.<\/p>\n

In late May, Trump seemingly\u00a0urged the shooting<\/u><\/a>\u00a0of looters in Minneapolis amid protests over the death of George Floyd. Trump has repeatedly called for\u00a0\u201claw and order\u201d<\/u><\/a>\u00a0as protests continued throughout June.<\/p>\n
