{"id":183305,"date":"2023-08-28T16:35:53","date_gmt":"2023-08-28T20:35:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=183305"},"modified":"2023-08-28T16:40:29","modified_gmt":"2023-08-28T20:40:29","slug":"gas-station-sabotage-via-fuel-contamination-in-florida-deliberately-carried-out-just-prior-to-emergency-storm-evacuation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=183305","title":{"rendered":"<h2><b><span style=\"color: #000000;\">GAS STATION SABOTAGE VIA FUEL CONTAMINATION IN FLORIDA DELIBERATELY CARRIED OUT JUST PRIOR TO EMERGENCY STORM EVACUATION<\/span><\/b><\/h2>"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--more--><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-183308\" src=\"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Screen-Shot-2023-08-28-at-4.35.09-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"635\" height=\"461\" srcset=\"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Screen-Shot-2023-08-28-at-4.35.09-PM.png 635w, http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Screen-Shot-2023-08-28-at-4.35.09-PM-300x218.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-183307\" src=\"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Screen-Shot-2023-08-28-at-4.27.15-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"591\" height=\"378\" srcset=\"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Screen-Shot-2023-08-28-at-4.27.15-PM.png 591w, http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Screen-Shot-2023-08-28-at-4.27.15-PM-300x192.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 591px) 100vw, 591px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>By Chris TischTimes staff<br \/>\nRomy EllenbogenTimes staff<br \/>\nMax ChesnesTimes staff<br \/>\nTAMPA BAY TIMES<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Florida officials are warning of a \u201cpotentially widespread fuel contamination\u201d that may have resulted in people getting fuel from some Florida gas stations that could harm or disable their engines just as Tropical Storm Idalia may put residents on the road or in search of gas to power their generators.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services issued an alert Sunday afternoon stating that gas that was supplied out of Port Tampa Bay by Citgo had become contaminated because of \u201chuman error.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">People who received fuel from more than two dozen gas stations across Florida\u2019s Gulf Coast, including several in the immediate Tampa area, could have contaminated fuel if it was purchased after 10 a.m. Saturday, according to the agency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Citgo-supplied gas stations as far south as Fort Myers and as north as Brooksville were believed to have received the contaminated fuel, according to the agency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The alert initially said that Citgo \u201cwill not release the list of gas stations that received contaminated fuel\u201d but that state officials knew that fuel from the port \u201cserves gas stations in the greater Tampa region north to Chiefland, and on the west side of Florida south to Naples.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cCitgo sells gas to BJs, 7-Eleven, and also some unbranded stations,\u201d department officials said in the alert, noting that they \u201cwill send a more accurate list as it becomes available.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The state later released the stations that were believed to have received the contaminated fuel. (The list of stations is at the bottom of this story.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The announcement was made soon after\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/hurricane\/2023\/08\/27\/tropical-storm-idalia-expected-form-sunday-may-threaten-florida-hurricane\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tropical Storm Idalia formed<\/a>. The storm is expected to become a hurricane later this week and threaten the west coast of Florida, where the contaminated fuel was distributed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The issue was raised at a news conference Gov. Ron DeSantis held Sunday afternoon to talk about storm preparation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIt has nothing to do with the storm, but it\u2019s happening right on the eve of the storm,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">DeSantis acknowledged the fuel situation may complicate matters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201dYou\u2019re going to have people potentially just stuck on the side of the road, I mean, if you fill up your tank with diesel and then you start driving it, it\u2019s not going to end well,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Gas that is contaminated with diesel fuel has \u201cthe potential of causing engine damage or affecting operability,\u201d the department\u2019s alert states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cImpacted stations have been asked to stop selling gas until the contaminated fuel is replaced and tanks are cleaned. Once the stations are cleared or have completed a corrective action plan fuel will once again be safe for purchase,\u201d the alert states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">A spokesperson for Port Tampa Bay said Citgo is a \u201cprivately-held terminal,\u201d which means the port itself has no oversight over Citgo\u2019s facility, even though it rests within the port\u2019s footprint. That means any details about the \u201chuman error\u201d leading to fuel contamination would have to come directly from the company, according to spokesperson Lisa Wolf-Chason.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201dThey employ their own people, they have their own operators, and they own the land they operate off of,\u201d Wolf-Chason said in a phone interview. \u201cI know this is unfortunate news for Citgo, but we have been working with other fuel operators to make sure they\u2019re prepared for the storm and can help supply the state with fuel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">State officials opened a hotline to receive complaints from people who believe they bought the bad fuel.
