A House\u00a0Democrat<\/a>\u00a0who\u2019s a frequent critic of the Trump administration submitted a resolution Tuesday calling for the impeachment of Attorney General\u00a0William Barr<\/a>.<\/p>\n House Resolution 1032, filed by U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen of\u00a0Tennessee<\/a>, accuses the nation\u2019s top law enforcement officer of using his job to pursue political goals.<\/p>\n \u201cToday, I introduced #HRes1032, which would authorize an impeachment inquiry into Attorney General Barr,\u201d Cohen wrote on Twitter. \u201cHe has politicized the DOJ, undermined the rule of law, abused his power, obstructed justice & violated the first amendment. He is not fit to be Attorney General.\u201d<\/p>\n Cohen specifically cited Barr\u2019s role in Justice Department decision to change sentencing recommendations for former Trump adviser Roger Stone — who was convicted on charges of obstruction, lying to Congress and witness tampering \u2013 and Barr\u2019s role in the removal of protesters from Lafayette Square near the White House on June 1, prior to a Trump photo op outside St. John\u2019s Episcopal Church.<\/p>\n The congressman\u2019s action came five months after House Democrats\u2019 efforts to impeach President Trump failed when the Senate voted Feb. 5 to clear the president of two counts of wrongdoing.<\/p>\n It also came just days after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi\u00a0dismissed any effort to impeach Barr<\/a>\u00a0as being ill-advised.<\/p>\n \u201cAt this point, let\u2019s solve our problems by going to the polls and voting on Election Day,\u201d Pelosi said during a Washington Post Live interview.<\/p>\n House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., similarly called a Barr impeachment effort a \u201cwaste of time,\u201d Politico reported, although Nadler also said last week that his committee \u201cmay very well\u201d seek to remove Barr.<\/p>\n Last week, Justice Department spokeswoman Kerri Kupec hit back at any talk of impeaching Barr, who has led the department since February 2019 after previously serving in the post from November 1991 to January 1993\u00a0under former President George H.W. Bush.<\/p>\n Kupec, during an appearance on\u00a0\u201cFox & Friends,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0dismissed such efforts as \u201ca political thing.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIf people have a problem with Bill Barr coming back to the Department of Justice to restore one system of justice, not a two-tiered system, I think that says a lot more about the critics than it does about the attorney general,\u201d\u00a0Kupec said<\/a>. \u201cBecause that is what he has done again and again.<\/p>\n \u201cHe approaches all cases with an open mind. He judges them according to the facts and the law without regard to political consideration,\u201d Kupec continued. \u201cThis is what he promised to at his confirmation, this is what he has done throughout his tenure as attorney general, and that is what he will continue to do until his last day as AG.\u201d<\/p>\n Cohen, a member of the House Judiciary Committee, began circulating his resolution on Capitol Hill last week, hoping to attract support from fellow House members, Politico reported.<\/p>\n At least two other House Democrats have publicly advocated for impeaching Barr,\u00a0according to Politico<\/a>. They are U.S. Reps. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Bill Pascrell of New Jersey.<\/p>\n House Democrats previously impeached Trump last December on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress in connection with a July 2019 phone call with the president of Ukraine.<\/p>\n Cohen has a reputation for being something of a showman in the House.<\/p>\n
