An estimated 151,700 to 575,400 people died from the virus across the globe, according to the CDC.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>White House coronavirus advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci said Tuesday that U.S. health officials are keeping an eye on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/06\/30\/new-strain-of-flu-in-china-has-pandemic-potential-scientists-warns.html\">a new strain of flu carried by pigs<\/a> in China that has characteristics of the 2009 H1N1 virus and 1918 pandemic flu.<\/p>\n<p>The virus,\u00a0which scientists are calling \u201cG4 EA H1N1,\u201d has not yet been shown to infect humans but it is exhibiting \u201creassortment capabilities,\u201d Fauci,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/06\/30\/watch-live-fauci-other-health-officials-testify-at-senate-coronavirus-hearing.html\">director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee during a hearing.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn other words, when you get a brand new virus that turns out to be a pandemic virus it\u2019s either due to mutations and\/or the reassortment or exchanges of genes,\u201d he told lawmakers. \u201cAnd they\u2019re seeing virus in swine, in pigs now, that have characteristics of the 2009 H1N1, of the original 1918, which many of our flu viruses have remnants of that in it, as well as segments from other hosts, like swine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0H1N1 swine flu and 1918 pandemic flu were both considered horrific viruses that spread across the globe.<\/p>\n<p>The H1N1 swine flu emerged in Mexico in April 2009, infecting 60.8 million people in the United States alone and at least 700 million worldwide. An estimated 151,700 to 575,400 people died from the virus across the globe, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It is now seen as one of a variety of seasonal flu viruses.<\/p>\n<p>The 1918 flu, which Fauci has often compared to Covid-19, is estimated to have killed between 30 million and 50 million people, according to the CDC. More than 20 million people died in World War I, by comparison.<\/p>\n<p>The new strain that is spreading in pig farms in China has been identified as having \u201call the essential hallmarks of a candidate pandemic virus,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/06\/30\/new-strain-of-flu-in-china-has-pandemic-potential-scientists-warns.html\">scientists say.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18676\" src=\"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/106097853-1566880524314gettyimages-53323226.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" srcset=\"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/106097853-1566880524314gettyimages-53323226.jpg 750w, http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/106097853-1566880524314gettyimages-53323226-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Fauci said Tuesday there\u2019s always \u201cthe possibility that you might have another swine flu-type outbreak as we had in 2009.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s something that still is in the stage of examination,\u201d he said. It\u2019s not \u201can immediate threat where you\u2019re seeing infections, but it\u2019s something we need to keep our eye on, just the way we did in 2009 with the emergence of the swine flu.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fauci\u2019s comments came as the coronavirus continues to rapidly spread across the U.S., with the seven-day average of new cases growing by 5% or more in at least 40 states, including Arizona, Texas, Florida and Oklahoma,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/06\/30\/coronavirus-live-updates.html\">according to a CNBC analysis of data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Public health officials and physicians\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/06\/18\/trump-coronavirus-task-force-absent-as-states-struggle-with-new-cases.html\">have criticized<\/a>\u00a0the Trump administration\u2019s lack of coordinated response to the virus. In recent weeks, President\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0has downplayed the virus, saying\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/06\/19\/white-house-insists-coronavirus-is-a-priority-as-trump-prepares-for-rally.html\">the U.S. is nearing the end of the pandemic<\/a>, contrary to experts in his own administration.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month,\u00a0Fauci said Covid-19 turned out to be his \u201cworst nightmare\u201d come to life as the coronavirus continues to rapidly spread across the globe.<\/p>\n<p>He said the virus is \u201cvery different\u201d from other outbreaks such as Ebola and HIV. The virus jumped\u00a0from an animal host and has a high degree of transmissibility and mortality, he said.
