{"id":188710,"date":"2023-09-30T08:17:32","date_gmt":"2023-09-30T12:17:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=188710"},"modified":"2023-09-30T08:17:46","modified_gmt":"2023-09-30T12:17:46","slug":"us-tops-500-mass-shootings-this-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=188710","title":{"rendered":"<h1>US tops 500 mass shootings this year<\/h1>"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>A decade ago, the country saw nearly half as many incidents in the entire year<\/h3>\n<p><!--more-->RT.com<\/p>\n<div class=\"article__cover article__cover-left\">\n<div class=\"media \"><picture><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"media__item lazyautosizes lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/mf.b37mrtl.ru\/files\/2023.09\/xxs\/6507d97d2030273c963b0bb4.jpg\" sizes=\"487px\" alt=\"US tops 500 mass shootings this year\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mf.b37mrtl.ru\/files\/2023.09\/xxs\/6507d97d2030273c963b0bb4.jpg\" \/><\/picture><\/div>\n<div class=\"media__footer media__footer_bottom \">\n<h5 class=\"media__title media__title_arcticle\"><span data-role=\"title\">Attendees listen to speakers during an event on the<br \/>\nNational Mall calling for action on preventing gun<br \/>\nviolence on September 13, 2023 in Washington, DC.<br \/>\n<\/span><span data-role=\"copyright-symbol\">\u00a9\u00a0<\/span><span data-role=\"copyright\">\u00a0Win McNamee\/Getty Images<\/span><\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__text text \">\n<p>The number of mass shootings in the US surpassed the 500 mark over the weekend, according to the Gun Violence Archive (GVA), which averages to almost two mass shootings a day.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, the Denver Police Department posted an alert on X (formerly Twitter) confirming a shooting that left\u00a0five people injured, which\u00a0was the 500th incident of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Just hours later, El Paso police reported that they were investigating an early morning shooting in East El Paso which claimed the life of a 19-year-old man and left\u00a0five more injured, bringing the total number of mass shootings to 501.<\/p>\n<p>According to the GVA website, a mass shooting is defined as an incident in which four or more\u00a0people are shot and either injured or killed, not including the shooter.<\/p>\n<p>2021 had the highest number of mass shootings in US history, with 689 reported incidents, and while the numbers fell to 647 in 2022, FBI data showed a higher number of casualties.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) released\u00a0its annual crime and safety report, which revealed 188 school shootings with casualties in the 2021-22 school year, more than twice the number of incidents documented a year before.<\/p>\n<p>Mass shootings have been on the rise in the last decade; 273 incidents were reported in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>A study published by the Annals of Internal Medicine in February\u00a0indicates\u00a0that gun ownership has grown\u00a0in recent years, with 7.5 million US adults becoming new gun owners between January 2019 and April 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The Second Amendment to the\u00a0US Constitution guarantees the right to bear arms, and\u00a0around a third of US adults say they personally own a gun. However, a poll conducted by Gallup in October 2022 reveals that the majority of Americans are in favor of gun control, with 57% supporting stricter gun laws.<\/p>\n<p>The issue, however, remains extremely divisive.
