Hydroxychloroquine Lowers COVID-19 Death Rate, US Study Finds<\/h1>\n

The anti-malarial drug\u00a0hydroxychloroquine<\/a>\u00a0lowers the death rate of COVID-19 patients, U.S. researchers have said.<\/strong><\/p>\n Researchers conducted a retrospective analysis of over 2,500 patients hospitalized between March 10 and May 2 in the Henry Ford Health System in\u00a0Michigan<\/a>. Over 2,000 of the patients were given hydroxychloroquine or the anti-malarial with\u00a0azithromycin, an antibiotic.<\/p>\n The study<\/a>\u00a0found 13 percent of those who received hydroxychloroquine alone died compared to 26.4 percent who didn\u2019t receive the drug.<\/strong><\/p>\n Hydroxychloroquine alone decreased the mortality hazard ratio by 66 percent and the anti-malarial with the antibiotic decreased the ratio by 71 percent, researchers said.<\/p>\n The vast majority of patients were given the drug within 48 hours of admission.<\/p>\n \u201cOur analysis shows that using hydroxychloroquine helped saves lives,\u201d neurosurgeon Dr. Steven Kalkanis, senior vice president and chief academic officer of the health system, said in a statement. \u201cAs doctors and scientists, we look to the data for insight. And the data here is clear that there was benefit to using the drug as a treatment for sick, hospitalized patients.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Patients who received hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin also had a lower mortality than people who received neither, as did patients who received azithromycin.<\/p>\n \u201cThe findings have been highly analyzed and peer-reviewed,\u201d<\/strong> added Dr. Marcus Zervos, division head of Infectious Disease for Henry Ford, who co-authored the study with epidemiologist Dr. Samia Arshad.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n \u201cWe attribute our findings that differ from other studies to early treatment, and part of a combination of interventions that were done in supportive care of patients, including careful cardiac monitoring,\u201d Zervos said.<\/p>\n \u201cOur dosing also differed from other studies not showing a benefit of the drug. And other studies are either not peer reviewed, have limited numbers of patients, different patient populations or other differences from our patients.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n None of the patients experienced side effects, researchers said, although patients who were monitored for a heart condition were recommended not to take the treatment.<\/p>\n The median age of patients was 64. The group was 51 percent male and 56 percent African-American.<\/strong><\/p>\n The conclusions came from a peer-reviewed study that was published in the International Journal of Infectious Diseases.<\/p>\n Regardless of what treatment they received, mortality was highest in patients older than 65, patients who identified as Caucasian, patients admitted with reduced oxygen levels, and patients who required care in intensive care units, researchers said.<\/p>\n The results should be interpreted with some caution, Zervos said, and require further confirmation in randomized controlled clinical trials. Hydrxychloroquine should be used outside hospitals, he said.<\/p>\n A group of Canadian researchers said in\u00a0a commentary<\/a>\u00a0published in the same journal that the results were fundamentally limited because the study was retrospective and questioned whether proper methods were used by the Henry Ford researchers. The patients who did not receive any treatment, the critics wrote, may have been heading towards death, which would skew the numbers.<\/p>\n Hydroxychloroquine and the closely related chloroquine have been\u00a0closely scrutinized since President Donald Trump touted them earlier this year as potential treatments\u00a0<\/strong>for COVID-19, a disease caused by\u00a0the\u00a0CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus<\/a>. Several trials studying the drug\u00a0were stopped<\/a>\u00a0last month<\/a>.<\/p>\n The most circulated study, a retrospective that researchers claimed involved nearly 100,000 patients,\u00a0was retracted in early June<\/a>\u00a0after three of them said they couldn\u2019t verify the figures.<\/strong><\/p>\n Other studies have suggested hydroxychloroquine is effective.\u00a0One showed<\/a>\u00a0it led to a higher rate of discharge from hospitals when\u00a0combined with zinc and azithromycin.<\/strong><\/p>\n Indian researchers said the anti-malarial\u00a0is an effective prophylactic<\/a>\u00a0against the CCP virus.<\/strong><\/p>\n The Food and Drug Administration\u00a0ended<\/a>\u00a0the emergency use authorization for the the anti-malarials last month.<\/p>\n It is no longer reasonable to believe that hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine may be effective in treating COVID-19, the agency\u2019s chief scientist, Denise Hinton, said.<\/p>\n Some of the trials pointed to side effects, including irregular heart rhythms, the agency warned.<\/p>\n The Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, which supports hydroxychloroquine and compiled\u00a0a list<\/a>\u00a0of studies suggesting it is effective,\u00a0<\/strong>said the authorization only applied to doses donated to the Strategic National Stockpile.
