Kroger Stops Giving Customers Change As Nationwide Coin Shortage Worsens<\/h1>\n

Due to an\u00a0ongoing, and in some respect, a worsening\u00a0nationwide coin shortage<\/a>,\u00a0The Kroger Company has stopped returning coins to cash-paying customers. At the same time,\u00a0remainders can be donated to a charity or transferred\u00a0to the customers’ loyalty cards<\/strong>, reported\u00a0NewsChannel 5 Nashville WTVF<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Kroger officials said, “at Kroger, we are implementing several creative solutions to minimize the impact to our customers…We know this is an inconvenience for our customers, and we appreciate their patience. The Treasury Department expects the shortage to diminish as more regions of the country reopen.”<\/p>\n

Dayton Daily News, a\u00a0sister publication of\u00a0The Atlanta Journal-Constitution<\/a>, spoke with\u00a0Kroger spokeswoman Erin Rolfes who said\u00a0the Federal Reserve\u00a0is experiencing a coin shortage.<\/p>\n

Last month, the Federal Reserve warned coin disruptions were coming due to the COVID-19 pandemic and shutdown of the economy.<\/p>\n

Here’s an excerpt of the warning:<\/p>\n

“The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly disrupted the supply chain and normal circulation patterns for U.S. coin.<\/p>\n

“In the past few months, coin deposits from depository institutions to the Federal Reserve have declined significantly, and the U.S. Mint’s production of the coin also decreased due to measures put in place to protect its employees.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In late June,\u00a0supermarket chain\u00a0Meijer Inc.<\/a>\u00a0told customers at 250\u00a0stores that\u00a0“self-checkout registers” will only\u00a0accept “electronic payment only” due to a “national coin shortage.”<\/p>\n

Google search trend\u00a0shows “coin shortage” has hit a record high, began erupting in early June.<\/p>\n

Besides Kroger and Meijer,\u00a0Dollar Tree and Wawa have also reported coin shortages, resulting in\u00a0cash-paying customers not being able to receive exact change.<\/p>\n
