Christianity Today\u2019s editorial on Thursday calling for President Trump\u2019s impeachment and removal has triggered an intense backlash from the conservative evangelical community.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The magazine\u2019s evangelical critics say it has a long history of opposing Trump, and no longer reflects a conservative worldview.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Johnnie Moore, the spokesman for Trump evangelical advisory council, told Newsmax in a statement: “This editorial will have less than zero effect on the evangelical support of the president. In fact, it will motivate the community to do more.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“It is a never-Trumper, never-Trumping,”\u00a0he added. “Evangelicals support the president because of his policies and they see this impeachment as insincere, exclusively partisan, without legal merit and politically motivated.”<\/div>\n

Written by\u00a0Christianity Today (CT) editor Mark Galli<\/a>, the editorial claims Trump\u2019s conduct “is not only a violation of the Constitution”\u00a0but is also “profoundly immoral.”<\/div>\n

The column by Galli, who has announced he will step down next month after 30 years at the Chicago-based publication whose circulation is about 80,000, urged evangelicals to reconsider their stalwart support for the president.<\/div>\n

“To the many evangelicals who continue to support Mr. Trump in spite of his blackened moral record,”\u00a0Galli wrote, “we might say this: Remember who you are and whom you serve. Consider how your justification of Mr. Trump influences your witness to your Lord and Savior.”<\/div>\n

Galli\u2019s column triggered an immediate backlash from Christian conservatives, who suggested the publication has been drifting left for some time and speaks only to a subset of the evangelical community. Other critics charge the publication no longer reflects the values of its founder, the late venerated Rev. Billy Graham.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Liberals active on social media have been playing up the publication\u2019s significance, suggesting the editorial could signal the beginning of an evangelical backlash against Trump, or trigger a major divide within the evangelical community.<\/div>\n
