{"id":2212,"date":"2019-12-23T11:20:38","date_gmt":"2019-12-23T15:20:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=2212"},"modified":"2019-12-23T11:21:02","modified_gmt":"2019-12-23T15:21:02","slug":"why-is-the-earths-magnetic-north-pole-moving-so-fast-toward-siberia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=2212","title":{"rendered":"Why is the Earth&#8217;s Magnetic North Pole moving so fast toward Siberia?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Earth\u2019s Magnetic North Pole is Moving Faster Than Ever, Leaving Scientists Baffled<\/h1>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>The new report also confirms that Earth\u2019s magnetic field is still weakening, which could collapse the field entirely and flip polarity if it continues.<\/h3>\n<p>ELIAS MARAT<br \/>\nThe Mind Unleashed<\/p>\n<p><strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/themindunleashed.com\/\">TMU<\/a>)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 Earth\u2019s magnetic north pole is moving at unprecedented speeds and scientists are still unsure of why this is the case.<\/p>\n<p>What makes these recent changes so interesting is the sheer\u00a0<em>speed<\/em>\u00a0at which they are occurring.<\/p>\n<p>Some fear that the rapid movement of the magnetic north pole could cause problems for Global Positioning Systems (GPS), military operations, airliners, and other navigation systems that rely on pinpointing where precisely the pole is located.<\/p>\n<p>Migratory animals such as birds, butterflies, and whales also use the magnetic field for directions.<\/p>\n<p>The latest report from NOAA, the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncei.noaa.gov\/news\/world-magnetic-model-2020-released\">World Magnetic Model<\/a>\u201d for 2020, shows the pole rapidly speeding in the direction of Siberia. However, the trajectory of the pole will likely change.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">NGA in partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NOAA?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@NOAA<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BritGeoSurvey?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@BritGeoSurvey<\/a>, has released the World Magnetic Model 2020 update, providing more precise navigational data for all military and civilian planes, ships, submarines and GPS units. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/VGyfui42MB\">pic.twitter.com\/VGyfui42MB<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; NGA (@NGA_GEOINT) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NGA_GEOINT\/status\/1207026468234104837?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 17, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t the first time that this has happened\u2014polar wandering has been constant since the North Pole was first discovered,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncei.noaa.gov\/news\/world-magnetic-model-2020-released\">according<\/a>\u00a0to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).<\/p>\n<p>NOAA\u2019s National Centres for Environmental Information\u00a0explained:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cSince its first formal discovery in 1831, the north magnetic pole has travelled around 1,400 miles (2,250 km).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>This wandering has been generally quite slow, allowing scientists to keep track of its position fairly easily.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As recently as 2000, the magnetic North Pole was clocked at moving 6.2 miles per year toward Northern Russia, but data for the next two decades shows the average rate suddenly increasing to roughly 34 miles per year in the same direction, while the latest readings in 2019 show it slightly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2019-12-world-magnetic-north-pole-siberia.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">decreasing<\/a>\u00a0to about 31 miles per year.<\/p>\n<p>The World Magnetic Model predicts the average speed will slow down to roughly 25 miles per year from 2020 to 2025.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThe WMM2020 forecasts that the northern magnetic pole will continue drifting toward Russia, although at a slowly decreasing speed\u2014down to about 40 km per year compared to the average speed of 55 km over the past twenty years.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-78051 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/themindunleashed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/kCO5AMa-1024x901.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 639px) 98vw, (max-width: 1199px) 64vw, 651px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/themindunleashed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/kCO5AMa-1024x901.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/themindunleashed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/kCO5AMa-300x264.jpg 300w, https:\/\/themindunleashed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/kCO5AMa-768x676.jpg 768w\" alt=\"\" width=\"651\" height=\"572\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For the first time in recorded history, the pole has even passed by the Greenwich meridian\u2014the imaginary line used to indicate 0\u00b0 longitude and determine time zones.<\/p>\n<p>Geomagnetic specialist Ciaran Beggan from the British Geological Survey (BGS) told the\u00a0<em>Financial Times<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThe movement since the 1990s is much faster than at any time for at least four centuries.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We really don\u2019t know much about the changes in the core that\u2019s driving it.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The new model also confirms that Earth\u2019s magnetic field is weakening. If this continues, scientists say the field could collapse entirely and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2018-12-earth-magnetic-poles-flip.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">flip polarity<\/a>\u2014changing magnetic north to south and vice versa\u2014and the consequences could be dire for the planet.<\/p>\n<p>But before we begin to panic, we should remember that the Earth\u2019s magnetic poles have already flipped up to 100 times in the past 20 million years, the last reversal occurring roughly 773,000 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, the rapid movement of the North Pole garnered headlines when scientists revealed that the north was moving so fast that they had to update their model of the planet\u2019s magnetic field much earlier than expected.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, the<em>\u00a0Mind Unleashed\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/themindunleashed.com\/2019\/02\/earth-magnetic-north-pole-russia.html\">reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThe drift is the result of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-019-00007-1\">processes<\/a>\u00a0deep in the center of the planet, where the liquid outer core comprised of iron and nickel spins and flows like water, serving as a conductor for Earth\u2019s magnetic field.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The recent change in the flow of the fluid is believed to be similar to the formation of a jet stream in the atmosphere, leading to changes in the planet\u2019s magnetic field.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2026 these changes are all part and parcel of the natural behavior of the Earth and have not been caused by human activity.
