McConnell: ‘Let’s quit the charade’ on impeachment<\/h1>\n

Senate Majority Leader\u00a0Mitch McConnell<\/a><\/span>\u00a0(R-Ky.) on Monday slammed Democratic senators as well as Speaker\u00a0Nancy Pelosi<\/a><\/span>\u00a0(D-Calif.) over her decision to withhold House-passed articles of impeachment against\u00a0President Trump<\/a><\/span>\u00a0from the\u00a0upper chamber\u00a0until Republicans guarantee a “fair” trial.<\/p>\n

During an interview with “Fox & Friends,” the\u00a0GOP leader knocked the idea that Senate Minority Leader\u00a0Charles Schumer<\/a><\/span>\u00a0(D-N.Y.), Sen.\u00a0Elizabeth Warren<\/a><\/span>\u00a0(D-Mass.) or Sen.\u00a0Bernie Sanders<\/a><\/span>\u00a0(I-Vt.) would act as impartial judges\u00a0during\u00a0the president’s Senate trial, claiming that it was an innately political exercise.<\/p>\n

“Do you think\u00a0Chuck Schumer<\/a><\/span>\u00a0is impartial? Do you think Elizabeth Warren is impartial? Bernie Sanders is impartial? So let’s quit the charade. This is a political exercise. … All I’m asking of Schumer is that we treat Trump the same way we treated [President] Clinton,” McConnell said.<\/p>\n

“[Pelosi] apparently believes that she can tell us how to run the trial,” he added of the Speaker’s decision to withhold the two articles of impeachment.<\/p>\n

“Look, we’re at an impasse. We can’t do anything until the Speaker sends the papers over, so everybody enjoy the holidays,” he added.<\/p>\n

McConnell’s comments follow Pelosi’s statement\u00a0on Thursday\u00a0that\u00a0she would delay sending the impeachment articles to the Senate until she received information on\u00a0\u201cthe process that is set forth in the Senate\u201d for Trump’s trial.<\/p>\n

“We don’t know the arena that we’re in. Frankly, I don\u2019t care what the Republicans say,” she said. \u201cWe would hope there would be a fair process just as I hope they would honor the Constitution.”<\/p>\n

The move has drawn criticism from the White House and allies of Trump, who argue that Pelosi is stalling on the issue to\u00a0force a longer Senate trial that would be more politically damaging to the president.<\/p>\n

McConnell himself has been criticized for saying he would coordinate with the\u00a0White House during the proceedings in the Senate.<\/p>\n
