<\/span>Cowardly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Those describe America\u2019s ongoing responses to the savage, unprovoked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=M8YjxbzGlzw\"><span class=\"s2\">attack<\/span><\/a> on peaceful protestors by Turkish President Erdogan\u2019s security detail in Washington, DC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It happened on Tuesday afternoon, May 16, 2017 following his meeting with President Trump.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Shortly after his motorcade arrived at the Turkish ambassador\u2019s Sheridan Circle residence, where protestors had lawfully assembled across the street, Erdogan commanded his bodyguards to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/not-on-american-soil-responding-to-the-beating-of_b_59380ec7e4b04331b6694b03\"><span class=\"s2\">attack, attack.<\/span><\/a>\u201c<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Breaking through police lines, they kicked, punched, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=m79dl4yq15s\"><span class=\"s2\">bloodied<\/span><\/a> the protesters, including women.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Other Turks, purportedly not in Erdogan\u2019s entourage, did the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2017\/05\/26\/us\/turkey-protesters-attack-video-analysis.html\"><span class=\"s2\">same<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">The motorcade then brutalized a female demonstrator on its way to the Turkish Embassy.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Assaults on Americans <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/international\/469705-erdogan-visit-stirs-memories-of-violent-protests\/\"><span class=\"s2\">continued<\/span><\/a> there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The day saw a minimum of 11 persons, some with severe injuries, transported to the hospital. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s3\">Among those <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/international\/469705-erdogan-visit-stirs-memories-of-violent-protests\/\"><span class=\"s2\">set upon<\/span><\/a> and injured: Two<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> U.S. Diplomatic Security members, six Secret Service agents, and a DC police officer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Turks Allowed to Escape<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Turkish Ambassador Serdar Kilic promptly <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/international\/469705-erdogan-visit-stirs-memories-of-violent-protests\/\"><span class=\"s2\">asked<\/span><\/a> that the bodyguards not be detained.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Sure enough, some 90 minutes later, U.S. security released them and accompanied Erdogan\u2019s caravan to Joint Base Andrews where they jetted off to Turkey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s4\">It was the <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/international\/469705-erdogan-visit-stirs-memories-of-violent-protests\/\"><span class=\"s2\">fastest<\/span><\/a> \u201cjoint move and departure I\u2019ve ever seen,\u201d said one U.S. agent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">The administration let the Turkish bodyguards flee, <i>allegedly<\/i> because they had diplomatic immunity.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Indignation<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">Then, too late, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecaliforniacourier.com\/erdogans-guards-beating-protesters-reinforces-terrible-turk-image\/\"><span class=\"s2\">came<\/span><\/a> the indignation, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li8\"><span class=\"s3\">The State Department expressed<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> its \u201cconcern to the Turkish government in the strongest possible terms.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li9\"><span class=\"s4\">The bodyguards should be \u201ccharged &amp; prosecuted,\u201d said a unanimous House resolution in June.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Astonishingly, Trump said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2019\/01\/trump-stands-by-while-erdogan-orders-attack-protesters\/580093\/\"><span class=\"s2\">nothing<\/span><\/a> about the attack.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Perhaps this was due to his and his associates\u2019 close <a href=\"https:\/\/countercurrents.org\/2022\/10\/trumps-turkish-problem\/\"><span class=\"s2\">relationships<\/span><\/a> with Turkey and Erdogan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">There was good news though.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On August 29, 2017, a federal grand jury <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voanews.com\/a\/turkish-security-officials-indicted-attacking-us-protesters\/4006373.html\"><span class=\"s2\">indicted<\/span><\/a> 15 Turkish bodyguards on felony charges. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">That suggested that releasing them had been a serious error.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But then came Secretary of State Rex Tillerson\u2019s disgraceful meeting with Erdogan in Ankara on February 15, 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>America Caves in to Turkey <\/b><\/span><span class=\"s7\">\u2014 <\/span><span class=\"s1\"><b>Again<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Tillerson ordered that <i>no<\/i> American translator, aide, or transcriber attend the meeting.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">That <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/02\/15\/politics\/tillerson-erdogan-turkey-meeting-no-translator\/index.html\"><span class=\"s2\">violated<\/span><\/a> State Department protocol <i>and<\/i> ensured that no American could <a href=\"https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/FaEWnJbx79g\/maxresdefault.jpg\"><span class=\"s2\">witness<\/span><\/a> what Tillerson would bargain away.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Just the day before, the Justice Department moved <\/span><span class=\"s7\">\u2014<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">surely <i>not<\/i> coincidentally <\/span><span class=\"s7\">\u2014<\/span><span class=\"s8\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> to <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2018\/03\/22\/politics\/turkey-erdogan-security-charges-dropped\/index.html\"><span class=\"s2\">drop<\/span><\/a> its case against most of Erdogan\u2019s bodyguards.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Charges were dismissed eight days later.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Apparently, the entire detail has since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voanews.com\/a\/united-states-dismisses-charges-erdogan-bodyguards\/4311950.html\"><span class=\"s2\">dodged<\/span><\/a> U.S. justice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Tillerson obviously struck a Faustian deal to let Turkey\u2019s unhinged president and his thugs off the hook.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">That betrayed the American security agents, police, and demonstrators whom the Turks had assaulted and injured.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It also mocked the First Amendment\u2019s freedoms of assembly and speech.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">American credibility took a hit as Ankara got away<\/span><span class=\"s7\"> \u2014 like so <\/span><span class=\"s1\">many times before and since <\/span><span class=\"s7\">\u2014 <\/span><span class=\"s1\">with its crimes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Turkish Thuggery and Western Cowardice<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li10\"><span class=\"s10\">2009: Erdogan\u2019s <\/span><span class=\"s11\">bodyguards <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecaliforniacourier.com\/erdogans-guards-beating-protesters-reinforces-terrible-turk-image\/\"><span class=\"s12\">brawled<\/span><\/a><\/span><span class=\"s10\"> with President Obama\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2009\/sep\/23\/turkish-diplomats-cause-scuffle-around-obama\/\"><span class=\"s12\">Secret Service<\/span><\/a> detail and police in NYC.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li10\"><span class=\"s10\">2011: Inside the UN, Erdogan\u2019s detail <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/politics\/un-security-men-in-brawl-with-erdogan-bodyguards-2361943.html\"><span class=\"s12\">battled<\/span><\/a> with the organization\u2019s security staff, two of whom were <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2011\/09\/26\/the-turkish-tussle-at-turtle-bay\/\"><span class=\"s12\">injured<\/span><\/a> with one taken to the hospital.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li10\"><span class=\"s10\">2014: Turkish security threatened and pushed around journalists while the latter covered a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.meforum.org\/65726\/erdogan-bodyguards-thugs-with-impunity-attack\"><span class=\"s12\">meeting<\/span><\/a> between Vice President Biden and Erdogan in NYC.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li10\"><span class=\"s10\">2015: Over the course of two days in Brussels, Erdogan\u2019s squad <a href=\"https:\/\/nordicmonitor.com\/2024\/03\/erdogans-bodyguards-thugs-with-impunity-in-turkeys-repressive-regime-receive-more-cash\/\"><span class=\"s12\">clashed<\/span><\/a> with police and elbowed a Belgian VIP security agent.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s16\">2016:<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/worldviews\/wp\/2016\/03\/31\/turkeys-erdogan-came-to-washington-and-things-got-a-bit-crazy\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Outside<\/span><\/a> DC\u2019s Brookings Institution, Erdogan\u2019s detail \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/blog\/order-from-chaos\/2016\/04\/04\/turkeys-downward-spiral-and-the-scuffles-at-erdogans-brookings-speech\/\"><span class=\"s2\">roughed up<\/span><\/a> protesters [and] tried to drag away &#8216;undesired&#8217; journalists.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s4\">2016: In Ecuador, Erdogan\u2019s crew <a href=\"https:\/\/nordicmonitor.com\/2024\/03\/erdogans-bodyguards-thugs-with-impunity-in-turkeys-repressive-regime-receive-more-cash\/\"><span class=\"s2\">broke<\/span><\/a> a parliament member\u2019s nose.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li13\"><span class=\"s13\">2018: While Erdogan visited South Africa, Turkish Embassy guards attacked peaceful protesters, leaving at least one <a href=\"https:\/\/nordicmonitor.com\/2024\/03\/erdogans-bodyguards-thugs-with-impunity-in-turkeys-repressive-regime-receive-more-cash\/\"><span class=\"s17\">bloodied<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li14\"><span class=\"s10\">2019: A <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/general-news-553c8c38995d4b6b845a4efb3c410f28\"><span class=\"s12\">scuffle<\/span><\/a> between Erdogan\u2019s team and Sarajevo airport police broke out after the Turks refused to hand over their firearms as required by Bosnian law.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p15\"><span class=\"s13\">No wonder Turkish security details act with impunity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p15\"><span class=\"s13\">America has learned nothing from these attacks or, more likely, is OK with being spat on by Turkey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p15\"><span class=\"s13\">More <i>generally<\/i>, and contrary to popular belief, neither military power nor diplomatic skill explains Ankara\u2019s feats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p15\"><span class=\"s13\">Rather, it\u2019s America\u2019s, Europe\u2019s, and others\u2019 cowardly reactions to Ankara\u2019s incessant temper tantrums, bullying, and threats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p15\"><span class=\"s13\">Erdogan sees that.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>So do Washington\u2019s enemies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p15\"><span class=\"s13\"><b>More American Impotence<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p16\"><span class=\"s1\">In October of 2019, a White House <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/10\/17\/trumps-syria-letter-made-erdogan-so-angry-he-threw-it-in-the-trash.html\"><span class=\"s2\">letter<\/span><\/a> warned Erdogan not to attack America\u2019s Kurdish allies in Syria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p16\"><span class=\"s1\">Erdogan attacked anyway, confident in U.S. weakness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Nevertheless, he again received the honor of a White House invitation.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Arriving on November 13, 2019, Erdogan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2019\/11\/13\/erdogan-said-he-returned-threatening-letter-to-trump-070771\"><span class=\"s2\">outright insulted<\/span><\/a> the president by handing him back<i> <\/i>the letter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">U.S. presidents\u2019 failures to hit back at Turkey have bred contempt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p15\"><span class=\"s13\">Erdogan\u2019s scheduled <\/span><span class=\"s19\">\u2014<\/span><span class=\"s13\"> and wholly undeserved <\/span><span class=\"s19\">\u2014 <\/span><span class=\"s13\">visit to President Biden on May 9, 2024 has, fortunately, been postponed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p15\"><span class=\"s13\">Given Ankara\u2019s destabilizing role in the Middle East\u2019s recent crises, the invitation was especially unwarranted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p15\"><span class=\"s13\">Though this isn\u2019t the place for a fuller discussion of the West\u2019s long-standing kowtowing to Turkey <\/span><span class=\"s19\">\u2014<\/span><span class=\"s13\"> going back 100+ years <\/span><span class=\"s19\">\u2014 <\/span><span class=\"s13\">a recent example proves the point.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p15\"><span class=\"s13\"><b>The Sick West<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p15\"><span class=\"s13\">Since 2022, Erdogan had blocked Finland and Sweden\u2019s joining NATO. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p15\"><span class=\"s13\">He claimed, without evidence, that the two countries were assisting Kurdish terrorists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p15\"><span class=\"s13\">Yet Turkey itself is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wnd.com\/2022\/06\/bizarro-terrorist-turkey-accuses-finland-sweden-supporting-terrorists\/\"><span class=\"s12\">major supporter<\/span><\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/C9nGG7TUIAAb5d8.jpg\"><span class=\"s12\">ISIS<\/span><\/a> and other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanrightscolumbia.org\/peace-building\/perpetrators\"><span class=\"s12\">jihadist<\/span><\/a> terrorists.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The country is a <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/Ifkte\"><span class=\"s12\">state sponsor of terrorism<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p15\"><span class=\"s13\">The two Nordic nations, the U.S., and NATO were simply too <\/span><span class=\"s20\">cowardly<\/span><span class=\"s13\"> to have <\/span><span class=\"s20\">pointed<\/span><span class=\"s13\"> that out.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Hard to believe but true.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p15\"><span class=\"s13\">Erdogan eventually lifted his baseless veto of the two nations\u2019 NATO memberships but only after the West needlessly agreed to deliver F-16s jets to Turkey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p15\"><span class=\"s13\">May 16\u2019s anti-Erdogan protesters, thankfully, are proving to have more guts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p15\"><span class=\"s13\"><b>Putting the West to Shame<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p15\"><span class=\"s13\">In 2018, the protesters filed two lawsuits that asked for over $100 million in damages from the Turkish government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p15\"><span class=\"s13\">Citing \u201cForeign Sovereign Immunity,\u201d Ankara has rebuffed the suits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In 2021 and 2022, federal courts, including the Supreme Court, rejected that defense.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/item\/global-legal-monitor\/2021-08-26\/united-states-us-protesters-lawsuit-against-turkey-can-proceed\/\"><span class=\"s2\">main<\/span><\/a> reason: The Turkish bodyguards\u2019 \u201cconduct was not plausibly related to protecting President Erdogan.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Permitting the bodyguards to flee to Turkey and subsequently dismissing charges against them were clearly grave, intentional concessions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Congress must grow a spine, cease being intimidated by Ankara\u2019s bluster, and put its foot down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Otherwise, American presidents and the State Department will continue to put the interests of Turkey
