HuffPo is beyond insane and incredibly malicious and deceitful!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div class=\"content-list-component yr-content-list-text text\" data-rapid-cpos=\"1\" data-rapid-subsec=\"paragraph\" data-rapid-parsed=\"subsec\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<h1>How Quack Doctors And Powerful GOP Operatives Spread Misinformation To Millions<\/h1>\n<h3>A group calling itself \u201cAmerica\u2019s Frontline Doctors\u201d spread false information about COVID-19 with the help of Facebook, right-wing media and President Trump.<\/h3>\n<p>By Nick Robins-Early, Hayley Miller, and Jesselyn Cook<br \/>\nHUFFPOST<\/p>\n<p>A seemingly obscure Capitol Hill press conference by a fringe group of self-proclaimed medical experts quickly became on Monday the most widely seen propaganda video about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/news\/topic\/coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"subsec:paragraph;cpos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0\" data-rapid-parsed=\"slk\" data-rapid_p=\"1\" data-v9y=\"1\">coronavirus<\/a>\u00a0after Breitbart News livestreamed it on Facebook. The post racked up tens of millions of views across social media in a matter of hours, far surpassing the traffic of the infamous \u201cPlandemic\u201d disinformation video. It grabbed the attention of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/news\/topic\/donald-trump\" data-ylk=\"subsec:paragraph;cpos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0\" data-rapid-parsed=\"slk\" data-rapid_p=\"2\" data-v9y=\"1\">President Donald Trump<\/a> and his son <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/news\/topic\/donald-trump-jr\" data-ylk=\"subsec:paragraph;cpos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0\" data-rapid-parsed=\"slk\" data-rapid_p=\"3\" data-v9y=\"1\">Donald Trump Jr.<\/a>, who had his Twitter account <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/donald-trump-jr-twitter-account-partially-suspended_n_5f202d4ec5b638cfec4a3fdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"subsec:paragraph;cpos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0\" data-rapid-parsed=\"slk\" data-rapid_p=\"4\" data-v9y=\"1\">partially suspended<\/a> for sharing a link to the video.<\/p>\n<p>The video featured a string of right-wing talking points that criticized lockdown measures, demonized public health officials, called for schools to reopen and urged Americans not to wear face masks. The speakers, who were all portrayed as doctors, often declared hydroxychloroquine a \u201ccure\u201d for COVID-19. (No legitimate medical organizations have recognized any \u201ccure\u201d for COVID-19, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/news\/2020\/06\/three-big-studies-dim-hopes-hydroxychloroquine-can-treat-or-prevent-covid-19\" data-ylk=\"subsec:paragraph;cpos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0\" data-rapid-parsed=\"slk\" data-rapid_p=\"5\" data-v9y=\"1\">multiple clinical trials<\/a> have shown hydroxychloroquine is not beneficial in treating the virus.)<\/p>\n<p>One of the main characters in the clip was a religious minister and pediatrician who has previously warned against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/stella-immanuel-trumps-new-covid-doctor-believes-in-alien-dna-demon-sperm-and-hydroxychloroquine\" data-ylk=\"subsec:paragraph;cpos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0\" data-rapid-parsed=\"slk\" data-rapid_p=\"6\" data-v9y=\"1\">having sex with demons<\/a> \u2014 so at first glance, it would be easy to characterize the video as just another random conspiracy crank finding a massive audience thanks to Facebook.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component yr-content-list-text text\" data-rapid-cpos=\"2\" data-rapid-subsec=\"paragraph\" data-rapid-parsed=\"subsec\">\n<p>But in fact, a conservative dark-money group was behind the press event that created this viral propaganda moment.\u00a0The group featured in the video, \u201cAmerica\u2019s Frontline Doctors,\u201d sprang from nowhere only days ago and appears connected to groups involved in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freedomworks.org\/content\/conservative-groups-launch-save-our-country-coalition\" data-ylk=\"subsec:paragraph;cpos:2;elm:context_link;itc:0\" data-rapid-parsed=\"slk\" data-rapid_p=\"7\" data-v9y=\"1\">Save Our Country Coalition<\/a>, which was a driving force behind the \u201creopen\u201d protests in April that lobbied for America\u2019s rapid reopening, even as death tolls spike in hot spots across the country.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component yr-content-list-text text\" data-rapid-cpos=\"3\" data-rapid-subsec=\"paragraph\" data-rapid-parsed=\"subsec\">\n<p>As Donald Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/fivethirtyeight.com\/features\/voters-are-starting-to-doubt-trumps-reelection-chances\/\" data-ylk=\"subsec:paragraph;cpos:3;elm:context_link;itc:0\" data-rapid-parsed=\"slk\" data-rapid_p=\"8\" data-v9y=\"1\">reelection prospects dwindle<\/a> amid his administration\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/trump-coronavirus-response_n_5e6ab657c5b6bd8156f4183d\" data-ylk=\"subsec:paragraph;cpos:3;elm:context_link;itc:0\" data-rapid-parsed=\"slk\" data-rapid_p=\"9\" data-v9y=\"1\">disastrous response<\/a> to the pandemic, right-wing politicians and media figures have aggressively downplayed the threat of the virus and echoed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/trump-hydroxychloroquine-coronavirus-fox-news_n_5ebaffdbc5b65b5fd63dac80\" data-ylk=\"subsec:paragraph;cpos:3;elm:context_link;itc:0\" data-rapid-parsed=\"slk\" data-rapid_p=\"10\" data-v9y=\"1\">Trump\u2019s disproven claims<\/a> about the efficacy of hydroxychloriquine, an anti-malarial drug. This week\u2019s episode, bolstered by Republican operatives, recklessly amplified by social media giants and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/trump-covid-19-false-info-video_n_5f1f984ac5b638cfec4904d4\" data-ylk=\"subsec:paragraph;cpos:3;elm:context_link;itc:0\" data-rapid-parsed=\"slk\" data-rapid_p=\"11\" data-v9y=\"1\">promoted by the president himself<\/a>, is a flashing warning about their ability to disseminate dangerous propaganda quickly and widely.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"teads-entry-placement js-teads-entry-placement\">\n<div id=\"teads-entry-desktop\" class=\"teads-entry__content\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component yr-content-list-text text\" data-rapid-cpos=\"4\" data-rapid-subsec=\"paragraph\" data-rapid-parsed=\"subsec\">\n<h3><strong>The Save Our Country Coalition<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component yr-content-list-text text\" data-rapid-cpos=\"5\" data-rapid-subsec=\"paragraph\" data-rapid-parsed=\"subsec\">\n<p>Monday\u2019s livestreamed event featuring the America\u2019s Frontline Doctors group was organized by Tea Party Patriots, a wealthy Republican donor-backed nonprofit that, in partnership with FreedomWorks and other right-wing dark money groups, launched the Save Our Country Coalition in April to push for America\u2019s rapid reopening. Jenny Beth Martin, TPP\u2019s co-founder, spoke at the conference alongside the self-proclaimed frontline doctors, urging people to call their elected officials to demand access to hydroxychloroquine.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component yr-content-list-text text\" data-rapid-cpos=\"6\" data-rapid-subsec=\"paragraph\" data-rapid-parsed=\"subsec\">\n<p>Simone Gold, the founder of America\u2019s Frontline Doctors, has been a go-to source for Fox News on the so-called dangers of strict coronavirus measures and has spoken at several reopen rallies.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not clear to what extent the Save Our Country Coalition was behind Monday\u2019s press event; the America\u2019s Frontline Doctors website discloses no affiliation to any other group, nor does it proclaim itself a 501(c) nonprofit.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component yr-content-list-text text\" data-rapid-cpos=\"8\" data-rapid-subsec=\"paragraph\" data-rapid-parsed=\"subsec\">\n<p>But Tea Party Patriots is clearly involved in both efforts, and the Monday press conference was directly in line with SOC\u2019s push to downplay the pandemic.\u00a0FreedomWorks and Tea Party Patriots did not immediately respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component yr-content-list-text text\" data-rapid-cpos=\"9\" data-rapid-subsec=\"paragraph\" data-rapid-parsed=\"subsec\">\n<p>One of the people spearheading SOC\u2019s efforts is GOP operative and Trump economic adviser Stephen Moore, who last year withdrew from consideration for a job with the Federal Reserve and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2019\/06\/26\/stephen-moores-new-cryptocurrency-makes-absolutely-no-sense\/\" data-ylk=\"subsec:paragraph;cpos:9;elm:context_link;itc:0\" data-rapid-parsed=\"slk\" data-rapid_p=\"13\" data-v9y=\"1\">joined a group of entrepreneurs<\/a> seeking to create a cryptocurrency central bank.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component yr-content-list-text text\" data-rapid-cpos=\"10\" data-rapid-subsec=\"paragraph\" data-rapid-parsed=\"subsec\">\n<p>Moore had encouraged lockdown protests earlier this year, stating on a conservative YouTube program in mid-April that he heard from a \u201cbig donor in Wisconsin\u201d who would pay the legal fees for anyone who gets arrested for rallying against stay-at-home orders at the State Capitol.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component yr-content-list-text text\" data-rapid-cpos=\"11\" data-rapid-subsec=\"paragraph\" data-rapid-parsed=\"subsec\">\n<p>SOC\u2019s honorary chairman is conservative economist Arthur Laffer, whom Trump awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to last year. Laffer has also mentored Larry Kudlow, Trump\u2019s top economic adviser, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-usa-plans-analysis\/conservative-groups-advising-white-house-push-fast-reopening-not-testing-idUSKBN22D6BD\" data-ylk=\"subsec:paragraph;cpos:11;elm:context_link;itc:0\" data-rapid-parsed=\"slk\" data-rapid_p=\"14\" data-v9y=\"1\">reported Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component yr-content-list-text text\" data-rapid-cpos=\"12\" data-rapid-subsec=\"paragraph\" data-rapid-parsed=\"subsec\">\n<p>The coalition\u2019s groups have largely been funded by prominent billionaires, including oil and gas mogul Charles Koch \u2015 who has donated to SOC group American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) \u2015 and Richard Uihlein, a major donor to Tea Party Patriots. Uihlein also backed Roy Moore during his Senate run in Alabama even after he was accused of sexually assaulting underage girls.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component yr-content-list-text text\" data-rapid-cpos=\"13\" data-rapid-subsec=\"paragraph\" data-rapid-parsed=\"subsec\">\n<p>Former ALEC staffer Jerry Taylor, a co-founder of the nonpartisan Niskanen Center, condemned SOC\u2019s efforts to undermine leading public health officials last month.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component yr-content-list-text text\" data-rapid-cpos=\"14\" data-rapid-subsec=\"paragraph\" data-rapid-parsed=\"subsec\">\n<p>\u201cThe political actors involved with these groups are united both in their hostility to mainstream science \u2014 which they consider a conspiratorial leftist plot to destroy free market capitalism \u2014 and their superficial understanding of economics,\u201d Taylor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2020\/jun\/01\/save-our-country-coalition-states-reopen\" data-ylk=\"subsec:paragraph;cpos:14;elm:context_link;itc:0\" data-rapid-parsed=\"slk\" data-rapid_p=\"15\" data-v9y=\"0\">told The Guardian<\/a>. \u201cFully reopening the economy will not produce an economic recovery until the coronavirus is contained and can stay contained.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component yr-content-list-text text\" data-rapid-cpos=\"15\" data-rapid-subsec=\"paragraph\" data-rapid-parsed=\"subsec\">\n<h3><strong>A Strange Group Of Doctors<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component yr-content-list-text text\" data-rapid-cpos=\"16\" data-rapid-subsec=\"paragraph\" data-rapid-parsed=\"subsec\">\n<p>Many of the members of America\u2019s Frontline Doctors have promoted fringe views that go against overwhelming medical evidence. The group includes a pro-Trump physician who has appeared on Fox News advocating against lockdowns and an evangelical Christian minister who has promoted bizarre claims about DNA from space aliens being used in medical treatment. Dr. Stella Immmanuel, a minister who operates a tiny walk-in medical clinic out of a strip mall in Texas, falsely claimed there was a \u201ccure\u201d for COVID-19 and suggested that people did not need to wear masks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component yr-content-list-text text\" data-rapid-cpos=\"17\" data-rapid-subsec=\"paragraph\" data-rapid-parsed=\"subsec\">\n<p>Immanuel is the author of several books which contain homophobic and extreme views, as well as writing that the \u201cHarry Potter\u201d series makes society \u201caccept demonic activity and witchcraft as normal\u201d and that \u201cdemonic music has penetrated the souls of our children and programmed them with an anti-Christ message.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component yr-content-list-text text\" data-rapid-cpos=\"18\" data-rapid-subsec=\"paragraph\" data-rapid-parsed=\"subsec\">\n<p>It is unclear how the group came together, but several have become popular in conservative circles for promoting views that align with Trump\u2019s rhetoric on the pandemic.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component yr-content-list-text text\" data-rapid-cpos=\"19\" data-rapid-subsec=\"paragraph\" data-rapid-parsed=\"subsec\">\n<p>Gold includes some vague details about her background in a bio on her website, which states that she \u201cworked in Washington D.C. for the Surgeon General, as well as for the Chairman of the Labor &amp; Human Resources Committee.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component yr-content-list-text text\" data-rapid-cpos=\"20\" data-rapid-subsec=\"paragraph\" data-rapid-parsed=\"subsec\">\n<p>But a spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services, which houses the Office of the Surgeon General, could not confirm that Gold worked in the office.<\/p>\n<p>According to her LinkedIn page, Gold briefly served as a congressional fellow in 1997, in which she participated in \u201cresearch and analysis of health policy issues\u201d and wrote speeches for Sen. Jim Jeffords, the Republican chairman of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee at the time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component yr-content-list-text text\" data-rapid-cpos=\"22\" data-rapid-subsec=\"paragraph\" data-rapid-parsed=\"subsec\">\n<p>Gold did not immediately respond to HuffPost\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component yr-content-list-text text\" data-rapid-cpos=\"23\" data-rapid-subsec=\"paragraph\" data-rapid-parsed=\"subsec\">\n<h3><strong>The Right-Wing Propaganda Machine<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component yr-content-list-text text\" data-rapid-cpos=\"24\" data-rapid-subsec=\"paragraph\" data-rapid-parsed=\"subsec\">\n<p>Far-right website Breitbart News posted the video to Facebook on Monday, triggering its viral spread across other social media sites.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component yr-content-list-text text\" data-rapid-cpos=\"25\" data-rapid-subsec=\"paragraph\" data-rapid-parsed=\"subsec\">\n<p>A cycle of right-wing actors spreading misinformation, then playing the role of free speech martyr, was in full effect on Tuesday morning, as multiple pro-Trump media outlets and activists promoted the video\u2019s claims and condemned its removal. Far-right One America News Network pundits, right-wing website PragerU, prominent conservative radio host Mark Levin, Trump endorsers Diamond and Silk, Media Research Center founder Brent Bozell and other conservative influencers all tweeted about the video. At least 10 Republican congressional candidates and local GOP Facebook pages also shared it, according to an analysis by First Draft, an organization that monitors misinformation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component yr-content-list-text text\" data-rapid-cpos=\"26\" data-rapid-subsec=\"paragraph\" data-rapid-parsed=\"subsec\">\n<p>By early Tuesday, the president and his eldest son also shared now-deleted clips on Twitter, where the video trended.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component yr-content-list-text text\" data-rapid-cpos=\"27\" data-rapid-subsec=\"paragraph\" data-rapid-parsed=\"subsec\">\n<p>The video\u2019s rapid growth reflected the speed at which misinformation can travel when powerful far-right media outlets and politicians amplify it, as well as the glaring inadequacies of Facebook, YouTube and Twitter to stop the spread before it reaches mass audiences.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component yr-content-list-text text\" data-rapid-cpos=\"28\" data-rapid-subsec=\"paragraph\" data-rapid-parsed=\"subsec\">\n<p>Facebook did not respond to HuffPost\u2019s request for comment on what actions it was taking to prevent the further spread of the video or any ramifications for the accounts of those involved in its creation and dissemination, instead providing a boilerplate statement about the removal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component yr-content-list-text text\" data-rapid-cpos=\"29\" data-rapid-subsec=\"paragraph\" data-rapid-parsed=\"subsec\">\n<p>\u201cWe removed the video for sharing false information about cures and treatments for COVID-19,\u201d Andrea Vallone, a spokesperson for Facebook, told HuffPost. But as of Tuesday afternoon, large pages were still freely linking to and embedding clips on the platform.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component yr-content-list-text text\" data-rapid-cpos=\"30\" data-rapid-subsec=\"paragraph\" data-rapid-parsed=\"subsec\">\n<p>Facebook has become a hub for medical misinformation, anti-vaccine conspiracies and extremism during the pandemic. Anti-lockdown groups connected to powerful conservative activists gained hundreds of thousands of followers and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/coronavirus-lockdown-protests-facebook-black-lives-matter-trump_n_5ef647d5c5b6ca97090f57d7?f\" data-ylk=\"subsec:paragraph;cpos:30;elm:context_link;itc:0\" data-rapid-parsed=\"slk\" data-rapid_p=\"21\" data-v9y=\"0\">devolved into conspiracy theories<\/a>, while prosecutors say followers of the anti-government Boogaloo movement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/facebook-boogaloo-extremism-reddit-takedown_n_5efcb6adc5b612083c55d378\" data-ylk=\"subsec:paragraph;cpos:30;elm:context_link;itc:0\" data-rapid-parsed=\"slk\" data-rapid_p=\"22\" data-v9y=\"0\">discussed plans<\/a> on the site before murdering law enforcement officers. In May, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/05\/20\/technology\/plandemic-movie-youtube-facebook-coronavirus.html\" data-ylk=\"subsec:paragraph;cpos:30;elm:context_link;itc:0\" data-rapid-parsed=\"slk\" data-rapid_p=\"23\" data-v9y=\"0\">coronavirus conspiracy video<\/a> called \u201cPlandemic\u201d gained millions of views within days of its posting before mainstream media began debunking its false claims and Facebook removed the video.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component yr-content-list-text text\" data-rapid-cpos=\"31\" data-rapid-subsec=\"paragraph\" data-rapid-parsed=\"subsec\">\n<p>Facebook\u2019s response time to this week\u2019s viral disinformation video was days faster than with \u201cPlandemic,\u201d but still failed to prevent it from being watched at least 17 million times from the Breitbart post alone \u2015 millions more views than \u201cPlandemic\u201d amassed prior to its removal. Links to the video are also still available on the platform, including on the page of one of the most prominent members of the \u201cfrontline doctors\u201d group.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component yr-content-list-text text\" data-rapid-cpos=\"32\" data-rapid-subsec=\"paragraph\" data-rapid-parsed=\"subsec\">\n<h3><strong>Crying Censorship\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component yr-content-list-text text\" data-rapid-cpos=\"33\" data-rapid-subsec=\"paragraph\" data-rapid-parsed=\"subsec\">\n<p>The video capitalized on a \u201cwatch before it\u2019s taken down\u201d framing that lets viewers feel like they are getting in on a secret or are privy to exclusive information that will soon disappear, according to Diara J. Townes, an investigative researcher at First Draft. When platforms eventually take action to remove or flag content with false claims and potentially harmful medical advice, the media outlets and influencers who spread the misinformation then cry censorship and position themselves as victims.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component yr-content-list-text text\" data-rapid-cpos=\"34\" data-rapid-subsec=\"paragraph\" data-rapid-parsed=\"subsec\">\n<p>Donald Trump Jr.\u2019s Twitter account was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.ca\/entry\/donald-trump-jr-twitter-account-partially-suspended_n_5f202d4ec5b638cfec4a3fdf?ri18n=true\" data-ylk=\"subsec:paragraph;cpos:34;elm:context_link;itc:0\" data-rapid-parsed=\"slk\" data-rapid_p=\"24\" data-v9y=\"0\">partially suspended<\/a> after he shared it, leading to a Trump spokesperson condemning \u201cBig Tech\u201d for election interference. (Twitter told HuffPost that it did not take similar enforcement action against the president\u2019s account because, unlike his son, he \u201cdid not Tweet the video in question, he Retweeted it.\u201d)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component yr-content-list-text text\" data-rapid-cpos=\"35\" data-rapid-subsec=\"paragraph\" data-rapid-parsed=\"subsec\">\n<p>Breitbart published a post claiming the video had been censored, while bragging that \u201cin terms of viral velocity\u201d their livestream post had outperformed content from Hillary Clinton and Kim Kardashian.
