Virginia’s Senate Votes In Favor Of Reduced Penalties For Assaulting Police<\/h1>\n

Today in “throwing the baby out with the social justice bathwater”, Virginia’s senate has passed a measure that will give judges and juries more control in reducing charges for assaulting police officers.<\/strong>\u00a0The charges can now be dropped from a felony to a misdemeanor if the officer is not harmed during the altercation, ABC 8\u00a0reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The bill was introduced by Democrat Scott Surovell and eliminates mandatory minimum sentences for assault and battery charges against not just police – but also judges, magistrates correctional officers and firefighters.\u00a0Basically, anyone tasked with making sure that Scott Surovell is kept safe in his community.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

He argued that a felony is “too harsh” of a penalty since it carries a 6 month minimum sentence.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Now, judges will be able to overturn the Felony and make the charges a misdemeanor, though given the bill’s provisions, we’re not sure why they would.<\/p>\n

Senate Democratic Caucus Chair Mamie E. Locke supported the proposed legislation, saying that that it will show people protesting for racial justice that they are being heard.\u00a0Yeah, and encouraged to assault police officers<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow is not the time for never, we\u2019re dealing with now,\u201d Locke commented.\u00a0Sure – whatever that means.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Surovell, making excuses for criminals being apprehended by law enforcement, said that\u00a0the charges often happen as a result of\u00a0an arrest that \u201cbecomes unnecessarily aggressive.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sen. Amanda Chase called\u00a0the bill \u201can attack on our law enforcement.\u201d It will go to the House of Delegates, where Democrats hold a 10 seat majority.<\/p>\n
