New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday all but threatened President Trump\u2019s safety if he returns to New York City in a rant responding to\u00a0an exclusive story by The Post<\/a>\u00a0that Trump is looking to pull federal funds from \u201clawless\u201d cities including New York.<\/p>\n

Cuomo called an emergency press briefing within a half-hour on Wednesday night to tear into Trump for the order, which cites New York\u2019s rising murder rate and defunding of the NYPD.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe better have an army if he thinks he\u2019s gonna walk down the street in New York. New Yorkers don\u2019t want to have anything to do with him,\u201d the Democrat said, all but threatening the commander-in-chief.<\/p>\n

But Cuomo \u2014 who, like Trump, hails from Queens \u2014 wasn\u2019t done. \u201cHe can\u2019t have enough bodyguards to walk through New York City, people don\u2019t want to have anything to do with him.\u201d<\/p>\n

On substance, Cuomo said he doubted the legality of Trump\u2019s five-page memo ordering a review of federal funds that can be redirected from New York City, Portland, Seattle and Washington, DC.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is more of the same from him. It\u2019s political, it is gratuitous. And it\u2019s illegal. But it is another attempt to kill New York City,\u201d Cuomo said.<\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Ford said drop dead. President\u00a0Trump has been actively\u00a0trying to kill New York City since he\u2019s been elected,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

In highly personal and insulting language, Cuomo speculated that Trump wasn\u2019t upset about New York\u2019s soaring murder rate and shootings.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s because he is from New York City and New York City rejected him, always,\u201d Cuomo said. \u201cHe was dismissed as a clown in New York City, those who know him best, like him least.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cuomo jeered: \u201cHe was disrespected in New York City. Nobody took him seriously and he was just a tabloid cartoon.\u201d<\/p>\n

Referring to a claim in a recent book by Trump\u2019s niece, Mary Trump, Cuomo said, \u201chis sister, a former federal judge, is disgraced by him.\u201d<\/p>\n

The governor also claimed Trump\u2019s \u201cnegligence\u201d is the reason New York state suffered the highest COVID-19 death toll. The governor\u2019s critics\u00a0blame his Health Department\u2019s mandate<\/a>\u00a0that forbade nursing homes from turning away COVID-19-positive patients, potentially leading to at least 6,500 deaths.<\/p>\n

At the end of his call, Cuomo, apparently sensing how his remarks about Trump could be seen as threatening, attempted to walk them back.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy comment about the president and bodyguards in New York City, all I\u2019m saying is that he is persona non grata in New York City. And I think he knows that. And he\u2019ll never come back to New York, because New Yorkers will never forget how gratuitously mean he has been to New Yorkers and how many times he\u2019s tried to kill the city that gave him his start and birthed him. That\u2019s what I meant about the bodyguards.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier Wednesday, Trump called on CNN to fire Cuomo\u2019s younger brother, Chris Cuomo, over a leaked tape in which he says he was questioned about sexual misconduct. \u201cFredo must go!\u201d Trump wrote, using an insulting reference from \u201cThe Godfather.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, who was twice mentioned by name in Trump\u2019s order, had his press secretary, Bill Neidhardt, respond.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs much as Donald Trump wants New York City to drop dead, we will never let this stand,\u201d Neidhardt tweeted. \u201cThis has nothing to do with \u2018law and order.\u2019 This is a racist campaign stunt out of the Oval Office to attack millions of people of color.\u201d<\/p>\n

De Blasio himself made no statement.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, City Councilman Rory Lancman, chair of the Committee on the Justice System, said Trump\u2019s order could unintentionally weaken public safety.<\/p>\n

\u201cI guess we know now which candidate for president supports defunding the police,\u201d he quipped.<\/p>\n

Rep. Max Rose,\u00a0a Trump-targeted Democrat<\/a>\u00a0who represents Staten Island and southern Brooklyn, said, \u201cWith this order, President Trump is joining Mayor de Blasio in defunding the police. It was wrong then and it\u2019s wrong now.\u201d<\/p>\n
