Times\u2019 1619 Project \u2018will not be funded\u2019<\/h1>\n

President Trump on Sunday said the Department of Education was investigating whether California public schools will teach a curriculum based on the New York Times\u2019 controversial \u201c1619 Project\u201d \u2014 and threatened to defund them.<\/p>\n

\u201cDepartment of Education is looking at this. If so, they will not be funded!\u201d the president\u00a0wrote on Twitter<\/a>, linking to a post that said California had implemented the program.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0New York Times Magazine<\/a>\u00a0ran the series in 2019 to mark the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first slave ship in America, purporting to \u201creframe the country\u2019s history, understanding 1619 as our true founding, and placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of black Americans at the very center of the story we tell ourselves about who we are.\u201d<\/p>\n

The newspaper was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for its collection of essays, and the Pulitzer Center was named an education partner to develop resources for schools to teach the project.<\/p>\n

But the series has\u00a0come under fire<\/a>\u00a0by some scholars for factual errors.<\/p>\n

GOP Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas called it a \u201crevisionist account of history that denies the noble principles of freedom and equality on which our nation was founded,\u201d and in July introduced legislation that would prevent schools from teaching the 1619 project.<\/p>\n

It \u201cwould prohibit the use of federal funds to teach the 1619 Project by K-12 schools or school districts. Schools that teach the 1619 Project would also be ineligible for federal professional-development grants.\u201d<\/p>\n
