(Photo via\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/commons.m.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Main_Street_Sturgis_South_Dakota_Bike_Week.jpg\" target=\"\u201c_blank\u201d\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wikimedia Commons<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>A new study authored by the Germany-based IZA Institute of Labor Economics says the most recent\u00a0<em>Sturgis Motorcycle Rally<\/em>, held every summer in South Dakota, was a \u201csuperspreading\u201d event. The non-peer reviewed study was quickly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/travel\/news\/study-links-sturgis-rally-to-250000-coronavirus-cases-noem-calls-report-e2-80-98fiction-e2-80-99\/ar-BB18Ps9i\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">debunked<\/a>\u00a0by Governor Kristi Noem and the state\u2019s top health officials.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ftp.iza.org\/dp13670.pdf\">study<\/a>\u00a0wildly claims the Sturgis event is linked to over 250,000 coronavirus cases across the U.S. and is responsible for an estimated $12.2 billion in public health costs.<\/p>\n<p>In a press release on Tuesday, Gov. Noem issued a harsh rebuke of the study and media reporting:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThis report isn\u2019t science; it\u2019s fiction. Under the guise of academic research, this report is nothing short of an attack on those who exercised their personal freedom to attend Sturgis. Predictably, some in the media breathlessly report on this non-peer reviewed model, built on incredibly faulty assumptions that do not reflect the actual facts and data here in South Dakota.\u201c<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt one point, academic modeling also told us that South Dakota would have 10,000 COVID patients in the hospital at our peak. Today, we have less than 70. I look forward to good journalists, credible academics, and honest citizens repudiating this nonsense.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The study\u2019s methodology included tracking \u201canonymized cellphone data\u201d of the nearly half a million attendees\u2019 movements while traveling to, from and around the event.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers then looked at COVID-19 case trends across the country following the popular bike week \u2014 apparently finding case increases of over 10% in counties nationwide that had people traveling to Sturgis according to their cellphone data.<\/p>\n<p>But despite the study\u2019s colorful findings, correlation does not imply causation.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/36s81n24kn0c1i9se62v6acw-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/NOEM-C19-PRESSER-e1586296335969.png\" alt=\"Gov.
