A congressman from California became the butt of everyone\u2019s joke for appearing to fart on live television Monday night.<\/p>\n
Rep. Eric Swalwell was mid-sentence on MSNBC\u2019s \u201cHardball with Chris Matthews\u201d when it sounded like he let \u2018er rip.<\/p>\n
\u201cChris, so far the evidence is uncontradicted that the president used taxpayer dollars to help him cheat \u2014\u201d Swalwell says with a pause, as the noise is clearly heard, \u201c\u2014 an election.\u201d<\/p>\n
But the 39-year-old Democrat, who\u2019s been in Congress since 2013 and sits on the House Judiciary Committee, was quick to deny the apparent tummy troubles.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was not me!!!!!\u201d he\u00a0texted a BuzzFeed News reporter<\/a>. \u201cHa. And I didn\u2019t hear it when I was speaking.\u201d<\/p>\n Twitter users cried foul.<\/p>\n \u201cIt is real you can tell the pause he takes to push it out,\u201d\u00a0one person wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n Another noted<\/a>, \u201cThe slight pause as he realizes he can\u2019t hold it in any longer is pure gold.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cHardball\u201d issued its own cheeky explanation, blaming the fart faux pas on a production snafu.<\/p>\n \u201cSorry to disappoint the conspiracy theorists \u2013 it was the #hardball mug scraping across the desk,\u201d\u00a0the show\u2019s Twitter page posted<\/a>. \u201cGet yours today and let\u2019s get back to the news!\u201d<\/p>\n By Tuesday morning, #fartgate was trending on social media.<\/p>\n Swalwell rolled with the punches, retweeting \u201cHardball\u2019s\u201d response and\u00a0quipping<\/a>\u00a0\u201cTOTAL EXONERATION!\u201d as well as \u201cThis, too, shall pass\u2026\u201d\u00a0in response<\/a>\u00a0to Chrissy Teigen\u2019s post, \u201cno it\u2019s a fart don\u2019t ruin this.\u201d<\/p>\n
