{"id":30269,"date":"2020-10-03T11:59:55","date_gmt":"2020-10-03T15:59:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=30269"},"modified":"2020-10-05T10:33:42","modified_gmt":"2020-10-05T14:33:42","slug":"the-unprovoked-attacks-on-armenia-and-artsakh-by-the-western-powers-and-their-proxies-provides-a-critical-cautionary-tale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=30269","title":{"rendered":"The Unprovoked Attacks on Armenia and Artsakh by the Western Powers and their Proxies Provides a Critical Cautionary Tale"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>SPIKE IN BOYCOTTS <\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><b>OF TURKISH GOODS<br \/>\nAND SERVICES; <\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><b>CONSUMERS CITE<br \/>\nWARMONGERING AS CAUSE<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">By Lucine Kasbarian<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s3\">Six days into the renewed attacks by the Azerbaijan-Turkey-Israeli axis on Armenia and Artsakh, <a href=\"http:\/\/asbarez.com\/197233\/macron-calls-ankaras-actions-reckless-and-dangerous\/\"><span class=\"s4\">many countries<\/span><\/a> have come forward to denounce the warmongers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\">But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2020\/10\/1\/eu-prepares-for-standoff-over-turkish-sanctions\"><span class=\"s4\">none of these condemning nations<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span class=\"s2\">has yet to put any meaningful actions behind its words. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\">Consequently, everyday people who have stakes in the conflict &#8212; or are simply upholding their values &#8212; are imposing their own sanctions upon these rogue states.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Enter the consumer boycott.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\">A term used to describe the withdrawal from commercial or social relations with a country, organization, or public figure as a form of protest or punishment, a boycott can be effective because anyone can participate. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>One need not hail from the corridors of power to make an impact. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-30366 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/0-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"298\" \/>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atour.com\/~aahgn\/news\/20100430a.html\"><span class=\"s4\">Boycott-Turkey.org and Boycott-Turkey.net<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span class=\"s2\">campaign (websites hijacked \u2013 this is a partial mirror site), \u201cprobably one of the most powerful weapons individuals have to effect political change is their consumer purchasing power.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\">For years, Turkey has injected itself, often militarily, into the sovereign affairs of Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Greece, Cyprus, India, and now, Armenia and Artsakh. On October 2, reports emerged that Turkey is using NATO and American facilities to attack Armenia and Artsakh.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Since NATO is unable or unwilling to rein in this rogue nation that many consider to be <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalinterest.org\/blog\/buzz\/turkey-nato-it-no-us-ally-96131\"><span class=\"s6\">the single greatest threat to global security,<\/span><\/a> public boycotts are increasingly gaining favor. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s2\">Against the backdrop of war, public disapproval for Turkish-made goods has intensified in Armenia again. Armenians recognize that Turkey\u2019s involvement in this war will allow it to <a href=\"https:\/\/zartonkmedia.com\/2020\/10\/01\/pm-nikol-pashinyan-claims-turkeys-presence-in-the-conflict-is-to-continue-the-armenian-genocide\/\"><span class=\"s7\">complete the Armenian Genocide.<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s2\">The Republic of Armenia <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Q_Ldb3eP5IE&amp;t=1890s\"><span class=\"s8\">announced<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span class=\"s2\">on October 1 that its supermarkets will no longer carry Turkish products. Merchants and importers are <a href=\"https:\/\/armeniasputnik.am\/armenia\/20200930\/24684431\/Inqnasirutyan-harc-e-arevtrayin-cancery-hrajarvum-en-turqakan-apranq-vachareluc.html\"><span class=\"s8\">choosing other trade partners.<\/span><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\">Since the renewed attacks on Armenia, communities in the Armenian Diaspora have also <a href=\"http:\/\/asbarez.com\/196155\/anca-burbank-commends-local-businesses-for-removing-turkish-products\/\"><span class=\"s4\">seen a resurgence<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span class=\"s2\">in <a href=\"https:\/\/massispost.com\/2020\/10\/armenian-owned-chain-discards-turkish-products\/\"><span class=\"s6\">Turkish products and services boycotts.<\/span><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\">Boycotting Turkey has been relatively <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=S4UsNLiJEeA\"><span class=\"s4\">consistent over the generations<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span class=\"s2\">as Armenians as a rule refuse to support Turkey\u2019s economy which has already enriched itself through confiscated Armenian national wealth and territory after launching the Armenian Genocide with no<b> <\/b>reparations or sanctions in sight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\">These citizen initiatives include boycotting Turkish construction companies; restaurants, nightclubs; grocery stores and packaged goods; Turkish rugs, carpets, and textiles; Turkish music\/ dance performances, and musical recordings; Turkish movies and soap operas; Turkish Airlines and tourism to Turkey, Azerbaijan, and\/or N. Cyprus; as well as discouraging enrollment in Turkish language and studies programs at international academic institutions, many which are deeply enmeshed with the Turkish government and its military industrial complex.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\">Armenian-American activist Shunt Jarchafjian is on a mission to educate his fellow Armenians about the products they might see at their local markets. He pointed out that Tukas tomato paste was owned by the Turkish Armed Forces Pension Fund. He says that if someone bought that product from 1967 to 2014, the purchaser\u00a0contributed to the tax revenue of the Republic of Turkey, and <a href=\"http:\/\/asbarez.com\/197015\/that-tomato-paste-you-bought-paid-for-the-turkish-army\/\"><span class=\"s4\">helped fund the retirement of the soldiers serving in the Turkish Armed Forces.<\/span><\/a> He also adds that the Ulker processed foods company sits atop an Armenian cemetery confiscated by the Turkish government during the Armenian Genocide. He makes a point of explaining how the Turkish military and government have tormented the Armenians year after year, and how consumer consciousness counts. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\">Some activists are also demanding the suspension of support of all cultural exchange programs organized to foster <a href=\"https:\/\/keghart.org\/appraising-turkish-armenian-reconciliation\/\"><span class=\"s4\">so-called \u201creconciliation\u201d<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span class=\"s2\">initiatives between Turkey, Azerbaijan and Armenia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\">According to Bloomberg News, the Turkish lira <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-10-01\/turkey-s-covid-stats-haven-t-been-including-all-cases-for-months\"><span class=\"s4\">\u201cplunged to successive record lows in September,\u201d<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span class=\"s2\">that is, since the Armenia\/Artsakh invasions, with 7.83 lira to the dollar. As many aggrieved groups are simultaneously boycotting Turkey, the country may be feeling the squeeze economically.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\">In July 2020, communities of <b>Greece and Greek Cyprus<\/b> doubled down on their decades-long boycotts of Turkish products and tourism in response to the unresolved Turkish Genocide of Hellenes, Armenians and Assyrians and the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Their new initiatives are in response to Turkey\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pappaspost.com\/ahepa-calls-for-boycott-of-turkish-products-in-response-to-hagia-sophia-mosque-conversion\/\"><span class=\"s4\">highly-contested conversion of the UNESCO-protected Christian Orthodox Cathedral of Hagia Sophia<\/span><\/a> into a mosque and Turkish illegal drilling incursions into the Eastern Mediterranean. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\">Turkey under Erdogan may attempt to justify his many foreign interventions in a bid to realize his dream of restoring the Ottoman Caliphate. However, Turkey\u2019s relationship with the Muslim world is also not as ironclad as Erdogan may wish to have it appear.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Mahmoud Zahran, a researcher specializing in Turkish affairs, said \u201cthe success of <a href=\"https:\/\/thearabweekly.com\/arab-boycott-against-turkey-could-have-serious-economic-political-effects\"><span class=\"s4\">boycott campaigns<\/span><\/a> would reveal how unpopular Erdogan\u2019s regime is in a region where he has tried to paint himself as a leader.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\">At the end of September, <b>Saudi Arabia <\/b>announced a ban on all Turkish goods. The Saudi Kingdom has been at loggerheads with Turkey over the contested murder of exiled Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi and the status of the Qatar peninsula.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>According to the Turkish newspaper\u00a0<i>Dunya<\/i>, the Saudi government has ordered individual businesses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presstv.com\/Detail\/2020\/09\/28\/635173\/saudi-boycott-turkish-products\"><span class=\"s4\">not to trade with Turkish companies or buy any products made in Turkey,<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span class=\"s2\">and has imposed fines on companies that do not comply.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s9\"><a href=\"https:\/\/egyptindependent.com\/egyptian-mp-suggests-imposing-boycott-on-turkish-products\/\">A Turkish boycott campaign<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s3\"> in also in effect in <b>Egypt.<\/b> <\/span><span class=\"s2\">In January of this year, MP Ismail N<\/span><span class=\"s3\">asr El-Din called on the government to impose a boycott of Turkish products, services and tourism \u201cin response to the blatant transgressions by the Turkish government in the region, and its attempts to plunder the wealth of the Middle East, spread chaos, and destabilize the Middle East.\u201d MP Omar Sumaida, head of the Congress Party, said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.albawaba.com\/news\/egyptian-mps-call-government-boycott-turkish-products-1331198\"><span class=\"s8\">\u201cwe launched a campaign to boycott Turkish products,<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span class=\"s2\">and our party has developed plans to educate citizens to boycott Turkish products in all offices affiliated with the party across the country.\u201d As early as 2013, a number of Egyptian TV channels stopped airing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hurriyetdailynews.com\/tv-boycott-in-egypt-all-turkish-dramas-52826\"><span class=\"s8\">Turkish soap operas and dramas<\/span><\/a>, to protest Turkish <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al-monitor.com\/pulse\/originals\/2020\/09\/egypt-unite-arab-position-turkey-intervention-syria.html\"><span class=\"s8\">intervention in the Middle East.<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\">These popular boycotts intensify the existing Arab League boycott. Many Arab countries cannot afford the high cost of retaliating militarily to Turkey\u2019s incursion into northern Syria, and so are opting for <a href=\"https:\/\/thearabweekly.com\/arab-boycott-against-turkey-could-have-serious-economic-political-effects\"><span class=\"s4\">economic sanctions<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span class=\"s2\">as defense.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cAn Arab boycott of Turkish products would significantly hurt Ankara\u2019s economy. Turkish exports to the Arab world total more than $30 billion annually, representing 18.3% of its overall exports, according to the trade data website, Trade Map.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>Iraqi Kurds<\/b> such as <\/span><span class=\"s3\">Jwnaid Murad,<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> owner of Las Market in Erbil, <a href=\"https:\/\/investigativejournal.org\/boycott-is-a-form-of-war-erbil-residents-boycott-turkish-goods\/\"><span class=\"s8\">have a boycott of Turkish products in effect.<\/span><span class=\"s4\">\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u201cOf course, boycotting goods will affect my business. But after watching Turkey commit the war crimes they have in Rojava, I don\u2019t care,\u201d he said. \u201cIf I had to choose between starving to death and eating food produced by Turkey, I would starve.\u201d <\/span><span class=\"s2\"> Iraqi Kurdish boycott organizer <\/span><span class=\"s3\">Hamid Banyee of <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Sulimaniyeh<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> says \u201cWe\u2019re expanding the campaign to include all parts of society, which <a href=\"https:\/\/gagrule.net\/iraqi-kurdish-people-boycott-turkish-goods-after-syria-assault-however-krg-continue-to-full-turkeys-military\/\"><span class=\"s4\">will be a fatal blow to the Turkish economy,\u201d<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\">The Turkish lira has been in sharp decline since 2017, including increasing inflation, Turkish economists say. Sergey Dergachev, senior portfolio manager at Union Investment, believes that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-ae\/news\/other\/turkish-lira-in-freefall-what-triggered-the-sharp-decline\/ar-BB17HiGY\"><span class=\"s4\">geopolitical choices made by Turkey<\/span><\/a> have contributed to the financial freefall. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s3\">As the number of global <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/worldwide-don-t-finance-terrorism-put-embargo-on-turkish-products\"><span class=\"s4\">Armenian boycotts increase<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span class=\"s3\">following the violent flare-up between Azerbaijan and Artsakh in July, Turkish\/ Azeri thugs started to <a href=\"https:\/\/zartonkmedia.com\/2020\/07\/27\/breaking-news-armenian-woman-5-year-old-son-attacked-in-car-in-philadelphia\/\"><span class=\"s4\">attack peaceful Armenians<\/span><\/a> around the world, as well as destroy and deface Armenian<\/span><span class=\"s10\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/sfbayca.com\/2020\/09\/17\/suspected-arson-attack-on-armenian-church-causes-extensive-damage\/\"><span class=\"s1\">churches,<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/asbarez.com\/197040\/police-investigating-three-incidents-in-san-francisco-as-hate-crimes\/\"><span class=\"s1\">schools,<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panorama.am\/en\/news\/2020\/08\/31\/Komitas-statue-vandalized-in-Paris\/2351652\"><span class=\"s1\">monuments<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/armenianweekly.com\/2020\/06\/01\/on-the-vandalism-of-the-colorado-state-capitol-genocide-memorial\/\"><span class=\"s1\">memorials.<\/span><\/a><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The very day Azeri attacks on Artsakh began on Sep 27, the Karageozian family of Armenian-owned Noor Mediterranean Grill in Somerville, Massachusetts began <\/span><span class=\"s2\">receiving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2020\/09\/30\/lifestyle\/somerville-noor-mediterranean-grill-fends-off-anti-armenian-attacks\/\"><span class=\"s8\">death threats,<\/span><\/a> violent social media posts, negative online reviews, and slurs. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s2\">Few know that since 1992, independent Armenia has endured an illegal economic blockade by Turkey and Azerbaijan for standing by the Armenians of Artsakh. In fact, <\/span><span class=\"s3\">Turkey has been running one of the longest and biggest boycott operations of all time which includes <\/span><span class=\"s9\">occupying and confiscating the ancestral Armenian homeland for a thousand years. <\/span><span class=\"s3\">Thus, Armenian-made products rarely leave Armenia for export.\u00a0At the same time, Turkey has been exporting its own cheaper goods to Armenia through the Republic of Georgia, an act which presented the needy of Armenia with reason to abandon their own more expensive products for Turkish ones.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/armenianweekly.com\/2014\/02\/20\/economic-blockades-and-international-law-the-case-of-armenia\/\">Turkey has no diplomatic relations with Armenia<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s2\"> and refuses to establish them until Armenia gives up Artsakh, accepts the boundaries agreed upon in the disastrous 1921\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/groong.usc.edu\/treaties\/kars.html\"><span class=\"s8\">treaty of Kars<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span class=\"s2\">between Kemalist Turkey and Soviet Russia (there is no official agreement over these borders between independent Armenia and the Republic of Turkey), and promises to stop pursuing international recognition for the Armenian-Greek-Assyrian Genocide of 1915.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s2\">Says Armenian-American activist Joe Sifatsouz, \u201cMost Turkish restaurants <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law360.com\/articles\/1181935\/turkish-rebar-imports-were-unfairly-subsidized-commerce\"><span class=\"s8\">outside Turkey<\/span><\/a><\/span><span class=\"s5\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hurriyetdailynews.com\/turkey-reorganizes-subsidies-for-inbound-flights-cruisers-128717\"><span class=\"s11\">are subsidized by the Turkish government,<\/span><\/a> <\/span><span class=\"s2\">which might explain why there are so many of them. When a friend has a yen for kebabs, tell him or her to enjoy the variations made by neighborhood Armenian, Assyrian, Cypriot, Egyptian, Greek, Kurdish, Lebanese, Syrian, Palestinian, Indian, or Iraqi restaurants instead.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s2\">But individual resolve is seen as only one aspect of the issue. U.S. President Trump once said he was ready to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/767054f1f99f40199a80bfea8e16ccdf\"><span class=\"s7\">halt a $100 billion dollar trade deal<\/span><\/a> with Turkey over its hubris in Syria. \u201cIf the superpowers are sincere about curbing the Turkish menace, they should stop hiring Turkish construction firms, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.treasury.gov\/resource-center\/tax-policy\/treaties\/Documents\/FATCA-Agreement%25E2%2580%2593Turkey-7-29-2015.pdf\"><span class=\"s7\">break bilateral tax treaties<\/span><\/a> and remove Turkey companies from U.S. Stock Exchange listings,\u201d added Sifatsouz. \u201cRight now, Turkish businesses abroad must pay their host countries as well as Turkey\u2019s Internal Revenue Administration.
