That line of investigation was confirmed after Sens. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and Ron Johnson, R-Wis., made public a list of Obama officials who purportedly requested to “unmask” the identity of Michael Flynn, who at the time was Trump’s incoming national security adviser.

“Unmasking inherently isn’t wrong, but certainly, the frequency, the motivation and the reasoning behind unmasking can be problematic, and when you’re looking at unmasking as part of a broader investigation — like John Durham’s investigation — looking specifically at who was unmasking whom, can add a lot to our understanding about motivation and big picture events,” Justice Department spokeswoman Kerri Kupec said in May, after Bash was tapped to take on the task.

Unmasking occurs after U.S. citizens’ conversations are incidentally picked up in conversations with foreign officials who are being monitored by the intelligence community. The U.S. citizens’ identities are supposed to be protected if their participation is incidental and no wrongdoing is suspected.

Officials, however, can determine the U.S. citizens’ names through a process that is supposed to safeguard their rights. In the typical process, when officials are requesting the unmasking of an American, they do not necessarily know the identity of the person in advance.

The roster featured top-ranking figures including then-Vice President Joe Biden, then-FBI Director James Comey, then-CIA Director John Brennan, then-Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, and Obama’s then-chief of staff Denis McDonough.

It is unclear, at this point, if Sofer will take on Bash’s responsibilities in investigating the unmasking process.

___
https://www.foxnews.com/politics/us-attorney-reviewing-unmasking-resigns-doj

US attorney tapped by Barr to review process of ‘unmasking’ resigns from DOJ US Attorney for the Western District of Texas John Bash resigned By Brooke Singman | Fox News U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Texas John Bash, who … Continue reading →

[1

post-30637","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
