Heavily protected crews on Saturday dismantled the first Asian giant hornet nest found in the U.S., the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) confirmed in a statement declaring: “Got ’em.”<\/p>\n

The big picture:\u00a0<\/strong>The invasive species commonly referred to as the “murder hornet<\/a>,” typically doesn’t harm humans unless provoked, though it has been\u00a0known to kill people<\/a>\u00a0in Japan. The insect poses a major\u00a0threat to local honeybee<\/a>\u00a0populations. But the WSDA said\u00a0in a statement<\/a>\u00a0that the nest removal “appears to have been successful.”<\/p>\n
