DLA Piper, a multinational law firm, boasts nearly 30 years of\u00a0experience<\/a>\u00a0in China and over 140 lawyers dedicated to its \u201cChina Investment Services\u201d branch.<\/p>\n Harris\u2019s links to the company are found with her husband, Douglas Emhoff, who has\u00a0served<\/a>\u00a0as a Partner in the firm\u2019s Intellectual Property and Technology practice and its Media, Sport, and Entertainment sector since\u00a02017.<\/a><\/p>\n DLA Piper boasts of having \u201clong-established and embedded \u201cChina Desks\u201d in both the U.S. and Europe\u201d to assist their China-focused consulting, prompting questions about how the firm\u2019s potential proximity to the White House could be leveraged by DLA Piper, exploited by the Chinese Communist Party, or represent a financial conflict of interest for the Vice Presidential candidate.<\/p>\n HARRIS, EMHOFF, AND BIDEN IN 2017.<\/p><\/div>\n To facilitate DLA Piper\u2019s China practice \u2013 which has received countless prestigious\u00a0awards<\/a>\u00a0from the China Business Law\u00a0Journal<\/a>\u00a0and China Law and\u00a0Practice<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 the company employs a host of former Chinese Communist Party officials.<\/p>\n Ernest Yang, who\u00a0serves<\/a>\u00a0as the firm\u2019s Head of Litigation & Regulatory department and Co-Head of International Arbitration, was appointed to the Chinese People\u2019s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC)\u00a0 in 2013. The CPPCC serves as the top advisory board for the Chinese Communist Party, and Yang was promoted to the body\u2019s Standing Committee in 2019.<\/p>\n Jessica Zhao, a\u00a0Senior Advisor<\/a>, served as the Deputy Secretary General of the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC), a government-owned body established by the Chinese Communist Party in 1956. It was developed under the auspices of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, \u201ca\u00a0governmental<\/a>\u00a0body for the furtherance of Chinese trade promotion.\u201d<\/p>\n Other high-level employees, such as Gloria Liu, who serves as\u00a0Partner<\/a>, have \u201crepresented lead investors\u201d in deals with Bytedance, the parent company of TikTok, a controversial app is set to be banned by President Trump for its\u00a0compromising<\/a>\u00a0links to the Chinese Communist Party.<\/p>\n The hires serve to bolster DLA Piper\u2019s China operation, which it outlines as necessitating \u201cliaising with the central and local authorities\u201d in China.<\/p>\n It\u2019s not surprising, therefore, that American DLA Piper lawyers have worked on behalf of the Chinese government.\u00a0Consultant\u00a0James Phillips<\/a>, for example, identifies himself as having \u201cadvised\u201d the Chinese Embassy in Canberra, Australia.<\/p>\n DLA Piper has\u00a0engaged<\/a>\u00a0in a bevy of business deals that have left them on the payroll of the Chinese Communist Party.<\/p>\n The company listed itself as an\u00a0adviser<\/a>\u00a0to two\u00a0government-owned<\/a>\u00a0airlines: China Eastern Airlines and China\u00a0Southern<\/a>\u00a0Airlines.<\/p>\n DLA Piper has also advised\u00a0China Merchants Group<\/a>\u00a0(CMG), a state-owned<\/a>\u00a0company \u201cunder the direct supervision\u201d of the Chinese Communist Party\u2019s State Council, on a $2.5 billion tech deal.
