In reprisal, Iran launched a limited strike on US bases in Iraq with ballistic missiles on Tuesday, causing no casualties but demonstrating a capability to hit US assets at will.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article__text text \">\n<p>The weekly Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS\/ISIL) newspaper Al-Naba portrayed Soleimani\u2019s death as an act of god in support of its cause, and Muslims in general, according to BBC Monitoring.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Thread: In the editorial of its weekly paper <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/AlNaba?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#AlNaba<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/ISIS?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#ISIS<\/a> welcomes the death of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Soleimani?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Soleimani<\/a> in a US drone strike, but is careful not to openly credit the US for his demise but portrays it as an act of God to support IS and Muslims more broadly. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/6bNXiMyOcX\">pic.twitter.com\/6bNXiMyOcX<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Mina Al-Lami (@Minalami) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Minalami\/status\/1215558265272197122?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 10, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>An editorial in the jihadi paper was careful not to credit the US or even mention Soleimani by name. It couched the gloating in a historical analogy, referring to\u00a0<em>\u201cRoman-Persian wars\u201d<\/em>\u00a0that enabled early Muslims to overrun both Persia \u2013 today\u2019s Iran \u2013 and parts of the Eastern Roman Empire, also known as Byzantium.<\/p>\n<p>The paper also reported on the US and its allies suspending operations against IS as an opportunity for the group\u2019s resurgence, according to BBC journalist Mina Al-Lami.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"zxx\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/WNpWNG7rav\">https:\/\/t.co\/WNpWNG7rav<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Mina Al-Lami (@Minalami) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Minalami\/status\/1215640123234226176?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 10, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>While IS has not been entirely destroyed, it has not controlled any territory for months. Soleimani\u2019s Quds Force fighters were among those that turned the tide against the IS \u2018caliphate,\u2019 alongside the Syrian Army and the Russian expeditionary force in Syria \u2013 while the US-backed Iraqi army and Kurdish militias advanced from northern Syria and Iraq.<\/p>\n<p>Citing the possibility IS might reappear, the US is refusing to withdraw from Iraq in open disregard for its \u2018partners\u2019 in the government in Baghdad. Iraqi lawmakers passed a nonbinding resolution demanding US withdrawal shortly after Soleimani\u2019s killing, but the US State Department said on Friday that no such thing would be happening.<\/p>\n<p>Both the US and several of its NATO allies have suspended their training of Iraqi security forces for the moment, as they braced for Iranian reprisals. Some allies even pulled their personnel out of Iraq to neighboring Kuwait.
