Mexican President Andr\u00e9s Manuel L\u00f3pez Obrador slammed lockdowns as a form of \u201cdictatorship\u201d during a press conference, telling reporters that such measures betray \u201cauthoritarian instincts.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The populist leftist leader, known as AMLO by his supporters, said that COVID-19 lockdowns were \u201cfashionable among authorities\u2026who want to show they are heavy handed, dictatorship.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of them are letting their authoritarian instincts show,\u201d he added, noting that, \u201cThe fundamental thing is to guarantee liberty.\u201d<\/p>\n

Obrador also insisted that mask-wearing should be voluntary and not mandated by the state.<\/p>\n

As\u00a0National File<\/a>\u00a0highlights, while other Latin American countries have imposed strict lockdowns, AMLO has spoke out against stay-at-home orders, although authorities in different regions have<\/p>\n

\u201cFor example, the third most populous state in Mexico, Jalisco, currently governed by the opposition left-liberal Citizens\u2019 Movement, has introduced a mask mandate in all public areas,\u201d writes Eduardo Rivero.<\/p>\n

\u201cOther states have gone further still, introducing stay-at-home orders and shutting non-essential businesses. Even states governed by conservative politicians, such as Puebla, Nuevo Le\u00f3n and Tamaulipas, have adopted strict lockdown restrictions.\u201d<\/p>\n
