Could wearing two face masks at once during the pandemic provide more protection than just wearing one? According to White House advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci, \u201cit likely does,\u201d he told NBC News\u2019 TODAY<\/a> on Monday.<\/p>\n As Fauci explained, masks are physical coverings that prevent respiratory droplets from spreading to other people and provide a degree of protection to the wearer<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cSo if you have a physical covering with one layer, you put another layer on, it just makes common sense that it likely would be more effective,\u201d Fauci told TODAY. \u201cThat\u2019s the reason why you see people either double masking or doing a version of an N95.\u201d<\/p>\n Although the Centers for Disease Control has not recommended double masking yet, the practice generated buzz when people were seen wearing two masks at president Joe Biden\u2019s inauguration Wednesday. Viewers noted that poet Amanda Gorman<\/a> and Pete Buttigieg<\/a>, who is Biden\u2019s nominee to run the Transportation Department, wore surgical masks underneath cloth masks.<\/p>\n
