I have a baby in here.&#8221;<\/b>"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><strong>In Frigid Texas, Desperate Families Take Risks to Stay Warm<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Parents resort to gas stoves or build fires inside their homes during power outages, with no relief in sight<\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" webkitallowfullscreen=\"true\" mozallowfullscreen=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" marginheight=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" width=\"512\" height=\"288\" src=\"https:\/\/video-api.wsj.com\/api-video\/player\/v3\/iframe.html?guid=3C596C08-72A4-41AA-B7E6-4269155025EA\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>By Elizabeth Findell | Photographs by Julia Robinson for The Wall Street Journal<\/p>\n<p>AUSTIN, Texas\u2014The children played in front of four lighted gas burners in East Austin on Tuesday night as their family tried to warm up during days of subfreezing temperatures, <a class=\"icon none\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/new-winter-storm-threatens-fragile-electrical-grids-in-texas-other-parts-of-u-s-11613588298?mod=hp_lead_pos1&amp;mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">no power, and no relief on the horizon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One-year-old Alex Johnson Jr. toddled, his brother Gabriel Brewster, 3, played with a toy, and their cousin Desiah Fisher, 6, hugged them close, as eight other family members huddled around the light of a single candle. Charlene Brewster, the mother of the boys and a 4-month-old daughter, said she knows how dangerous it is to try to heat an apartment with a gas stove. She had no option but to try it for a little while, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know carbon monoxide poisoning, but what else can we do?\u201d said Ms. Brewster, a city of Austin crossing guard. \u201cIs anyone going to help us? I have a baby in here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was a level of desperation many others in Texas had reached, days into a power grid shutdown during one of the coldest weeks in a generation. Like others across the state, Ms. Brewster\u2019s family lost electricity\u2014and, with it, heat\u2014late Sunday night, before a snowstorm closed most of the city and temperatures plunged to single digits.
