FBI Director Wray Says Capitol Breach Was “Domestic Terrorism”, Refuses To Disclose Sicknick’s Cause Of Death<\/h1>\n

FBI<\/a>\u00a0Director Christopher Wray described the breach of the Capitol on Jan. 6 as \u201cdomestic terrorism<\/a>\u201d during a Senate panel hearing on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s got no place in our democracy and tolerating it would make a mockery of our nation\u2019s rule of law,\u201d Wray told senators.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat siege was criminal behavior plain and simple and it\u2019s behavior that we – the FBI – views as domestic terrorism.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\"\"<\/picture><\/a><\/p>\n

The FBI, however, did not have credible threat reports of a pre-planned attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, he told lawmakers.<\/strong>\u00a0Wray and other law enforcement agencies have faced criticism and questions for why authorities were so unprepared for the breach.<\/p>\n

The acting chief of the Capitol Police said that a Jan. 5 report from the FBI was handed to investigators in the police force and to the agency\u2019s intelligence unit but wasn\u2019t sent up the chain of command.<\/p>\n

In the hearing, Wray continued to say that so far,\u00a0300 people have been arrested by the FBI and other law enforcement agencies.<\/strong><\/p>\n

More people are being charged with crimes related to the Capitol breach nearly every day, he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cJanuary 6th was not an isolated event,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0the FBI chief remarked.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe problem of domestic terrorism has been metastasizing.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Wray cited alleged \u201cmilitia violent extremism\u201d as well as \u201cracially motivated violent extremism,\u201d but he added that FBI does not consider the Proud Boys a domestic terrorist group<\/strong><\/p>\n

Going a step further, Wray asserted that it is \u201ca top concern and remains so for the FBI,\u201d adding that domestic terrorism is comparable to al-Qaeda and the ISIS terrorist groups. Later, he noted that\u00a0domestic terrorism arrests have increased for militia extremists, racially motivated extremists, and anarchist extremists.<\/p>\n

Several people died in relation<\/a>\u00a0to the Jan. 6 protest, including supporters of former President Donald Trump and Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick, who died the next day. Early reports from the New York Times and other outlets claimed Sicknick was killed by a Trump supporter armed with a fire extinguisher before those reports were updated or retracted. Sicknick\u2019s mother told news outlets last month that she believed he may have suffered from a stroke.<\/p>\n

Wray told senators that in the midst of an FBI investigation,\u00a0Sicknick\u2019s cause of death has not yet been determined.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThere is an ongoing investigation into his death. I have to be careful at this stage, because it\u2019s ongoing, not to get out in front of it,\u201d Wray said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cSo does that mean since the investigation is going on, you have not determined the exact cause of the death?\u201d Iowa Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley asked Wray.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat means we can\u2019t yet disclose cause of death at this stage,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0the FBI chief said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cBut you have determined the cause of death?\u201d Grassley asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t say that,\u201d said Wray.\u00a0“We\u2019re not at a point where we could disclose or confirm the cause of death.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
