The U.S. is getting a third vaccine to prevent COVID-19, as the Food and Drug Administration on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2021 cleared a Johnson &amp; Johnson shot that works with just one dose instead of two.(Johnson &amp; Johnson via AP, File) AP<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Archdiocese of New Orleans has advised Catholics against receiving the new Johnson &amp; Johnson coronavirus vaccine, calling the one-dose shot\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nolacatholic.org\/news\/a-statement-regarding-the-janssen-johnson-johnson-covid-19-vaccine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow noopener\">\u201cmorally compromised.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In a statement Friday, the religious organization said the new vaccine should be avoided due to its link to an \u201cabortion-derived cell line\u201d used in the vaccine\u2019s development and production phases.<\/p>\n<p>But the available vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna are \u201cmorally acceptable,\u201d the archdiocese wrote, because only some lab testing utilized stem cells from aborted fetuses, making their connection to abortion \u201cextremely remote.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe maintain that the decision to receive the COVID-19 vaccine remains one of individual conscience in consultation with one\u2019s healthcare provider,\u201d the archdiocese wrote. \u201cIn doing so, we advise that if the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine is available, Catholics should choose to receive either of those vaccines rather than receive the new Johnson &amp; Johnson vaccine because of its extensive use of abortion-derived cell lines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Johnson &amp; Johnson vaccine is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.charlotteobserver.com\/news\/coronavirus\/article249518930.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow noopener\">third COVID-19 vaccine to be authorized for emergency use\u00a0<\/a>in the U.S., joining the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines in the fight against the pandemic.
