Redshaw, J.D.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-54664 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Johnson-and-Johnson-vaccine-infants-feature-800x417-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"417\" srcset=\"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Johnson-and-Johnson-vaccine-infants-feature-800x417-1.jpg 800w, http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Johnson-and-Johnson-vaccine-infants-feature-800x417-1-300x156.jpg 300w, http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Johnson-and-Johnson-vaccine-infants-feature-800x417-1-768x400.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On Friday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/fda-issues-emergency-use-authorization-third-covid-19-vaccine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">granted<\/a> Emergency Use Authorization for Johnson &amp; Johnson\u2019s (J&amp;J) <a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/covid-19-vaccine-news\/\">COVID vaccine<\/a>, paving the way for the one-shot vaccine to be administered beginning this week.<\/p>\n<p>The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/coronavirus\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recommended<\/a> the vaccine for people 18 and older. On Sunday, J&amp;J <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/02\/28\/world\/johnson-and-johnson-vaccine-testing-children.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">revealed plans<\/a> to test its one-shot vaccine on infants, including newborns, pregnant women and the immunocompromised. The expanded clinical trials were laid out in the company\u2019s application for emergency use approval and in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/146219\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">briefing materials<\/a> provided to the FDA and discussed briefly during the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/02\/28\/world\/johnson-and-johnson-vaccine-testing-children.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Times<\/a>, the plan for expanded clinical trials met the approval of Dr. Ofer Levy, director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.childrenshospital.org\/research\/departments-divisions-programs\/departments\/pediatrics\/precision-vaccines-program\">Precision Vaccines Program<\/a> at Harvard\u2019s Boston Children\u2019s Hospital and a member of the FDA\u2019s advisory committee that reviewed the company\u2019s vaccine data.<\/p>\n<p>When Levy saw the outlines of the planned trials, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/02\/28\/world\/johnson-and-johnson-vaccine-testing-children.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>: \u201cThey did not get into a lot of detail about it but did make it clear they will be pursuing pediatric and maternal <a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender_category\/covid\/\">coronavirus<\/a> immunization studies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Janssen Biotech, a J&amp;J subsidiary, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/02\/28\/world\/johnson-and-johnson-vaccine-testing-children.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">confirmed<\/a> the company plans to extend clinical trials to children \u2013\u2013 first to children between the ages of 12 and 18, and immediately after to newborns and adolescents, then to pregnant women and immunocompromised individuals.<\/p>\n<p>Levy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/02\/28\/world\/johnson-and-johnson-vaccine-testing-children.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">noted<\/a> vaccinating children will help the country reach <a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/news\/herd-immunity-a-false-rationale-for-vaccine-mandates\/\">herd immunity<\/a>, echoing comments made by Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/02\/28\/covid-vaccine-for-elementary-school-kids-likely-coming-in-2022.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sunday\u2019s Meet the Press<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVaccinating young people will be necessary to approach herd immunity and significantly slow the spread of COVID-19 in the United States. While they typically have fewer symptoms than adults with COVID-19, children can still spread the disease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/\">Children\u2019s Health Defense<\/a> President and General Counsel Mary Holland disagreed, stating that decades of intensive effort \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/herd-immunity-myth-covid-vaccines-kids-deceptive-dangerous\/\">have not attained herd immunity<\/a> for any childhood disease.\u201d Holland has conducted <a href=\"https:\/\/vaccinesafetycouncilminnesota.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Herd-Immunity.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">extensive research<\/a> on the history of vaccine policies.<\/p>\n<p>Immunologist Tetyana Obukhanych, Ph.D., and others <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tetyanaobukhanych.com\/herd_immunity.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">agree<\/a> that officials use the <a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/herd-immunity-myth-covid-vaccines-kids-deceptive-dangerous\/\">concept of herd immunity<\/a> as a \u201ctrump card to justify any measures, often at odds with personal freedom of choice, aiming to increase vaccination compliance,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/herd-immunity-myth-covid-vaccines-kids-deceptive-dangerous\/\">The Defender reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the world\u2019s vaccine market is pediatric vaccines, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/02\/28\/world\/johnson-and-johnson-vaccine-testing-children.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according<\/a> to the Times, so it\u2019s not surprising that J&amp;J would be looking to capitalize on a relatively untapped market for its coronavirus vaccine.As <a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/herd-immunity-myth-covid-vaccines-kids-deceptive-dangerous\/\">The Defender reported<\/a> in February, Bill Gates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gatesnotes.com\/Health\/What-you-need-to-know-about-the-COVID-19-vaccine\">set the stage<\/a> for a pediatric push last year, declaring his desire to make COVID-19 vaccines \u201cpart of the routine newborn immunization schedule\u201d despite the fact that 99.997% of young people ages 0-19 survive COVID-19 with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/hcp\/planning-scenarios.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most experiencing<\/a> either mild or no symptoms at all.<\/p>\n<p>A study published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s00431-021-03955-x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Journal of Pediatrics<\/a> showed only a rare subset of children \u2014 mostly children with serious underlying medical conditions \u2014 experienced hospitalization or worse from COVID.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/need-extra-precautions\/pregnancy-breastfeeding.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CDC<\/a> states: \u201cCOVID-19 is uncommon in newborns born to mothers who had COVID-19 during pregnancy. Some newborns have tested positive for COVID-19 shortly after birth, but it is unknown when they may have been exposed to the virus. Most infants and newborns who tested positive for COVID-19 had mild or no symptoms and recovered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/coronavirus\/in-depth\/coronavirus-in-babies-and-children\/art-20484405\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mayo Clinic<\/a>, \u201cWhile all children are capable of getting the virus that causes COVID-19, they don\u2019t become sick as often as adults. Most children have mild symptoms or no symptoms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The potential adverse effects of J&amp;J\u2019s experimental vaccine remain relatively unknown. Unlike <a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/pfizer-moderna-vaccines-long-term-chronic-illness\/\">Moderna<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/fda-misled-public-pfizer-vaccine-efficacy\/\">Pfizer\u2019s<\/a> COVID-19 vaccines that rely on new <a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/news\/editorial\/an-mrna-vaccine-against-sars-cov-2-preliminary-report-a-researcher-reacts\/\">mRNA technology,<\/a> J&amp;J <a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/fda-jj-covid-vaccine-safe-emergency-approval-expected\/\">utilized<\/a> a disabled <a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/covid-vaccine-could-heighten-hiv-risk-scientists-warn\/\">adenovirus<\/a> in their vaccine. Existing adenovirus vaccines <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/02\/28\/world\/johnson-and-johnson-vaccine-testing-children.html\">include<\/a> the controversial Ebola vaccine and respiratory syncytial virus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo we really want to enlist our children in the war against an infectious disease when they are at little or no risk of getting COVID,\u201d asked Lyn Redwood, RN, MSN, director and past president of Children\u2019s Health Defense.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter all, these vaccines are medical interventions that the U.S. Supreme Court <a href=\"https:\/\/supreme.justia.com\/cases\/federal\/us\/562\/223\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has recognized<\/a> as being unavoidably unsafe. We have to ask ourselves this difficult question: Is the potential risk to infants or children worth the potential benefit for society?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The FDA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/fda-issues-emergency-use-authorization-third-covid-19-vaccine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found<\/a> J&amp;J\u2019s COVID vaccine to be only 67% effective in preventing moderate to severe symptoms at least 14 days after vaccination, and 66% effective in preventing moderate to severe symptoms at least 28 days after vaccination.<\/p>\n<p>Although Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech COVID vaccines are <a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/peter-doshi-pfizer-moderna-vaccines-need-more-details-raw-data\/\">purportedly<\/a> 95% and 94% <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/02\/24\/covid-vaccine-fda-staff-endorses-jjs-single-shot-for-emergency-use.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">effective<\/a>, these vaccine-makers have less aggressive plans to test their vaccines in younger age groups, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/02\/28\/world\/johnson-and-johnson-vaccine-testing-children.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> the Times.<\/p>\n<p>Two more COVID vaccines from <a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/who-approves-astrazeneca-vaccine-emergency-use\/\">AstraZeneca<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/health\/medical\/novavaxs-covid-19-vaccine-could-be-authorized-as-early-as-may-its-ceo-said-a-trial-suggests-it-is-89percent-effective-though-slightly-less-so-against-contagious-variants\/ar-BB1e950d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Novavax<\/a> are completing phase 3 clinical trials and are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/02\/28\/world\/johnson-and-johnson-vaccine-testing-children.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expected to apply<\/a> for FDA authorization in the spring.<\/p>\n<p>Biden\u2019s administration announced today that J&amp;J has partnered with pharmaceutical giant <a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/new-lawsuit-gardasil-hpv-vaccine-infertility-seizures\/\">Merck <\/a>to produce its COVID-19 vaccine, a senior administration official <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/03\/02\/covid-vaccine-biden-to-announce-merck-will-help-make-johnson-johnsons-shot.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">confirmed<\/a> to CNBC News.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/03\/02\/covid-vaccine-biden-to-announce-merck-will-help-make-johnson-johnsons-shot.html\">announcement<\/a> comes as the administration works to ramp up production of J&amp;J \u2019s vaccine.
