Kissinger, who was secretary of state under the Nixon and Ford administrations, made the remarks during a\u00a0seminar from the\u00a0Richard Nixon Foundation<\/a>\u00a0focused on national security and foreign policy on\u00a0March 3.<\/p>\n Former secretary of state Mike Pompeo, former national security adviser Robert O\u2019Brien, Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.), and former deputy national security adviser Matt Pottinger also participated in the seminar.<\/p>\n Kissinger likened Donald Trump\u2019s diplomatic achievements in the Middle East to\u00a0Nixon\u2019s opening of\u00a0China<\/a>\u00a0in 1972<\/strong>, and warned that the\u00a0Biden administration should continue\u00a0the\u00a0tough\u00a0Trump\u00a0policy on Iran.<\/p>\n He also\u00a0called\u00a0the Trump administration\u2019s\u00a0Abraham Accords<\/a>\u00a0a breakthrough in Arab-Israeli relations.<\/p>\n \u201cI think that one of the great successes of the previous administration was that they had lined up, that they had achieved two things in the Middle East,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Kissinger said.<\/p>\n \u201cOne, to separate the Palestinian problem from all of the other problems so that it did not become a veto over everything else.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n He added:<\/p>\n \u201cSecondly, of lining up the Sunni states in actual or potential combination against the\u00a0Shiite<\/a>\u00a0states, which is Iran, that was developing a capacity to threaten them.\u00a0I think that this was a brilliant concept. We were just at the beginning of it. It was like the beginning of the China opening.
