We can try to use that as leverage to pull it loose,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Peter Berdowski, chief executive of Boskalis, which owns Smit Salvage, which was brought in this week to help with efforts, said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2021-03-27_7-47-34.jpg?itok=egFsk8sP\" data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2021-03-27_7-47-34.jpg?itok=egFsk8sP\" data-link-option=\"0\"><picture><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zh-prod-1cc738ca-7d3b-4a72-b792-20bd8d8fa069.storage.googleapis.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/2021-03-27_7-47-34.jpg?itok=egFsk8sP\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"194\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"7f5756cc-b9d4-40ff-91ee-f17836d5bd37\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><\/picture><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHeavy tugboats, with a combined capacity of 400 tonnes, will arrive this weekend.\u00a0<strong>We hope that a combination of the tugboats, dredging of sand at the bow and a high tide will enable us to get the ship loose at the beginning of next week<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The chairman said around<strong>\u00a0321 ships were waiting to transit the canal<\/strong>\u00a0as of Saturday.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2021-03-27_10-16-23.png?itok=dfGyF35R\" data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2021-03-27_10-16-23.png?itok=dfGyF35R\" data-link-option=\"0\"><picture><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zh-prod-1cc738ca-7d3b-4a72-b792-20bd8d8fa069.storage.googleapis.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/2021-03-27_10-16-23.png?itok=dfGyF35R\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"381\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"c0b6908d-e2e4-40af-9f7f-39ac58432efd\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><\/picture><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Many of the vessels stuck in or around the Suez Canal are carrying billions of dollars of goods, such as crude, crude products, automobiles, electronics, livestock, other consumer goods, and other commodities.<\/p>\n<p>Rabie also said\u00a0<strong>wind speeds were not the main reason for stranding the ship on the side of the canal. He said technical or human error could have contributed to the incident.\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/mishtalk\/economics\/over-300-ships-now-stranded-at-the-suez-canal-problem-looking-more-like-pilot-error\">Mike Shedlock laid out a list of potential factors:<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>No Tugs<\/strong><em>: The Ever Given\u00a0\u00a0didn\u2019t employ tug boats, according to two people with knowledge of the situation, while the two slightly smaller container ships immediately ahead did<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Poor Visibility<\/strong>: The Rasheeda was among the ships approaching the canal from the southern end.\u00a0<em>Mindful of the dangers of the coming sandstorm and laden with liquefied natural gas from Qatar, the captain decided not to enter the canal after discussion with other officials at Royal Dutch Shell Plc, which manages the ship<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Speed<\/strong>: The ship\u2019s last known speed was 13.5 knots at 7:28 a.m., 12 minutes before the grounding, according to Bloomberg data.\u00a0<\/em>That would have surpassed the speed limit of about 7.6 knots (8.7 miles an hour) to 8.6 knots that is listed as the maximum speed vessels are \u201callowed to transit\u201d through the canal, according to the Suez authority\u2019s rules of navigation handbook posted on its website. Captains interviewed for this story said it can pay to increase the speed in the face of a strong wind to maneuver the ship better.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Escorts Not Mandatory<\/strong>: The Cosco Galaxy, a container ship marginally smaller than the Ever Given, was immediately ahead and appears to have travelled at a similar speed, though with a tugboat. The one ahead of the Cosco, the Al Nasriyah, also had an escort.\u00a0<em>The escorts are not mandatory, according to the Suez authority\u2019s rules of navigation, though the authority can require it for ships if they deem it necessary<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cargo Load<\/strong>: A cargo ship with containers stacked high like the Ever Given can be particularly hard to navigate since the ship\u2019s hull and wall of containers can act as a huge sail, said Kinsey, the former captain, who made his last trip through Suez in 2006 . \u201cThere\u2019s a very fine line between having enough speed to maneuver and not having too much speed that the air and hydrodynamics become unstable. Any deviation can get real bad real quick because it\u2019s so tight,\u201d said Kinsey.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And the worst-case scenario might play out if the ongoing dredging to refloat the ship assisted with tugboats and high tide doesn&#8217;t work, that is, as explained by the chairman, the possibility of lightening the vessel&#8217;s load. He hoped the salvage team wouldn&#8217;t have to come to that because, as J<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/markets\/kolanovic-warns-risk-suez-ship-could-break\">PMorgan&#8217;s Marko Kolanovic<\/a>\u00a0told clients Friday,\u00a0<strong>unloading the ship could result in a &#8220;ship breaking.&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>As Kolanovic puts it, &#8220;another interesting development of this week was the blocking of the Suez Canal. While we believe and hope the situation will get resolved shortly, there are some risks of the ship breaking.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Additionally,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-egypt-suezcanal-ship\/salvager-hopes-to-free-ship-blocking-suez-canal-by-start-of-next-week-idUSKBN2BJ096\">Reuters\u00a0<\/a>reports that\u00a0<strong>Boskalis and Smit Salvage have warned that using too much force to tug the ship could damage it.\u00a0<\/strong>Berdowski said a land crane would be brought in at the weekend which could lighten the Ever Given\u2019s load by removing containers, though experts have warned that such a process could be complex and lengthy.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cIf we don\u2019t succeed in getting it loose next week, we will have to remove some 600 containers from the bow to reduce the weight,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat will set us back days at least, because where to leave all those containers will be quite a puzzle.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Rabie did not give any timelines on when the vessel would be refloated. He said\u00a0<strong>the stranded ship would need to be surveyed after it was refloated.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s still no word on the US Navy&#8217;s assessment of the vessel.<\/p>\n<p><u><strong>As a reminder, this is not the first accident for the &#8216;Ever Given&#8217;:<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Wikipedia\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ever_Given\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">notes<\/a>: On 9 February 2019, the ship struck and heavily damaged a 25-meter-long HADAG ferry boat at Blankenese, near the harbour of Hamburg.
