March 31, 2021 (LifeSiteNews<\/a>) \u2013 A Johns Hopkins School of Medicine professor has strongly criticized Dr. Anthony Fauci, President Joe Biden\u2019s chief medical advisor, for denying that the U.S. is approaching herd immunity from the coronavirus.<\/p>\n

In an article published in the\u00a0Wall Street Journal<\/em><\/a>, Dr. Marty Makary called into question Fauci\u2019s claim that \u201c70% to 85% of the population\u201d must be vaccinated against COVID-19 before herd immunity will be reached, positing that Fauci \u201cinexplicably ignores natural immunity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Makary explained that data collected by the California Department of Public Health shows that \u201cwhile only 8.7% of the state\u2019s population has ever tested positive for COVID-19, at least 38.5% of the population has antibodies against the novel coronavirus.\u201d Additionally, the report noted that \u201c45% of people in Los Angeles had COVID-19 antibodies.\u201d Makary pointed to this as evidence of closing in on herd immunity, claiming that these statistics explain why Los Angeles has seen a 95% drop in cases of the virus \u201cand the positivity rate among those tested is now 1.7%.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0Fox News\u2019<\/em>\u00a0Brian Kilmeade, Makary criticized Fauci\u2019s broad influence in forwarding a \u201cvaccination-only path\u201d to herd immunity, saying it is not \u201chealthy for a small group of people to be making all the public health recommendations. It’s good to have multiple voices.\u201d<\/p>\n

Makary highlighted the mechanism by which natural immunity might be achieved: \u201cAfter you get the infection, your body develops antibodies. These are the same antibodies the vaccine is trying to trigger and create. When you have circulating antibodies, that means you have protection from the infection.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cReinfections are very rare. That means, [natural] immunity is real,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

According to Makary, \u201c[Fauci\u2019s] job is to prepare us for a pandemic and tell us how to manage it. He mostly missed the pandemic for the two months prior, never prepared us, was wrong on masks,\u201d Makary added.<\/p>\n

Makary argued that if half the population has\u00a0 natural immunity then there cannot be \u201ca need for 75% to 80% of the population [to] get vaccinated to get to herd immunity.\u201d He added that \u201c[we] are there in nursing homes right now. Cases are down 98%.\u201d<\/p>\n

With the vaccine rollout in California still reaching fewer than 30 percent of the population, and with Fauci\u2019s insistence on counting only those vaccinated to be immune, ignoring natural immunity, Makary noted that false conditions are thus created which provoke \u201ca greater urgency for everyone to get vaccinated,\u201d amounting to a \u201cfalse justification for continued excessive restrictions on freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an earlier\u00a0op-ed<\/a>, Makary suggested that, \u201cbased on laboratory data, mathematical data, published literature and conversations with experts,\u201d he expects that COVID-19 \u201cwill be mostly gone by April, allowing Americans to resume normal life.\u201d<\/p>\n
