<\/picture><\/a><\/p>\nHowever, almost no voice arose to say the world\u2019s poor should be inoculated at the same time and at the same rate as Americans \u2014 with vaccines Americans had invented and produced.<\/strong><\/p>\nThat role has now been filled. In The Washington Post of April 6, Darren Baker, President of the Ford Foundation, writes: \u201cAn equitable vaccine rollout must prioritize the most vulnerable around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cVast disparities are emerging in vaccine access \u2014 both within countries and between them,\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>says Baker,\u00a0\u201cespecially for Afro-descendant and Indigenous communities.<\/strong><\/p>\n\u201cWithin countries, the gaps are stark. In the United States\u2026 White people remained nearly two times more likely to be vaccinated than their neighbors of color at the end of March. In Brazil, Indigenous populations are 10 times more likely to die of covid-19 than the general population\u2026 And in India, many members of poor Muslim and Dalit communities are denied access to the limited vaccine supply that is available\u2026<\/p>\n
\u201cRich nations are hoarding the vaccines.\u00a0<\/strong>Whether it\u2019s the European Union blockading international vaccine exports entirely, or the United States stockpiling 30 million AstraZeneca doses, a wave of vaccine nationalism is depriving the world of much-needed supply.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\nWhat must we Americans do to end the inequity?<\/strong><\/em><\/u><\/p>\nEmbrace a new policy of vaccine globalism and egalitarianism.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe United States could\u2026 vaccinate the world \u2014 mobilizing the resources of the U.S. military and other agencies to manufacture, ship and distribute doses around the world. \u2026 To paraphrase the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., vaccine inequality anywhere is a threat to global health everywhere.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Walker reflects what might be called Ford Foundation values. But are these American values?<\/p>\n
Is it wrong for the U.S. government to put Americans first in the distribution of life-saving vaccines, ahead of people from any other country?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\nIs it wrong for the U.S. to ensure that every American who wants a shot gets one, before taking on the task of vaccinating the rest of the world?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\nIs it wrong for America to put Americans first?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\u201cVaccine nationalism\u201d seems but a synonym for vaccine patriotism.<\/p>\n
If and when we have a surplus sufficiently large to send our vaccines abroad, would it be wrong to prioritize nations that are tried and true friends and allies like Canada and Britain?<\/p>\n
When it comes to moral obligation, especially when it involves a matter so serious as human life, ought not one\u2019s own family and friends, community and country come first?<\/p>\n
Again, vaccine nationalism mandates putting fellow Americans first in receiving vaccines Americans discovered, tested and produced, even if that contradicts Ford Foundation values?<\/p>\n
While all peoples may be equal in their God-given rights to liberty and life, the duty of the U.S. government is to protect and defend first and foremost the rights, and the health and safety of American citizens.<\/strong><\/p>\nKing may have written, \u201cInjustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.\u201d But America is not responsible for \u201cjustice everywhere\u201d \u2014 a utopian concept \u2014 but to establish justice to the degree it can in the USA.<\/p>\n
Nor is inequality always a manifestation of injustice.<\/p>\n
Easter Sunday is just behind us, the day Christians celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ who taught, \u201cGreater love than this hath no man that he lay down his life for his friend.\u201d<\/p>\n
Such individuals are saints, and that is indeed sanctity.<\/p>\n
But natural law teaches that, when it comes to love and loyalty, one puts one\u2019s own family and country first.<\/p>\n
\u201cVaccine inequality,\u201d says Walker, is \u201ca crisis to be solved\u2026 We must move away from vaccine nationalism to vaccine equity.<\/p>\n
\u201cAn equitable vaccine rollout must prioritize and protect the most vulnerable in our societies – from the Dalit community in India, to Indigenous populations in Brazil, to essential farm workers and grocery store clerks throughout the United States.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\nSorry, but\u00a0India<\/strong>\u2019s Dalit community is Narendra\u00a0Modi<\/strong>\u2019s responsibility.<\/p>\nThe indigenous population of\u00a0Brazil\u00a0<\/strong>is Jair\u00a0Bolsonaro<\/strong>\u2019s responsibility.<\/p>\nAnd the \u201cfarm workers and grocery store clerks in the USA\u201d are ours.<\/strong><\/p>\n___
