The developments come after trouble broke out again during a second night of protests outside police headquarters in the Minneapolis suburb, CBS Minnesota reports.<\/p>\n<p>Gannon&#8217;s decision to step down comes after he was drawn into the backlash after his handling of a press briefing this week, where he made the mistake of characterizing a riot as, well, a riot.<\/p>\n<p>As Chief Gannon was suffering the blowback for what would become a career-ending error, Constitutional Lawyer Jonathan Turley shared some thoughts\u00a0<strong>on<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2020\/05\/29\/co-anchor-of-nbc-today-and-msnbc-host-tweets-directive-to-use-protests-rather-than-riots-in-reporting\/\"><strong>\u00a0the long-standing effort<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0of many in the media to avoid referring to \u201crioting\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0in states like Minnesota and Oregon where violent demonstrations against police brutality have often spilled over into wanton violence.<\/p>\n<p>Even with rioting and looting in full view in the last couple nights, the networks continued to refer to protests or at most \u201cprotests turn violent.\u201d It appears that Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon never got the memo.<strong>\u00a0As Turley recalls, the chief was scolded for calling the widespread rioting a \u201criot\u201d by reporters.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2021-04-13_9-37-51.jpg?itok=Ce4TpKar\" data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2021-04-13_9-37-51.jpg?itok=Ce4TpKar\" data-link-option=\"0\"><picture><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/2021-04-13_9-37-51.jpg?itok=Ce4TpKar\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"306\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"824e22d3-61f2-48ce-ac64-1b66eb9b2a36\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><\/picture><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gannon was briefing reporters when he used the dreaded \u201cR word.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0He was asked by a reporter\u00a0\u201cWhat was your decision to issue a dispersal order while they were peacefully protesting in front of the police station?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gannon responded by saying<em><strong>\u00a0\u201cJust so that everybody\u2019s clear, I was front and center at the protest, at the riot.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>That led to one person to object<em><strong>\u00a0\u201cDon\u2019t do that\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>and another exclaiming\u00a0<em><strong>\u201cThere was no riot.\u201d<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0The objections were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/reporters-scold-minnesota-police-chief-daunte-wright-riot-unrest.amp\">reportedly made by the press members<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Gannon was not inclined to yield to the word police:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt was. The\u00a0<strong>officers that were putting themselves in harm\u2019s way were being pelted with frozen cans of pop, they were being pelted with concrete blocks.<\/strong>\u00a0And yes, we had our helmets on and we had other protection and gear but an officer was injured, hit in the head with a brick \u2026 so we had to make decisions. The concern is that there is more effort in framing than reporting these stories by some in the media.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There is no question that the violence in Minnesota began as a protest and many engaged in peaceful demonstrations.\u00a0 However, what occurred over the last two nights was clearly rioting as Chief Gannon stated.\u00a0 The fact that people felt justified in telling the Chief to conform his own language to fit a narrative is astonishing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2021-04-13_9-40-37.jpg?itok=pnvh-Pnp\" data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2021-04-13_9-40-37.jpg?itok=pnvh-Pnp\" data-link-option=\"0\"><picture><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/2021-04-13_9-40-37.jpg?itok=pnvh-Pnp\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"279\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"a5f417a8-d5e8-4d3d-a91b-e0bc2c682613\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><\/picture><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The scolding of Gannon followed another\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/us\/live-news\/brooklyn-center-police-shooting-04-12-21\/h_bdefa9d57d7acb9e79b200f7004b4819\">reporter lashing out<\/a>\u00a0at Brooklyn Center City Manager Curt Boganey, before he was fired, because he thought it would be \u201cinappropriate\u201d\u00a0to release the officer&#8217;s name during the news conference. A reporter immediately challenged him that :<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>\u201cWhat was inappropriate was killing Daunte Wright\u2026 You are working harder to protect a killer cop than a victim of police murder.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Another reporter declared \u201cracial profiling \u2026 happened in this situation. We are standing in solidarity and calling for the firing of this officer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>There are growing calls for advocacy in journalism.<\/strong>\u00a0This includes\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2020\/09\/14\/stanford-journalism-professor-rejects-objectivity-in-journalism\/\">academics rejecting the very concept of objectivity in journalism<\/a>\u00a0in favor of open advocacy.
