{"id":61533,"date":"2021-04-21T17:45:22","date_gmt":"2021-04-21T21:45:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=61533"},"modified":"2021-04-21T21:03:20","modified_gmt":"2021-04-22T01:03:20","slug":"why-is-the-usps-is-the-spy-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=61533","title":{"rendered":"Why is the US Postal Service in the spy business?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>US Postal Service Running &#8216;Covert Operations Program&#8217; To Spy On Americans&#8217; Social Media Posts, Share With Agencies<\/h1>\n<p><!--more-->ZeroHedge.com<\/p>\n<div class=\"NodeContent_body__2clki NodeBody_container__1M6aJ\">\n<p>The US Postal Service (USPS) has been running a secret program to\u00a0<strong>track and collect Americans&#8217; social media posts<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; including those about planned protests, according to a document obtained by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/the-postal-service-is-running-a-running-a-covert-operations-program-that-monitors-americans-social-media-posts-160022919.html?soc_src=social-sh&amp;soc_trk=tw&amp;tsrc=twtr\"><em>Yahoo News<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/situational%20aware.PNG?itok=qcFGmdnF\" data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/situational%20aware.PNG?itok=qcFGmdnF\" data-link-option=\"0\"><picture><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/situational%20aware.PNG?itok=qcFGmdnF\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"255\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"3451dd09-b527-4124-9eea-9e4984a31a90\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><\/picture><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The surveillance program &#8211; operated by the law enforcement arm of the USPS, is known as\u00a0<strong>iCOP<\/strong>\u00a0or &#8220;Internet Covert Operations Program&#8221; &#8211; has not been previously made public according to the report.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Advert_desktop__1J5vD Advert_tablet__3QEBr Advert_mobile__1rlLc Advert_placement__1I4yb Advert_align__N0_fw\"><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><em>The work involves having analysts trawl through social media sites to look for what the document describes as \u201cinflammatory\u201d postings and then sharing that information across government agencies. &#8211;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/the-postal-service-is-running-a-running-a-covert-operations-program-that-monitors-americans-social-media-posts-160022919.html?soc_src=social-sh&amp;soc_trk=tw&amp;tsrc=twtr\"><em>Yahoo News<\/em><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>Analysts with the United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) Internet Covert Operations Program (iCOP) monitored significant activity regarding planned protests occurring internationally and domestically on March 20, 2021<\/strong>,&#8221; reads a government bulletin dated March 16, marked as &#8220;law enforcement sensitive&#8221; and distributed throughout the Department of Homeland Security&#8217;s fusion centers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Locations and times have been identified for these protests, which are being distributed online across multiple social media platforms<strong>,\u00a0<u>to include right-wing leaning Parler and Telegram accounts.<\/u><\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The report cites intelligence that &#8216;a number of groups were expected to gather in cities around the globe on March 20 as part of a World Wide Rally for Freedom and Democracy&#8217;\u00a0<strong>against pandemic lockdown measures.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Parler users have commented about their intent to use the rallies to engage in violence. Image 3 on the right is a screenshot from Parler indicating two users discussing the event as an opportunity to engage in a \u2018fight\u2019 and to \u2018do serious damage,\u2019&#8221; reads the bulletin,&#8221; though it hedges with &#8220;No intelligence is available to suggest the legitimacy of these threats.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The bulletin includes screenshots of\u00a0<strong>posts concerning the protests from Facebook, Parler, Telegram and other social media sites (only one of which &#8211; Parler &#8211; was &#8216;canceled&#8217; by big tech).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;iCOP analysts are currently monitoring these social media channels for any potential threats stemming from the scheduled protests and will disseminate intelligence updates as needed,&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong>reads the bulletin.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"scribd_iframe_embed\" tabindex=\"0\" title=\"Post Office Redacted\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/embeds\/503807748\/content?start_page=1&amp;view_mode=scroll&amp;access_key=key-BBNGBcsMbyReUeXm2I79\" width=\"500\" height=\"600\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" data-aspect-ratio=\"0.7729220222793488\" data-auto-height=\"true\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"View Post Office Redacted on Scribd\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/503807748\/Post-Office-Redacted#from_embed\">Post Office Redacted<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0<a title=\"View Yahoo News's profile on Scribd\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/user\/492645362\/Yahoo-News#from_embed\">Yahoo News<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a mystery&#8221; said University of Chicago law professor Geoffrey Stone &#8211; who was appointed by President Obama to review the National Security Agency&#8217;s bulk data collection program revealed by Edward Snowden. &#8220;<strong>I don\u2019t understand why the government would go to the Postal Service for examining the internet for security issues.<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>There are so many other federal agencies that could do this<\/strong>, I don\u2019t understand why the post office would be doing it. There is no need for the post office to do it \u2014 you\u2019ve got FBI, Homeland Security and so on, so<strong>\u00a0I don\u2019t know why the post office is doing this<\/strong>,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The Postal Service has had a turbulent year, facing financial insolvency and allegations that its head, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, who was appointed by President Donald Trump, was slowing down deliveries just as the pandemic vastly increased the number of mail-in ballots for the 2020 election. Why the post office would now move into social media surveillance, which would appear to have little to do with mail deliveries, is unclear.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c<strong>This seems a little bizarre<\/strong>,\u201d agreed Rachel Levinson-Waldman, deputy director of the Brennan Center for Justice\u2019s liberty and national security program. \u201c<strong>Based on the very minimal information that\u2019s available online, it appears that [iCOP] is meant to root out misuse of the postal system by online actors, which doesn\u2019t seem to encompass what\u2019s going on here.
