Sorry, kids, no bare faces for you.<\/p>\n

Schools should\u00a0continue to require face masks<\/a>\u00a0\u201cat all times, by all people in school facilities\u201d for the rest of the academic year, according to updated CDC guidance issued Saturday.<\/p>\n

But coming after the agency\u00a0proclaimed this week<\/a>\u00a0that adults vaccinated against COVID-19 can safely ditch their face coverings, the unchanged rule threatened to add even more confusion as the nation\u00a0grappling with a hodgepodge of mask messages<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Strict rules requiring mask use and physical distancing should remain in schools nationwide \u201cregardless of the level of community transmission\u201d of coronavirus, the CDC insisted.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s because \u201cstudents will not be fully vaccinated by the end of the 2020-2021 school year,\u201d the document explained. In addition, it said, school systems will need time to make \u201csystems and policy adjustments\u201d relating to their mask rules.<\/p>\n

No coronavirus vaccine has yet been authorized for children under age 12, and the Pfizer two-dose jab\u00a0won approval for 12-to-15-year-olds<\/a>\u00a0just days ago \u2014 not enough time before the school year ends for full immunity to kick in.<\/p>\n

In addition, mask rules should be followed by school administrators, teachers and visitors, even if they are fully vaccinated \u2014 to \u201cencourage modeling of correct and consistent mask use\u201d for students, the agency said.<\/p>\n

The CDC decision was\u00a0in line with Dr. Anthony Fauci\u2019s\u00a0<\/a>Thursday comment that masking for kids should continue.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe children do [need masks] when they\u2019re out there playing with their friends, particularly in an indoor situation, they do,\u201d Fauci told CNN.<\/p>\n

The CDC will update its schools guidance in the coming weeks to help districts prepare for the coming academic year, it said.<\/p>\n
