We know it.\u00a0<em>Everybody knows it:\u00a0<\/em>Tesla&#8217;s &#8220;Autopilot&#8221; and &#8220;Full Self Driving&#8221; names for its supposedly autonomous driving features are misleading. And they likely lead drivers into situations where they think their vehicles have full autonomy when they don&#8217;t, leading to what feels to be a neverending slew of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=fatal+tesla+crash&amp;sxsrf=ALeKk01GbDebH-pycjgZsjGJ6uJLYH3QRQ:1621331865925&amp;source=lnms&amp;tbm=nws&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiP9Ljv-9LwAhXKQc0KHbHHCxsQ_AUoAXoECAEQAw&amp;biw=2400&amp;bih=1211\">fatal accidents<\/a>\u00a0involving Tesla vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>And now, it looks like the California DMV may\u00a0<em>finally\u00a0<\/em>also be catching on.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s because Tesla is now officially &#8220;under review&#8221; and being &#8220;probed&#8221; by\u00a0the California Department of Motor Vehicles &#8220;to determine whether the electric car maker misleads customers by advertising its &#8216;full self-driving capability&#8217; option,&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/story\/2021-05-17\/dmv-tesla-california-fsd-autopilot-safety\">the LA Times reported<\/a>\u00a0late Monday.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Advert_desktop__1J5vD Advert_tablet__3QEBr Advert_mobile__1rlLc Advert_placement__1I4yb Advert_align__N0_fw\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/robo.jpg?itok=Lke3WlIa\" data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/robo.jpg?itok=Lke3WlIa\" data-link-option=\"0\"><picture><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"inline-images image-style-inline-images\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/robo.jpg?itok=Lke3WlIa\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"272\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"3d055a15-44bd-43d6-adbd-8024d4c61ded\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><\/picture><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The discrepancy is nothing short of totally obvious. Despite being named &#8220;Full Self Driving&#8221;, the $10,000 package &#8220;is not capable of fully driving itself, according to widely accepted engineering standards,&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0the report says.<\/p>\n<p>DMV spokesperson Anita Gore said the DMV couldn&#8217;t comment on the review, but did note that\u00a0<strong>penalties for violating DMV regulations could include &#8220;suspension or revocation of DMV autonomous vehicle deployment permits and manufacture and dealer licenses&#8221;.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cA\u00a0vehicle operating on public roads using autonomous technology without first obtaining a permit can be removed from the public roadway by a police officer,&#8221; Gore said. California&#8217;s DMV has said that Autopilot and FSD, as they exist today, qualify as Level 2 driver-assist technologies that require &#8220;full driver attention&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Companies like\u00a0Waymo, Argo AI, Cruise, Zoox and Aurora provide data back to the state for their more advanced automated technologies. They also &#8220;use rigorously trained safety drivers to test automated technologies on public roads&#8221;, the report notes, whereas\u00a0Tesla does not.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/musk%20no.jpg?itok=jKgefRYv\" data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/musk%20no.jpg?itok=jKgefRYv\" data-link-option=\"0\"><picture><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"inline-images image-style-inline-images\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/musk%20no.jpg?itok=jKgefRYv\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"305\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"98f38763-ba1f-4527-8609-072234493f94\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><\/picture><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tesla says in small print\u00a0on its website that\u00a0full self-driving \u201cdoes not make the car autonomous\u201d and that \u201cactive supervision\u201d is required.<\/p>\n<p>This hasn&#8217;t stopped numerous people on social media &#8211; and even Elon Musk\u00a0himself on 60 Minutes &#8211; from implying that hands, or in many cases\u00a0<em>any\u00a0<\/em>kind of human supervision, is not necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Bryant Walker Smith, a leading expert on automated vehicle law at the University of South Carolina concluded:\u00a0<strong>\u201cTesla seems to be asking for legal trouble on many fronts.<\/strong>\u00a0From the FTC and its state counterparts for deceptive marketing.
