{"id":65742,"date":"2021-05-18T17:59:34","date_gmt":"2021-05-18T21:59:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=65742"},"modified":"2021-05-18T17:59:44","modified_gmt":"2021-05-18T21:59:44","slug":"this-massive-west-coast-port-congestion-is-more-great-reset-machination","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=65742","title":{"rendered":"This Massive West Coast Port Congestion Is More &#8220;GREAT RESET&#8221; Machination"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>West Coast Ports Rush To Clear Record Ship Congestion Before &#8220;Peak Season&#8221; Arrives<\/h1>\n<p><!--more-->ZeroHedge.com<\/p>\n<div class=\"NodeContent_body__2clki NodeBody_container__1M6aJ\">\n<p>It&#8217;s hardly a secret that the recent collapse of trans-pacific supply chains has been among the main reasons for soaring prices, and it&#8217;s also hardly a secret that the weakest link in said supply chains are West Coast ports where congestion remains off the charts (as recently discussed in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/markets\/its-about-get-much-worse-supply-chains-implode-price-doesnt-even-matter-anymore\">&#8220;It&#8217;s About To Get Much Worse&#8221;: Supply Chains Implode As &#8220;Price Doesn\u2019t Even Matter Anymore<\/a>&#8221; and &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/markets\/port-la-volumes-are-charts\">Port Of LA Volumes Are &#8220;Off The Charts<\/a>&#8220;.&#8221;) Which is why the first, and most critical step to restoring normalcy in both supply chains &#8211; and prices &#8211; will come from stabilizing and normalizing shipping congestion and backlog&#8230; at some point.<\/p>\n<p>And while nobody knows just when this fateful moment will arrive, today Bloomberg writes that ship congestion outside the busiest U.S. gateway for trade with Asia showed glimmers of easing as port officials race to clear a backlog of arriving cargo before peak season begins in about three months.<\/p>\n<p>There is some good news: while congestion is still clearly present, it&#8217;s getting better &#8211; a total of 19 container ships were anchored waiting for entry into Los Angeles and Long Beach, California, as of Sunday, compared with 21 a week earlier, according to Bloomberg data. The bottleneck has persisted since November, peaking around 40 vessels in early February when the loading area looked like a parking lot.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Advert_desktop__1J5vD Advert_tablet__3QEBr Advert_mobile__1rlLc Advert_placement__1I4yb Advert_align__N0_fw\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/choke%20on%20the%20water.jpg?itok=itB03dM7\" data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/choke%20on%20the%20water.jpg?itok=itB03dM7\" data-link-option=\"0\"><picture><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"inline-images image-style-inline-images\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/choke%20on%20the%20water.jpg?itok=itB03dM7\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"293\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"8f4026d3-5d5b-4bae-a72c-5c2e40a0c6ca\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><\/picture><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But things may get much worse quick as another 18 container carriers are scheduled to arrive over the next three days, with nine of those expected to drop anchor and join the queue.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, benefiting from the modest improvement in backlogs, the average wait for berth space was 6.1 days, compared with 6.6 a week ago, according to the L.A. port. That number had peaked around 8 days in April.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, the Port of Long Beach said last week volume was\u00a0the strongest-ever\u00a0for any April, the 10th consecutive monthly high. It was largely due to imports. Exports haven\u2019t fared as well because shipping companies, charging record-high rates to move goods on transpacific routes, would prefer return containers to Asia empty rather than wait for U.S. exporters\u2019 business.<\/p>\n<p>At the neighboring Port of Los Angeles, we noted that the surge in ocean freight containers has pushed the ratio of imports to exports to a record 4.3 to 1, executive director\u00a0Gene Serokasaid on\u00a0a webcast\u00a0last week.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/port%20of%20LA%20containers_1.jpg?itok=aeLCCpzK\" data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/port%20of%20LA%20containers_1.jpg?itok=aeLCCpzK\" data-link-option=\"0\"><picture><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"inline-images image-style-inline-images\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/port%20of%20LA%20containers_1.jpg?itok=aeLCCpzK\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"234\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"e531b9d2-2afb-4ddc-821e-9f6ad6148cc2\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><\/picture><\/a><\/p>\n<p>L.A. also had its best April ever and is on track to hit a long-time 12-month volume target of 10 million 20-foot equivalent units of containers in its fiscal year ending June 30, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Seroka signaled confidence the port could reach another goal &#8212;\u00a0<strong>having \u201cfew if any\u201d ships needing to wait at anchor by June 1, so the port is ready when volume picks up for retailer restocking season in August.\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cI like our chances right now and I think we\u2019re going to keep chipping away,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>If he is right, it will give the US a much needed reprieve from bottleneck-induced soaring prices.
