Did ISIS Fool Trump There? <\/b><b>Scott Ritter on Why Soleimani Is a Hero to Almost All Iraqis<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><!--more-->Eric Zuesse<\/p>\n<p>On February 6th, the\u00a0<i>New York Times<\/i>\u00a0headlined\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/sLUw0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/archive.is\/sLUw0&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1581246803555000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHoe0KUdo_59XnxG9_aUTcvXgyqPw\">\u201cWas U.S. Wrong About Attack That Nearly Started a War With Iran?<\/a>\u00a0and presented the Iraq Government\u2019s evidence that ISIS had actually done the December 27th rocket-attack which had killed an American contractor (an Iraqi translator for U.S. forces), for which Trump killed Iran\u2019s second-most-powerful leader, General Qasem Soleimani. The\u00a0<i>NYT<\/i>\u00a0reporters were unable to obtain from the Trump Administration any of their alleged secret evidence that Soleimani was behind that attack. Though Iraq\u2019s Government was forthcoming with answers and evidence to the reporters\u2019 questions, America\u2019s Government was not.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Even\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theduran.com\/trump-assassinated-the-leading-general-who-fought-against-isis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/theduran.com\/trump-assassinated-the-leading-general-who-fought-against-isis\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1581246803555000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGFw3VF46h9J4xc0_nKH0hsqQO2LA\">some of America\u2019s mainstream news-media<\/a>\u00a0have previously reported that Soleimani was an extremely effective general in the international war against ISIS. (Even in anti-Muslim India,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/news\/politics-and-nation\/soleimani-face-of-fight-against-isis-taliban\/articleshow\/73093126.cms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/news\/politics-and-nation\/soleimani-face-of-fight-against-isis-taliban\/articleshow\/73093126.cms&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1581246803555000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEDagZ2TYkKTMRL3If0TFwXGtLCDA\">General Suleimani is recognized as having been a global leader in the battles against both ISIS and the Taliban<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 both of which fundamentalist-Sunni groups threaten not only Shiite Iran but Hindu India.) So, on January 3rd, Trump assassinated the world\u2019s most effective general who led the elimination of the Sunni-terrorist group ISIS. And the U.S. Government calls Soleimani a \u2018terrorist\u2019, because America\u2019s billionaires want to grab Iran back like they had it after the CIA coup in Iran in 1953 and before the Iranians overthrew the U.S.-imposed dictator Shah in 1979. However, by killing General Soleimani, Trump may have benefitted not only ISIS but also America\u2019s billionaires \u2014 the same group that had conquered Iran in 1953 by means of that CIA coup.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>On January 12th, Aaron Mat\u00e9 on YouTube interviewed\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/RfeXb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/archive.is\/RfeXb&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1581246803555000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEHX21cGLPR2x12zOcqIBXBYDsKhA\">Scott Ritter, the former Marine and then lead U.N. weapons-inspector in Iraq during 1997-98<\/a>. The topic was Trump\u2019s assassination of Soleimani, and the ways in which that action will affect America\u2019s relations with both Iraq and Iran.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Ritter, who had been a Republican, was always outspoken against Democratic Party U.S. President Bill Clinton\u2019s caving to the Republican Party\u2019s pressure to comply with the CIA\u2019s and MI6\u2019s plan to use the U.N.\u2019s weapons-inspections team in order to acquire information that could subsequently become used in order to kill Saddam Hussein; and Ritter vociferously opposed George W. Bush\u2019s and Tony Blair\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/xFMzV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/archive.is\/xFMzV&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1581246803555000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFalsBHQMwIFwKf_5reRR5VI5ngbw\">lies<\/a>\u00a0that they possessed evidence that any weapons of mass destruction existed in Iraq when the U.N. team departed Iraq in August 1998 (or subsequently).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>On the seventh day of the U.S.-UK invasion of Iraq, Channel 24 TV in Lisbon Portugal headlined 26 March 2003,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/M9dr7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/archive.is\/M9dr7&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1581246803555000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEDzWbB3ahLqSEA9P4E1PCJ8oXTQA\">\u201cUS defeat in Iraq \u2018inevitable\u2019\u201d<\/a>\u00a0and reported their brief interview with Ritter, in which he said, \u201cEvery time we confront Iraqi troops we may win some tactical battles, as we did for ten years in Vietnam, but we will not be able to win this war.\u201d The Lisbon station reported, at that time: \u201cA combination of bad weather and heavy fighting in central Iraq has slowed the advance of coalition troops marching on Baghdad. Ritter resigned in August 1998 after accusing both Washington and the United Nations of not doing enough to support the weapons inspectors.\u201d The U.S.-UK regime wanted to conquer Iraq.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Ritter has consistently been critical both of Clinton-Blair and of Saddam Hussein, but he has blamed\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/kuyK4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/archive.is\/kuyK4&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1581246803555000&amp;usg=AFQjCNG6bfxiPigF93IxshUkDw4Xy2656w\">especially CIA, MI6<\/a>, and the neoconservatives (<a href=\"https:\/\/theduran.com\/who-the-winners-are-from-americas-destruction-of-iraq-and-war-against-iran\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/theduran.com\/who-the-winners-are-from-americas-destruction-of-iraq-and-war-against-iran\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1581246803555000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHTwQFRt1RvQOjVRrbDWXcst9VKQg\">imperialists<\/a>\u00a0both Republican and Democratic, Tory and Labour), for refusing at that time to even consider Hussein\u2019s authentic need for there to be a firm wall separating U.S.-UK intelligence away from the U.N.\u2019s weapons-inspections. Ritter perceived that U.S.-UK were determined for regime-change in Iraq (and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theduran.com\/who-the-winners-are-from-americas-destruction-of-iraq-and-war-against-iran\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/theduran.com\/who-the-winners-are-from-americas-destruction-of-iraq-and-war-against-iran\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1581246803555000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHTwQFRt1RvQOjVRrbDWXcst9VKQg\">takeover by the empire<\/a>) even before Bush came into power in 2001. Though Ritter did not, and never does, speak of any\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/www.apple.com&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1581246803556000&amp;usg=AFQjCNF-yWCTdR8U2HKKi0V1gZ_TpMaxqQ\">\u201cDeep State\u201d<\/a>, he has constantly criticized its actions. Whereas both Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden praise their own long experience in foreign affairs as being consistent neoconservatives, as a qualification for them to be President, Ritter has a solid record\u00a0<i>opposing<\/i>\u00a0such experience as being a qualification \u2014 instead of as being an absolute\u00a0<i>dis<\/i>qualification \u2014 for becoming America\u2019s Commander-in-Chief. Right now, Ritter is just as opposed to Donald Trump as he was opposed to George W. Bush. I know in America we demonize him as a terrorist, but the fact is he wasn\u2019t, and neither was Mr. Muhandis [<i>the other leader Trump killed in that car and called a \u2018terrorist\u2019<\/i>]. [<i>Abu Mahdi al-<\/i>]<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abu_Mahdi_al-Muhandis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abu_Mahdi_al-Muhandis&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1581246803556000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGTM9IJ9n8crdUF-Bvaa0-W2y6dmA\">Muhandis<\/a>\u00a0is a more difficult character from an American perspective because he has a history that dates back to what we call terrorist bombings of American embassies of Kuwait [<i>1983<\/i>]. He was involved in creating\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kata'ib_Hezbollah\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kata'ib_Hezbollah&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1581246803556000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHFXQETC2Z2WYemUsxGwl8qs1Zw1w\">Kata\u2019ib Hezbollah<\/a>\u00a0militia in 2003, and he has been somebody who has been violently oposing the American occupation of Iraq from the very beginning. \u2026 The PMF (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Popular_Mobilization_Forces\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Popular_Mobilization_Forces&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1581246803556000&amp;usg=AFQjCNG-vPWdZjMhM4dcJIhdcWLKH9oM0w\">Popular Militia Forces<\/a>) came into existence when ISIS swept into Iraq from Syria in 2014 [<i>ISIS actually\u00a0<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/History_of_Islamic_State_of_Iraq_and_the_Levant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/History_of_Islamic_State_of_Iraq_and_the_Levant&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1581246803556000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEMIhJfnzvruslXzy6fGhk7KYKNmw\"><i>started in Iraq, as a branch of al-Qaeda, to wage war against Shiites and non-Muslims, in October 2006<\/i><\/a><i>, and\u00a0<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/al-qaeda-iraq-ramps-its-racketeering-89733\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/al-qaeda-iraq-ramps-its-racketeering-89733&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1581246803556000&amp;usg=AFQjCNF0dEp8LXjFZ12z8ByMNS5bv0Q99A\"><i>took hold in Mosul in Iraq\u2019s Kurdish north in 2008<\/i><\/a>], quickly occupying the city of Mosul, and they were driving down on the Iraqi city of Baghdad. The U.S. armed and trained Iraqi army had collapsed, litterally thrown down their weapons and ran away, and there was nothing standing between ISIS and Baghdad until Ayatollah Sistani the head Shia authority in Iraq, issued a fatwa calling upon all Shia men to mobilize in defense of Baghdad. And this is the creation of the Popular Militia Forces, these tens of thousands of Shia youth, who came together and joined existing militias like Hezbollah, like the JAM of [<i>Muqtada<\/i>] al-Sadr, they all coalesced. Hezbollah played an important role in this, but they only had a few thousand men. We\u2019re talking about\u00a0 mobilizing somewhere around 40-50 thousand and this is where Qasem Soleimani showed, he came in from Iran and led the creation of the PMF as a viable fighting force, and then motivated them to confront ISIS in ferocious hand-to-hand combat, in villages and towns outside of Baghdad, driving ISIS back and stabilizing the situation until this allowed the United States to come in and get involved in the ISIS fight, but if it weren\u2019t for Qasem Soleimani, and Muhandis and Hezbollah, Baghdad might have had the black flag of ISIS flying over it, and so the Iraqi people haven\u2019t forgotten who stood up and defended Baghdad from the scourge of ISIS. It wasn\u2019t just Qasem Soleimani \u2014 yes, his name was first and foremost, but Muhandis played a major role and his death is a serious blow to the PMF, Hezbollah, and to all of the Iraqi people. And I don\u2019t think that the United States understands that. There is a tremendous amount of hatred on the streets of Iraq today, toward the United States for killing a national hero.<\/div>\n<div>9:30-10:45: [<i>responding to interviewer\u2019s pointing out that Soleimani used \u201cbrutal tactics\u201d and also killed American troops<\/i>] War is hell. Siege warfare is a reality of warfare, it is a two-way street. And we also have to remember that propaganda cuts both ways. \u2026 You have to look at the facts at play. Is it possible that there was wrongdoing on the part of Qasem Soleimani? Yes. But I will tell you this: If you go to Syria today and talk to the Syrian civilians who were liberated by the forces manned or motivated by Qasem Soleimani, they are deeply grateful. Of course, his enemies [<i>Sunni jihadists<\/i>] \u2026 trained and organized by the United States, they\u2019re not going to be so happy about his success, and they will do their best to slander this man\u2019s name.<\/div>\n<div>\u2014\u2014<\/div>\n<div>\u2014\u2014<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Even the neoconservative-neoliberal\u00a0<i>Foreign Policy<\/i>\u00a0magazine headlined on 6 November 2014\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/P2PvQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/archive.is\/P2PvQ&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1581246803556000&amp;usg=AFQjCNH79pHrdexknPt1xbqWYMpuTBl0fQ\">\u201cBreaking Badr:<\/a>\u00a0Meet Hadi al-Amiri, the unabashedly pro-Iranian leader of Iraq\u2019s most powerful Shiite militia. But many of those \u201cdemonstrators\u201d are simply naive, not jihadists. Like Ritter said: \u201cWar is hell.\u201d And consider what the U.S.-UK regime has been doing to Julian Assange for his having helped the public to know that its publics are not the people that those Governments have been serving and protecting in all of this. The question here, then, is: war for whom, and against whom, and why? Even when the Government is the enemy of its own citizens, handing that Government over to an enemy Government is no way to bring democracy there.
